thoughts on YouTube + trying to figure out life + taking a break

Hello there!
I'm going to be taking a wee break from KZread. I want to figure out what direction I want to move towards and I want to do it 100%. When I have it figured out I'll be back!
Let me know alllll your feedback in the comments! I wish this was live so I could actually chat with everyone that still watches and cares.
And as always - the nicer your comment, the longer it takes me to reply 😂
Thanks for watching!

Don't measure your success by view-counts or the number of subscribers you have, measure it by the way it makes you feel. Make the videos for yourself, not for others because ultimately you have to be true to your own beliefs, aspirations and feelings. I started watching you and your family when you came to New Zealand but I really look forward to your videos because your enthusiasm is infectious and sometimes, when the sky is filled with clouds you and your family provide a much-needed ray of sunshine. The thing most people forget about KZread and following creators on the platform is that it's not mandatory to watch every video someone makes just because you're subscribed to them. You make the videos that make *you* happy and I'll watch the ones that interest me and others will watch the ones that interest them. Don't be afraid to take a break as and when you feel necessary -- remember that you owe yourself and your loved ones far more than you owe your viewers. I think the most successful channels (albeit perhaps not the most profitable ones) are based around people sharing the things they are passionate about. If you enjoy what you're doing, chances are that others will enjoy watching. Thanks for the many hours of sunshine you've created and I look forward to many more -- but only if it makes you happy to continue with what you're doing.

This is the perfect message! I feel like I don’t deserve these kind messages 🙈 Not gonna lie I posted this last video and haven’t really looked at KZread since. It’s been an amazing break! And I’ve come out on the other side with that exact idea - I will make videos I enjoy making! Otherwise there’s no point.

Hello from New Zealand Becca. Im one who loved your NZ content but still pop in to see how you are doing from time to time. I hear what you are saying and propbably am one of those who have dropped off because Im not so interested in other country content. Im also in my 70s and have done my travelling so am not in your anticipated followers audience. You captured me with your authenticity, your relaxed and loving parenting style (im a nana of two wee boys), your healthy recipies and thrifting. It all works for me but at the same time I hear how it has changed with your shift across the globe. I think it will all work itself out, as crises mode is so often the forbearer of change in life and we can switch direction, however that looks. I really enjoy Elise Buch who is a thrifter, has a wee studio store, loves gardening, bught a house and does content on doing it up, occasionally relationship issues, etc so quite varied too but she has managed to build a decent following, so it can be done. ...... Best wishes to you as you sit in your wee cocoon before the beautiful butterfly emerges again. Change is in the air and one can be really excited about finding passion and joy from a new angle, whatever that may be. Good luck Becca, you are a darling and can go well once you set your vision straight.

I'm a Maori whose lived in 🇺🇸 and travelled a bit. I like watching vloggers who talk about their travels. and about living here too,. At present my minds been on 🇮🇱 🇯🇴 bcuz I've lived in these places. Ut gives me vlogs from both camps and I like that since the media here is lopsided. That's why I like watching you, a stranger in a foreign land. I get a newcomers view of 🍁. Do you make saukraut? If you do, How and why. Is there a certain criteria you follow when thrifting. What are you doing that's thrifty for Christmas.

Becca I am another watcher from New Zealand. I love all your travels, whether it is Canada or other places. I have always wanted to see Canada which is why I have found your videos very interesting, plus seeing what is available to mums with kids, such as seeing beautiful rivers, waterfalls and walks through the amazingly scenic forests. All of your videos are really inspiring me to get out and explore all the outdoors and to travel, so thankyou for being inspirational!

I like watching videos How to Renovate a Chateau in France and it doesn’t mean I am Francophile - just love these people who renovate and their humor and their local trips I love Beth cooking videos and those she did from France I loved your New Zealand videos because I liked to see your everyday life there I would love to see your life in Vancouver - coffee shops there, places - like you did in NZ I don’t like thrifting, and my kids are adults, and I don’t like wokism and New Age stuff but I do love healthy living and cooking and travels. I like children and families and watching happy everyday life But you have to find your niche yourself- what makes YOU happy - and that will shine through Sleep on it 😊

Kia ora Becca, I am a NZ Māori and enjoy watching your content being an American in NZ. I still enjoy watching because your personality is fun and amusing especially they way you deal with day to day annoyances although they are frustrating situations like the horrendous air flight saga from NZ to America... You were real about your feelings of the ordeal and expressed your motherly, wifey, irritations through it and made me relate with you on the same level along with a whole lot of empathy. I continue to watch because I think you are funny and amusing with the way you deal with your everyday demands. Even this blog is so real and authentic and funny at the same time because of the cross roads you are in, I'm looking forward to watching what you do next. The other reason why I continue to watch is my family have never had a white Christmas so we have planned a trip to Whistler Canada next Christmas so I enjoy your Canada outings and explorations. Keep on being the authentic and opinionated you because that's what makes your channel interesting regardless of what content you do

