Thousands Protest As Georgian "Foreign Agents" Bill Reappears In Parliament

Thousands of Georgians protested in Tbilisi on April 15 after lawmakers reintroduced a bill requiring foreign-funded organizations to register with the government. The ruling party previously backed the controversial "foreign agents" bill in 2023, then withdrew it.

There's literally nothing wrong with this version of a law - if more than 20% of your funding comes from UK, you just need to state the fact. Literally the same thing US has for about a century but even less severe. Russian version literally cripples foreign media, this and US one does nothing other than saying where this or that opinion comes from. Like, come on, what exactly is the problem in knowing where your information does come from? Like surely, knowing if that one German outlet 80% funded by the Kremlin wouldn't hurt to know?

When will the US do the same? There’s absolutely nothing controversial about NGOs being required to report their activities to the local government. A lot of NGOs are just intelligent cutout operations……like the NED, which has been a known CIA cutout for decades. NGOs have been used for all sorts of nefarious activities, so a law requiring them to report their activities makes all the sense in the world actually.

How is that “controversial?” NGOs should definitely report their activities, especially if they’re being funded by foreign entities. Here’s just one example…. The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a well known CIA cutout organization. NGOs have been used in foreign spying operations for decades. Of course they should be required to report their activities to the local government.

Under the new version of the legislation, NGOs, media, and journalists would have to register as an “organisation pursuing the interests of a foreign power” instead of an “agent of foreign influence”. So if a Georgian organisation receives more than 20 percent of their funding from say, Russia, they need to register. In the light of transparancy I wouldn't say it's a bad thing, or am I missing something here? And don't confuse 'freedom' and 'democracy' with 'do all the fuck you want without anyone knowing'.
