Thousands take to the streets in Georgia to protest against ‘Russian-style’ law
Violent clashes have erupted in Georgia's capital Tbilisi as protestors faced off against tear gas and water canons.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The anger of the demonstrators is driven by a new draft law which will label non-government and media groups getting more than 20 per cent of their funds from overseas as "foreign agents".
Dubbed "The Russian law", as it replicates one brought in by President Putin, critics fear it marks a lurch towards Russian-style repression.

Wait a minute, why Im not allowed in US or UK to be funded by foreign countries to lobby their interests but on other hand US and UK telling Georgia that they cant have same policies to protect sovereign state. On top of that US claimining that anyone who will oppose riots in Georgia will be punished by sanctions. You lost me.

Could it be that the georgian people have opinions on this matter, rather than just the US or UK or whomever? I'm slowly getting frustrated with the 'georgian opinions don't matter' flavour in these arguments. It all has to be some kind of russia vs US struggle, or something. And the georgian people don't seem to be allowed to want anything for themselves. Such a struggle is stupid precisely because the georgian peoples' desires would be crushed by it. So let's not have the struggle and accept a peoples' struggle for self-determination.

@@nielskorpel8860do realize how ridiculous you sound 😒. It's a law that will prevent corruption. Do you even know what the was about? US and Europe has the same law but more strict. Plus the president somehow is in the united states supporting the protest. Mind you the law was voted on by both the rulling and opposition party. It doesn't even affect the civilians why are they storming the government building as if the law was to banned public gatherings this reaction is suspicious in itself they are throwing Molotov cocktail at the police it's overreaction suddenly there's demand for the government to quit. Except for the part where YOU CAN LITERALLY LOBBY THE US GOVERMENT AS AN FOREIGN NATION, LEGALLY, citing wikipedian in its article name "Lobbying in the United States": "It is possible for foreign nations to influence the foreign policy of the United States through lobbying or by supporting lobbying organizations directly or indirectly. For example, in 2016, Taiwanese officials hired American senator-turned-lobbyist Bob Dole to set up a controversial phone call between president-elect Donald Trump and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen." And since we are talking about a Russia related subject: "There are reports that the National Rifle Association, a U.S.-based lobbying group advocating for gun rights, has been the target of a decade-long infiltration effort by Russian president Vladimir Putin, with allegations that Putin funneled cash through the NRA to aid the election of Donald Trump."

There is quite a difference between the US version and Russian version in how it’s used. (On paper, it sounds great, right?) In Russia, it’s used to suppress opposition. Why? Because the country is practically an authoritarian regime. In the US, it is genuinely used to minimize foreign influence, if the law is being abused, companies or people can take the government to court and plead their case (where a court can then actually force the gov to back off). That will *never* happen in current Russia OR Georgia. Georgia, unfortunately, is insanely corrupt. As much as their people are heavenly, their government is filled with a bunch of Russian puppets. Hence, oppositions to the current gov are going to get suppressed more than they already are. Here’s another example: Elections! The US and most western countries have free and fair elections (give or take). Well, hey! Russia has elections too! That must mean they’re a democratic country as well right? *well we all know that’s not true* . Russia uses the elections as a means to hide their truly authoritarian regime, and give the appearance that they are winning fairly. Same idea on paper, implemented VERY differently.
This is not going to end well for Putin.

1. I have not done enough research to know if these are 'the same law' beyond the name and what they supposedly do. It could be that each law works differently, and maybe those nuances and details matter. It could be that each law is used differently, and maybe that matters for the freedom of the Georgian people. It could be that each law is trusted differently. Maybe Georgians simply do not trust their current government enact it well; that is, with the freedom of the people in mind. 1,5. It is hard to understand laws, much less laws from across the world, and how they compare. Yet somehow many many people suddenly appeared in these comments, able to tell me that all these foreign agent laws really are the same. As I've argued above: maybe they are, and maybe they are not. But to all other readers here: look up the laws yourself, before you let the abundance of comments like this colour your opinion. And yes, that includes me. Because I still don't know if these laws are really the same. 2. It doesn't matter whether the law is the same or not; The Georgians get to decide their laws. So if they don't want this law, that is in their right, even if other places have this law and like it. What we see here -- a democratic people demanding their government to listen -- is normal and healthy. It's a little clunky, sure, that is why elections and referenda exist, and all those democratic pathways. But it is what a healthy self-determined people looks like. And that is what matters: that the Georgians decide themselves, and not some other powers. 3. Georgia is not Russian,... unless it wants to be. Georgia is not Asian,... unless it wants to be. Georgia is not European,... unless it wants to be. Georgia is Georgian,... of the Georgian people. That is how I, a EU citizen, look at it. And we, the west, EU, US, NATO, whomever, even china... We -- the rest of the world -- do well not to enforce our desires on the Georgian people. You cannot impose your political system on a people that rejects it, as the US recently learned in Afghanistan. And you should not; Peoples aren't geopolitical toys. We do best not to play with them.