Awww Becca, that's sad that YT isn't giving the love you deserve. I found your channel when you arrived in NZ and have been a fan ever since even after you left NZ. I've really enjoyed your Canada videos, I find Canada fascinating and absolutely stunning it's definitely on my travel wish list. I look forward to your videos not matter what you share, I'm not a mum but I still love and watch those videos. I really like how real your sharing is, your life is real and relatable unlike all those other big KZreadrs who have those big fancy homes, and their lavish shopping hauls. If you do take a break from YT we will understand as it's such a beast and alot of work and hours go into putting out a video and then it's reviewed by YT whether the video gets flagged or not. At the end of the day it's up to you but just know that you have a core base that loves your stuff regardless.

The thing i like most about your content is you! I like your perspective on things, you're someone i relate to and you live a life that inspires me. My favourite comment is day in the life style. You could be doing anything. KZread for me is a place to come and relax, and your videos feel like im hanging out with a friend. I like food content, outdoor content, lifestyle, and exercise content, i like seeing what other peoples grocery stores look like, and i like hearing your parenting views and seeing your kids. I think you're right to do what you enjoy and try not to overthink it! Also tell us how we can help you! Are the likes most impactful or comments, or sharing? We want to help you make this work 😊

I would really enjoy seeing a longer video of the Canadian Halloween candy tasting. I only saw it on the youtube shorts, and I want more! And I feel like youtube shorts cut off videos at weird moments. I like the home content - less so cleaning, more so the eco-friendly, thrifting, coziness - and food/meals. Less so wellness/nutrition. Some of the outdoor adventure stuff is fun, some of it I skip through (and was true of your NZ videos, too, because for a while I wasn't sure if we would ever get to travel there, so watching the outdoor adventure stuff made me sad, but now I'm watching the South Island travel videos because we get to go next year!!!!).

Hi Becca, thanks for sharing your thoughts! The summary of activities you like doing sounds very neat and thoroughly researched, I’m sure it’s possible to combine all that and still have a wide audience of excited watchers! I still love cooking your noodle recipe you did put online last year and am sure people would be very interested in more content like this as well. I was just wondering: earlier in the year you were thinking about where your career is heading and what you do for a living in the future. What about becoming a therapist yourself? You have no fear of your feelings (good or bad ones) and you’re so inspirational and uplifting thanks to that! I’m sure all the other subscribe think that as well! Why not make a living out of it 😃? I’m not sure how long it takes to get trained professionally but you are young (yes you are are!!) and I’m sure it’s worth it. You don’t have to start right away as your kids are still very young and have high needs, but just think about it I think it would suit you very well. Also you’re also such an outdoor person that I could see you as an outdoor educator of some kind. I’m a kindy teacher and used to work in a forest kindergarten which was such a good fit for me as I’m super outdoorsy as well! Good luck with your thoughts. Don’t dwell on them to long or they get stuck 🤪. Have a beautiful day ♥️

Another kiwi who used to watch regularly and now just dip in and out based on whether theme is something that interests me…definitely interested in the outdoors stuff you do. All the exploring you did while travelling to different parts of the country was a big part of your channel back then and I feel like there has been less of that. Maybe it’s because life has changed now that you have 2 kids and maybe it’s not as easy to get around in Canada. Even just seeing cafes you went to in Auckland was fun…I tried the Hokey Pokey coffee at deco cafe because I didn’t know about it until your vlog. Keep doing what you do while it is fun, but there is no point if it becomes too forced and you aren’t enjoying it. Your level of enthusiasm along with your authenticity seems to be what people love most about you so if you keep that in mind it should keep you on the right track!

Hello. Let's see, I like your channel because it is real, because you tell what is happening to you and a lot has happened to you. I like how you are, mother, athlete, entrepreneur, with ambition and creator of beautiful videos. I don't understand how the damn algorithms don't give you more visibility because you have a place in many areas. What would I like to see more often? Well, more of the city of Vancouver, the center, the shops, the museums, the facilities for children, a little of what you did in New Zealand. I also like your recipes and I don't care that your kitchen is not the most beautiful in the world. Mainly, I like you and I'm interested in what you say. You will always have me. I follow Jonna Jinton, Talasbuan, Hamymmomy or How to renovate a French Chateau. Very varied. Luck.

