A lackluster faction. Weakest out of all hellenic factions, but hellenic nonetheless, so that means that they can have a big, advanced economy (tier 3 port really helps), they can have a decent infrastructure (tier 2 roads), they have a very nice temple of Dionysus that gives superb PO bonus and gives law at the end, so controling cities isn't that big of an issue. Besides, it gives lots of great potential ancilliaries, more than any other temple. So at least on campaign map Thrace can feel rather comfortable and with enough cities they can have a massive economy. It's the field of the battle where all problems begin. Falxmen aren't too reliable, archers are very basic and cavalry is abysmal. the only thing that can keep Thrace afloat are phalanx pikemen. Very long spears really make a difference. That's still a very mediocre unit but it's as good as it can get for Thrace. A well balanced army with at least 5 units of PHP, 3/4 ARC, 3 GCV and a general or two can actually prove to be a hard nut to crack, if playing defensively. Still no match for post-Marium legions, but this should be a motivation to expand and conquer fast, since you can get your best unit relatively quickly unlike Romans.

ah the curse of non playable factions. They dont have good endgame units and the only special units are mediocore ones that are only there to make fighting them with playable faction funner. But thrace DOES have the best temple in the game. theres a barbaric faction that dacia shares their temples. 1 of the temples gives a morale bonus to troops trained there (from non to 1 to 2). But thrace shares that too. the thing is thrace can make up to a pantheion giving up to 4 morale bonus

Shame as the Thracians were known for being great cavaliers. I think with the Bastarnae or Falx on the flanks of the Phalanx to protect them seems to fare well.

Three units needed for this game which are: archers, phalanx and cavalry. So the thrace is good!!

@@alexandrade1177 they arent i agree. Thrace is actually my favorite faction to play. but when compared to the other factions that also have phalanxes archers and cav thraces selection is lack luster. I did give thrace gothic cavarly for the barbarian theme in my game tho

It was the strongest Diadochi from the battle of Ipsus in 301 BC until it was destroyed by Seleucids in 281 BC, some years before the game started. Then the land was conquered by Celts and stopped being Hellene. No idea why they are a Greek faction instead of barbarian in RTW

Peasants aren’t even good for public-order garrisons for Greek factions because militia hopkites have the same upkeep and are 30x better in defense of a siege.

On the contrary, for public order peasants are the best choice for any faction. All because of their size and low cost. MH are much better at defending the city, but if the town is in no danger you should only make peasants to uphold PO.

Only one way of using peasants, in late game, produce peasants and sent them to less populated settlements, they dismiss the peasants. Works for thrying to encircle Rome as Julii. i am not sure if it works for any other faction

A few interesting things about Ares. For one thing, Thrace's temple actually gives different bonuses than the Macedonian version and isn't actually compatible. I forgot if Macedonian Ares is compatible with Mars, but I know the Thracian version isn't. Finally, unlike other bonuses from temples, you don't need to retrain units to get the morale bonus.

@@Oakenlix I'm still not sure exactly how it works but I just played building Dionysus temples only instead of Ares and the auto-resolves are a LOT worse for me when defending cities than they would have been than when I used Ares.

and they have the morale bonus temple that give you up to +4 morale bonus. its INSANE. your bastarnae will never break tho

I love that +4 moral, cuz if you play Thrace right it feels like arcade mode lol, I love Thrace and I am the only one I know that likes them, very underrated faction in my opinion.

Morale is the best military bonus you cab have, yes thrace is underrated, your peasant will have normal morale, your militia hoplites will have decent morale your peltast, archers, pikeman, cavalry and mercenaries including hoplites snd horse archers will have good morale, falxmen and some other mercenaries like the sarmatian nobles and cretan archers will have excelent morale Finally the bastarnae will have more than excelent morale

Currently doing a migration campaign as these guys on vh/vh, sailed them all the way to Britain

i always had a liking for em even if theyre probably the weakest non barbarian faction after numidia. interesting starting position, unique but rather weak and smol roster, hellenic... a difficult but enjoyable campaign the lack of usable cavalry and good ranged units is the biggest prob. So same as the greeks in that regard but theyre weaker almost everywhere else. You wont be able to stand up to many other factions head on in the late game

Honestly same. I do not enjoy playing as factions with more options and better later game units as the challenge presents itself. Idk I enjoy both Thrace and Scythia for these reasons. Plus playing as these "minor" factions is more enjoyable if you like a good challenge compared to the more traditionally preferred Roman factions. We all have our own reason to like different factions.

Scythia is pretty op once you stabilize the economy😅 the most challenging campaign is the seleucids till u get rollin. dacia is the weakest overall imo but they have their strengths too

I like them because I like barbarian factions but I hate being limited to minor cities with dirt roads and wooden walls. Thrace gives you a nearly full tech tree with several Barbarian units.

