Thousands gathered outside parliament in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi to protest against a controversial “foreign agents” bill that has sparked a political crisis in the country. Two U.S. citizens were among those detained during overnight demonstrations aimed at blocking lawmakers from entering the building.

It's a foreign agent's law, the same as in Russia and Kyrgyzstan. Essentially, if an organization receives a certain amount of foreign funding, in this case, like 20-30%, they have to register as a foreign agent. This strips them of rights enjoyed by "domestic organizations". It's a law that very easily can be used to silence oppositional voices, as the government can further restrict domestic funding. It's a spiral effect to cut down on oppositional voices in a country.

It will be used to shut down non-state media and put pressure on opponents of the regime. With the help of this law, almost all remaining independent media were closed and hundreds of journalists were forced to flee. You can be added to the list of foreign agents for a donation of $10 during the stream or for a transfer to donationalerts, boosty... After being included in the list, all advertisers will refuse you, because they can also be fined and closed for cooperation with a foreign agent. And of course, if you are a state propagandist and receive donations from abroad, then this law does not apply to you, it only applies to opponents of the regime.

There is such a huge difference between a country like the US and Canada and a country like Georgia. Not only does the country of Georgia have scary neighbors like Russia, but it is actually less than half the size of the US state Georgia, with about as many people as the state of Utah. Just look at their history with the Soviet Union, they have every right to be scared. The US and Canada are very geographically protected, have nice neighbors, a large amount of land and population, and a whole lot of world and military power.

How can someone who swears allegiance to a foreign government be allowed to serve in Congress?

The 'Foreign Agents' bill would require organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from organizations or countries abroad to register as "agents of foreign influence" or face fines by the country of Georgia's parliament. This is causing such an uproar because, similarly, policies in neighboring Russia mimic this one. The people of Georgia feel that this will be used to deter independent organizations from gaining funds from other countries, and this can affect Georgia's entering the European Union and drifting further into Kremlin influence.

The new law will require organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as “agents of foreign influence” or face crippling fines."