Keep going Becca, stick with and hopefully you will find your niche. It must be tough and I understand your predicament. I guess Americans in Canada a dime a dozen. You are not as unique there as you were here in New Zealand. People here would be more interested in how and why you are here, how you are coping, wanting to know if you needed support or help. I cam see how you can generate content from that. But if Canadians don't think of you as unique then you do have a battle. How about doing something as a beginner and letting others follow your journey? Of course it would need to be something you would enjoy. It could be a journey other's would love to follow you along with. Finding fossils or gemstones in the wild? Finding wild plants for food and healing? Making your own medicines? It doesn't matter that you know nothing, in fact it helps because others can fell equal to you as you learn, make mistakes, hit problems and grow. People can send books they have or find in second hand book stores that will help on whatever subject you choose. Anyway, all the best. I still tune in f om time to time. ❤️❤️❤️

There's loads of lifestyle vloggers who share multiple parts of their life and have success! I don't think you need to fit into a box but I totally understand this feeling and struggle, I've had similar with our channel (and have only posted shorts in the past few months). My TikTok became heavily Auckland focused and I also don't want to get stuck only ever posting about Auckland (even though I love it). It's very tricky! Wow, 40 comments and 87 likes, I was expecting to find only 3 or 4. Cheer up Becca, thing's don't seem that bad, I'm still here. I suspect some people are just getting fed up with the glut of ads on YT lately and are being turned off watching stuff. I know I am frustrated by them, but I wont give in and pay YT money to not have to put up with them. I've actually noticed a few channels with fewer views than that they would normally have had before. Hopefully a break will make you feel more refreshed and clear your head. There's also so much depressing stuff happening in the world right now that's putting a dampener on everything as well. As the song goes, "you can't please everyone, so you might as please yourself"

I've started a youtube channel previously, and pretty quickly realised I have too many interests and ideas that having one niche would A. be impossible (and boring for me) and B. mean youtube would have no idea what to do with my channel, thus get no views, and it would die. So I just watch youtube and ignore all those spouting how great it is and how much money you can make yada yada yada...

I am in the UK but have family in Auckland who are going through a similar stage of parenting as yourselves. I really enjoyed your videos in NZ, not only for travel tips but also for your perspective as a foreigner on Kiwi life with a young family. That was, of course, your channel's "unique selling point" which is unsurprisingly less the case now that you are in Canada, to many a US-lite. Knowing both the States and Canada, I am aware that there are many cultural differences but these are often very subtle and to your American audience, and elsewhere, this is not a strongly appealing USP. As others have suggested, carry on making videos on topics about which you are personally passionate, attracting subscribers with similar interests, but do it for your own satisfaction not to grow the numbers per se. You might also consider reducing your output to, for example, once a month so that you have more time to enjoy with your growing and ever more energetic family.

Great honesty vid this, very good. IMHO your gpretty good cooking skillz could be niche. I indeed 'discovered' you cause of NZ location, as a looking-to-move to NZ person. As said chasing views almost never rusults in reliable income from what I understand, only you finding true interest, and then publishing your experience of it does.

You're right. I'm a Kiwi (male, 73), and was attracted to your channel because I was curious about your experience of adapting to life in my country. I also related to your ideas on health, diet, recycling, nature etc. I watched every episode and loved it, seeing NZ anew (another great A word!) through your eyes. I was so disappointed when you had to leave, and, yes, without the Kiwi connection I soon stopped watching. I am still subscribed, and will check in occasionally. Btw, NZ has gone seriously downhill since you left, you may be better off out of here. We now have a rw-coalition (center-right) government, so a lot of what you loved about this country is about to be undone, bit by bit. The new government will be focused on entrenching white wealth and privilege, while winding back the social welfare, multiculturalism, inclusivity and climate protection that you loved. I'm so disappointed in my fellow countrymen who voted for regression.

It could be that now your primary reason for a KZread channel has passed, another medium might work better to share your ideas. Perhaps writing books? Books on travel, cooking, thrifty living, etc., that can be tied together with a common theme, e.g. how a young single-income family can survive in the current economic climate, or how a family can live in a thrifty, environmentally responsible way.

I like all your videos, and all your content! I like the variety that you provide. (Cooking, adventure, cleaning, wellness, etc.) you have an artistic knack, for making great videos. If you love it, keep doing it. If not, just think of all the great video journals you have for your kids and grandkids and others throughout the world to enjoy. Maybe it’s lower viewership because school started and people had to get into a busy routine that they don’t have as much time to watch all their KZread channels. Hold your head up and keep trying. Things will get better Becca. 💕