Thrace is one of my favorite factions. The falxman and bastarnea are great units to pair with phalanx.

Just unlocked Thrace and played them for the first time. Lots of fun so far. I am about to win as I just took SQPR. As you expect I went aggressive fast first Sythia got crippled with lots of militia cav with general. Built a lot of ports from those. Sent diplomats everywhere for trade allowed me to next take on Macedon. But did not start earning big $ until I went after Macedon. Fighting them and the Romans at the same time was a lot of fun in Greece. After that build a navy go after Rome before they get strong. What I found was the early infantry is among the best if you hold with pikes and hammer with the others. Once you get units with lots of experience and a strong general you can steamroll the romans, but again do it fast while you still have the advantage. Ares trained infantry are tough to bring down too. I can’t wait to see how they match up with the Germans Egyptians and Carthage later on when they go after my huge cities. Dacia has been an allly all game and served as a nice buffer for the Germans so far too.

an ez fix for thrace si just give them more barbaric units. Itd make the campaing and the faction more like the fun cross between barbaric and hellenic like it was intended to.

Honestly, it seems like your best be would be to try and ally with Scythia and Dacia and then move into Greece as quickly as possible. Your other option might be to attack Scythia to secure a few of the ports around the Black Sea if your capable of doing it with a small army before trying to peace out with Scyhtia.

Something I was wondering, how do you access the type bar to turn fow off. I was looking into it yesterday and couldn't access it?

I like Thrace unlike the Greeks cus I don’t like being stuck just with slow defensive spears I also like strong unwieldy Warriors

Thrace is the weakest Hellenic faction here. The starting point is lackcluster - you have to storm Macedon ASAP or see your economy crumble. The unit roster is a mess. Pikemen are yes, good, but after them Bastarnae are pretty meh compared to Falxmen. Greek Cavalry is arguably the weakest cavalry in the game, and the ranged troops are very basic. I wish they had more Barbarian units to cover their weaknesses (Chosen Archers would be nice - that would make Thrace the only Hellenic faction with advanced archers, and Sarmatian Cavalry would help to reinforce their roster) or even make something similar to Selucids. But, as they are, they're just not very good.

Random Weeb if Falxmen and Bastarnae were a bit better and they had one good cavalry unit they wouldn’t be bad. I wish they got some heavier peltasts (like the Greeks) as well. Is there any way I can mod this in by myself?

Flynn Tom The Julii are interesting. The problem with them is that they usually expand north into Gaul and Britannia. These settlements are economically poor. The Julii find it easy to build a large empire very quickly, because the Barbarian factions are easier to defeat. But technologically they are inferior to the Brutii and Scipii as the settlements they take are vastly inferior

If I was going to be less neutral I'd probably say they're my least favourite of the Roman factions, because they're the least interesting, They conquer easily conquerable land, don't have great technology and I prefer the colour blue. I generally like the Julii because you have the easiest chance to recreate the WRE, your faction colour is red like most Roman depictions, and the only faction doing Rome's duty to civilise barbarians such as you.

Thrace... definitely one of the best factions to play. Nobody fucks with sarissa phalaxes combined with falxmen as support. You do need loads of generals to act as some proper cavalry though because greek cavalry is total crap.

Really weak faction. Same disadvantages as Greek cities but far worse phalanx. Macedon, Seleucid Empire and Pontus have the same phalanx but far better cavalry

jiimbv Tough question because I love all of them. I've always had a liking for Scythia though. They're completely different to any other faction in the game, horse archers are very useful, they have an interesting starting position, people tend to ignore Scythia and the orange colour scheme is a cool bonus. Second would have to go to Armenia, they have a very interesting unit roster and starting position.

Ayy, a man after my own heart! Armenia is my favourite at least for now, I'm loving the horse archer gameplay. I'm still pretty "new" to Total War games. I played Rome Total War with my friends when I was a lot younger but I don't think I ever even finished a campaign back then. So I've been getting back into it and loving it. I should try Scythia since Armenia is so much fun for me. I've watched a bit of your Scythia campaign; I love your content man!

Partly. If you destroy a faction in a campaign (for example Greek cities), then you unlock them. If you complete the imperial campaign then you unlock most factions regardless of whether you destroyed them or not (Seleucids, Greeks, Carthage etc). However, some factions like Macedon and Scythia can only be unlocked by editing the game files, even if you've destoryed them or completed the imperial campaign

Probably Spain at the same level of development, but of course Barbarian tech plateaus at minor cities so the Thracians will eventually be able to out-defend and out-eco them at higher levels.
