Join me for the second episode of Solo Sidequest as I do a review and extended playthrough of "Thousand Empty Light," an amazing solo roleplaying module for Mothership RPG, created by Alfred Valley.
I start the video with a review of this extremely creative solo game, and explore how this game explores loneliness in a way that few other games do, and how this is a core piece of what SoloRPGs do for us as humans. I then provide a brief overview of the Thousand Empty Light system works, as well as a very brief overview of Mothership as well.
Finally I do an extended playthrough of the game, going further than other playthroughs out there right now. In just a short time, an amazing story has already started to unfold.
Please take a look at the links below, and consider playing this for yourself. It is well worth the money - both the game itself and the amazing soundtrack by Gus Before Christ!!

What an excellent overview of the module. Very thorough and also very considered, with the discussion about loneliness. Hearing someone voice the Memocomm recordings gave me goosebumps honestly. You're a great voice actor. Thank you for taking the time to go through Thousand Empty Light and its soundtrack. The Additional Objective page with the cipher: for the Kickstarter, there were 100 deluxe copies that each had a sticker stuck to this page with a unique code on it (i.e. 100 different codes). When deciphered, they provided a bonus objective for that player. But, as you hinted at, there is also stuff in the zine that can be deciphered using the cipher on this page. "Hauling ass" is a good translation for "pegged it" btw!

I've been falling asleep to youtube vids of people playing solo RPGs for a long time, so it was nice to hear you talk about it. I thought I was the only one, lol. Many solo play videos, as you said, have a calming voice component. I usually fall asleep during a vid and end up watching it again (or just listening) from the point that I drifted off. I've watched people play Ironsworn, Ironsworn Starforged, Notequest, The Broken Cask and many more. The ones I've listed I have purchased and also played. I'm enjoying your channel. Keep going!

This is such wonderful feedback and you have motivated me to try the sleepy time solo RPG thing! Now…which is to do first…Broken Cask does seem promising, and I think they just released a new one? Thank you!!

Another great playthrough! Definitely like the idea of making the videos to put on as you go to sleep, I’ve been interested in the rpg “Fox curios floating bookshop”. I haven’t seen any videos on it so would be cool to see you do one if you’re interested!

Thank you Ethan!! Wow I just checked out Fox Curios, it looks BEAUTIFUL. I think it’s going to be my paycheck gift to myself next month, and I think that would be absolutely PERFECT for the sleepy time ASMRcast. Thank you for this awesome idea!

Very glad I voted for this one! I have the video paused at the [SPOILERS] point (48m) and am torn about whether to continue because I really want to play this and come to it fresh. Interesting discussion of loneliness too, particularly germane on a channel dedicated to solo imaginative play.

I do not envy your position...you stand at the rubicon between spoiled and unspoiled. On one hand, you could just dip a toe and see how it feels? On the other hand, once you cross this threshold, it is possible there is no going back. It appears you are stuck in a labyrinth of your own making. May the Thousand Empty Lights guide you!!!

I played it last night and had a spooky blast. I will say playing and understanding the game loop didnt come quite as natural to me. Might be cause I also played Mothership for the first time. Feel a bit like a dummy now 😂 But its nice to see the full potential realized. Gets me excited to try again soon!

I’m so glad you had fun, do NOT feel like a dum dum!! I do think playing Mothership helped to fill in a few gaps for me but I was also just winging it my own way the best I could, which is basically my approach to all SoloRPGs. If you got that *eerie* feeling then that is definitely worth the price of admission. Also I think it’s cool that this community can share our different approaches with each other and heighten each others’ gameplay…everyone brings a different approach to every game (:

You may find it easier when rolling a d50 to just subtract 50 from the roll if it is above 50 instead of doing /2 which is a pain in the ass

I don't think "insufflocation" is a word. I Googled it because I had never heard of it before, and I think you may have been conflating it with "insufflation" which is, like, blowing into something to inflate it. Also a word I was unaware of so it has been a productive day.

yeah it is insufflation and in terms of pharmacology it means snorting something up through the nose. It can also mean infusing gas into certain parts of the body to better visualize them during imaging studies. I just said it wrong/added an extra syllable