We're with you, Georgia! There is only one future for Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, and indeed my home country Britain - and that future is together in Europe All these twisted old men like Putin will fail - keep fighting! The following is by Ana Aptsiauri: Let me explain what is happening in Georgia now: 1. A group of 'former' members of Georgian Dream (the ruling party) initiated a law on 'foreign influence agents'. The law copied russian repressive legislation that banned NGOs and independent media from operating in the country 2. The draft law aims to control NGOs/media+marginalize them. The word 'Agent' is the same as a 'spy' in Georgian. 3. Georgian Dream supported the draft law the day it was registered. Yesterday proposed law was adopted by its first hearing. 4. GD claims that the proposed law aims to ensure financial transparency. In reality, NGOs publish their financial information on their webpages(+donor, the purpose of the grant)and go through the audit several times a year. At the end of the year,NGOs publish detailed reports 5. Ironically enough, an absolute majority of NGOs/media and the Georgian state receive donations from the same organizations(for instance, USAID, EU, UNDP,countries/affiliated organizations). But GD thinks that NGOs are using this money to 'polarize society' 6.on the other hand, GD never questioned the incomes of openly pro-russian groups. For instance, Alt-info, a radical group behind July 5 massacre, opened dozens of offices and TV and visited Moscow several times after russias invasion of Ukraine(you can guess with what money) 7. Majority of Georgian NGOs provide different services (legal aid, psycho-social and medical services)and run shelters for the victims of violence. +As all state institutions are politicized, many highly qualified professionals prefer to work at NGOs. 8.Georgia is about to receive EU candidate status. makes it clear that if the Parliament adopts the law, we will not get the candidate status. Additionally, the biggest strategic ally made it clear that the law would jeopardize relations between the two countries 9. Georgian Dream made its decision. It's clear that they're sabotaging EU membership. This decision directly violates article 78 of the Constitution. Plus isolates Georgia from the. And without a European perspective, won't have any future but turning into russia's backyard. That's what current protests are all about and let's not forget that Georgian Dream is preparing for the 2024 parliamentary elections and doing its best to silence critical voices

Maybe you are not aware still that UK left EU or you think others dont know about it. Hypocrisy at its best to tell Georgians, Ukrainians, Moldavians about their place with UK in Europe together...
NGO funding from abroad = independent voice. That's rich. Guess who funded the protest?
Washington DC has a Protests toggle switch. If somewhere they pass a law that the US does not like, then it is included. On a signal, foreign agents begin to work hard and people protest.

Do you actually believe that? Because then you're an even dumber orc than I thought was possible. Everyone with a brain, can see that the Georgian people are pro European, not that strange after what your country has done to them in '92 and '08. So obviously they will revolt against a law that might endanger that path. Is it so hard for you to imagine that the rest of us (Ukrainians, Georgians, Baltics, former Warsaw pact countries) don't want to be part of your "Русский мир" and want you to f*ck off and leave us alone? You know the explicit reason all of these countries joined or want to join NATO?
How is this transparency law bad ? Everybody has an agenda and a view and it would be for the good of all if we can see it clearly. Who supports who ? How ? And why ?

Its bad because you already have enough transparency from taxes, and this law just basically makes investors leave since nobody wants to be under risk of being a foreigner agent or share too much information with the government. Also this law isnt bad right away, the problem is what potential the law has. In russia they used this law to pass a different anti-democratic laws by calling out non-government organizations (which mostly do research about democracy, how country is doing and so on), for being funded by west, and what funds were they? It was just because they also worked in europe, so then after u get rid of non-governmental organizations, you basically have freedom to do any autocratic thing you want.

And difference between usa and russia in this case is that usa implemented it to get rid of great depression (because of prohibition stuff which im lazy to talk abt rn), and also to keep away nazi propaganda spreading in usa. And the thing which keeps balance in usa of the law is that its only about organizations and media, not the person itself, so the usa government always has large opposition either by democrats or by republicans so it keeps the balance of abusing this law

@@brick647 this law has nothing to do with the economy but with NGOs and political activists Well here is the problem of these NGOs who are funded by western governments and of this ,,muh democracy is perfect" agenda. Russia is an old european nation however its always been different in its own way from the rest. Its difference comes from the 3 main piller on which it was build on and on which it has survived through many trials and turbulent times. Those pillars are Autocracy, Nationality and Orthodoxy in that order. Removing those pillars will only lead to a miserable life of every russian, such an experiment was made in the 90s and the results were atrocious for the nation.

(Georgia is implementing it in the Russian way)

Why finance groups from outside ? A stable democracy needs no financial ressources that come from another country. On the contrary. In all countries that kind of "assistance" would raise eyebrows. What if Saudi Arabia or China would assist democracy that way in Europe ?
