Thoughts on Honey - Does It Fit Into The Gizzverse?

Фильм және анимация

My thoughts on whether King Gizzard’s song Honey fits into the Gizzverse or not. A topic that seems to be diving a lot of people, with many memes made about it - some of which that included one of my videos on it (achievement unlocked).
But regardless of the memes that I’ve seen, it’s hard to go past the connections with the song Honey albums in the past since it does just seem to be too much of a coincidence to not be referring to what we know from before.
This is my video explaining why.

What is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and the Gizzverse?
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard is an Australian rock band formed in 2010 in Melbourne, Victoria. The band consists of Stu Mackenzie (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, flute), Ambrose Kenny-Smith (vocals, harmonica, keyboards), Cook Craig (guitar, bass, vocals), Joey Walker (guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals), Lucas Harwood (bass, keyboards), Michael Cavanagh (drums, percussion), and Eric Moore (drums, percussion, management). They are known for exploring many different genres, staging energetic live shows and building a prolific discography, having released fifteen studio albums, two EPs and four live albums since the band's formation.
Many of the band's releases are based on a unique concept, yet share lyrical themes and feature characters that form a recurring cast, the most famous being Han-Tyumi, a cyborg who appears across multiple albums. Their songs also tell stories of people-vultures, bushrangers and Balrogs, as well as "lightning gods, flesh-eating beasts, sages and space-faring eco rebels". Members of r/KGATLW, a subreddit dedicated to the band, popularised the term "Gizzverse" to describe the overarching narrative of their discography, about which many theories have been propagated. In a 2017 interview, Stu Mackenzie confirmed that the band's releases are all connected, saying, "They all exist in this parallel universe and they may be from different times and different places but they all can co-exist in a meaningful way". In the same interview, drummer Eric Moore stated that even prior to the band's formation, they decided how the story will end.

Holy shit, ok this going to be a ramble and a half of a comment so strap in. I feel like Honey and Sleep Drifter are polar. Sleep drifter is about someone being far away from a person they want to be with "I can feel you next to me, in a hotel far away...I can feel you next to me and it is lovely" and honey is about being with the person "days are ever sweeter when I wake up near ya". Sleep drifter is about someone asleep, or at least in the weird hazy state of falling asleep but half waking up at times in the night. But the singer wants to stay asleep as they see the person they want to be with as they dream. And honey is about waking up. Which ties into my next point, waking up could be a metaphor for being enligned ("woke" as the kids like to say). Not to mention the clip for honey takes place at dawn. Not to mention in terms of the sounds of the song, lyrics aside sleep drifter has a very sombre sound of yearning. Where as honey has a sort of warm, viscous, springiness to the sound, like a microtonal Jack Johnson Banana Pancakes. And this whole time who is the singer talking about? Honey, The sickly syrup, the amber gates of hell, the fourth colour. Enlightenment. *galaxybrain.png* Love your work as always my dude, keep it up!

I'm leaning towards it just being a love song. Not everything has to be in the Gizzverse, you know. The ending interests me as the transition feels like it's going into a heavier song to me. I think the 'raise a drink to that notion' and 'you are the magic potion' connections are stretches at best. The amber connection seems more credible, but I'm really not sure. I didn't know Jurassic Park was a Spielberg movie! All in all, I'm on the 'just a love song' side.
