Personally, I thought Shin Godzilla would never be topped. But, it didn't take long. Minus One is so amazing. People in the theater, like at yours, clapped and then just sat there taking it all in... as if stunned.

Watched it today again. My favorite film of the year. Had the fun and the story rolled into one. So rarely you get an iconic IP get such treatment in a sea of IP busts currently.

It's my favorite movie of the year (maybe even the last 3 years). I agree, so true.

Daisuke, you took the words out of my mouth. I saw Godzilla Minus One a week ago, and I was stunned. What an amazing film. I was so impressed with the overall story: touching upon elements of the human condition, near the end of World War 2, and its aftermath. We get a new "nuclear family", arising from the ashes of a real Atomic conflict. Seeing Shikishima making a family with Noriko and Akiko , trying to provide for them by joining a semi professional minesweeper ship , being judged by Tachibana for not sacrificing himself near the end of the war ..... trying to come to terms with his own feelings of inadequacy and wanting to tell Noriko how he really feels..... even dealing with the judgmental point of view of his neighbor...... proving himself during a truly worthy cause, and having all , realize they couldn't continue to judge him...... made for an both at times sad commentary, but also uplifting story by the end. It spoke volumes too, when the early threat of Godzilla appeared, and none of the major world powers wanted to help out (despite having all been part of the problem.) War is a horrid waste. Our own personal biases can be like a nuclear bomb in the personalized devastation it can leave. Even the revelation of Godzilla..... showing Godzilla as the long lost dinosaur, on the island..... then the test atomic bomb mutating him, into the version of the strange atomic powered beast we all know...... having the story take place in the mid to late 1940's..... the film seemed to really be ingenious , in being a sort of prequel to the very first Gojira / Godzilla King of the Monsters. It was such a great way to handle the film, in handling it as a prequel of a kind. Takashi Yamasaki's directorial work, his crew, handling cinematography, sets, costumers, lighting and special effects...... it really was all so amazing, tasteful and really set the mood. The actors / actresses did a truly amazing job. By the end, I felt so moved by the film. It is a fitting addition to the Godzilla / Toho Kaiju cinema history. I've been a fan , since my childhood in the 1970's (I'm about 10 years older than you.) I firmly agree..... this is one of the very best in the series. My childhood friend and I have been discussing the film and raving about it to anyone who will listen. He's already seen it a second time. I only wonder (hope ? ) if the film company / producers will add to the series in as creative and artistically inspiring manner, after this amazing slice of cinema. I'm quite satisfied by the amazing quality of the film. thanks for your thoughts into the film ! best, Chris Mosca, Johnston RI

I'm really impressed by how well this is doing in America for a subtitled movie and from a Japanese perspective. Testament to the incredible writing and acting (and all the rest of course)

Finally saw it, tonight! Really loved the film. Beyond it being a good Godzilla film, it was just a great film overall. Great change of pace to have people come together of their own volition to find a solution, rather than it being another big government roundtable. All of the characters felt very well written, as well.

Very glad you enjoyed the film, Daisuke! It’s right up there with the 1954 original for me, and I think the emotional elements of the story made it more impactful than Shin Godzilla. Toho still knows how to deliver the goods!

I’ve seen it three times and there is so much going on in this film on many levels. You can watch it as a literal monster movie and it’s great. You can examine all the allegorical aspects of what’s happening and how it relates to guilt and war, the power of forgiveness and community and it’s great as well. It’s so well written and the characters are wonderfully used to humanize the message behind the film. I want to see it at least once more before it’s out of theaters. I cried each time I’ve watched it and I will probably cry again the fourth time.

Totally agree with your comments Daisuke, caught it on Saturday with my son and what a film. Really captured the true horror of what happens to the people during such an attack. A phenomenal film in every sense of the word 😃

I appreciated many of the human moments and learning more about Japanese culture. But the movie never scared me. The original Jaws actually scared me.

Everyone seems to love this film, which makes me curious about it. But I was awaiting your opinion, especially; knowing that Godzila is a product of your culture. And you have spoken quite a validation indeed.

Daisuke! Que the Blue Oyster Cult! I'm so happy to hear you were able to see this film on the big screen! It was a lot of fun to be reminded of the theater experience with such an iconic character that works a lot better on the theater screen with the surround sound. I loved how this film had a sort of Grave of the Fireflies vibe/level of severity going on in terms of taking care of the little girl post WWII. The internal struggles of the characters including the new generation young lad who had no experience in the war but still played a crucial role! Awesome. I enjoyed how the scientist presented his plan to destroy Godzilla and I thought the execution of the plan/twist at the end was thrilling. I loved how it tied up the relationship between the main character and the mechanic who worked on his plane. Godzilla's charged-up "bad breath" attack was so powerful and awesome to see in this film! My favorite part is with the newscaster on the rooftop as Godzilla approaches. His dedication to his job is so impressive and the faces/mannerisms he makes as he reports the situation is classic Godzilla movie stuff! It was for me a real honor to get to see this in theaters and be taken back to childhood when I was introduced to Godzilla and by way of that, Japan as well. To hear the iconic Godzilla roar as well as the music that has been used since the original in glorious high volume was worth the price of admission alone. So glad to hear you enjoyed this, my friend! I know what a fan of Godzilla you are and I must find a copy of Shin-Godzilla on region-free blu-ray now as I have yet to see that one but I have heard how good it is. I still cherish Mothra vs Godzilla, Final Wars, Godzilla 1985 and the original the most but also the American cartoon too as a guilty pleasure. It will be great to one day go through more Godzilla films and become more familiar with the canon myself. Hope you're having an easy-going week as of the time of this comment, Daisuke! Cheers! P.S. I watched my Criterion copy of the Mike Leigh film Life is Sweet for the first time yesterday. It makes the film Naked even better! Such a classic that hit me a lot more after it was over and I thought about it all. It also made the film Hot Fuzz and Gangs of New York better for me by way of several characters appearing including Bono of U2! Ha! "Vote Tammany!!" Cheers, my friend! 🇯🇵🦖🗾

Been a G-Man fan since I was 5 years old, watching the old 60's and 70's movies on Saturday mornings. I didn't like the '97 American version, but I enjoyed the legendary movies for the same dumb fun/monster fight factor. This movie not only took the story back to its roots of a terrifying monster that is as evil and destructive as he can be, but it took the franchise to a new level, finally giving us human characters with depth that we care about, and an entire story that wasn't just filler between Godzilla attacks. I'm so glad to see it succeeding amidst the box office collapse of bloated overpriced Hollywood garbage.

Going to see Minus One tomorrow I'm buzzing to see it (my mum doesn't want to see it but then again I and my mum have got unlimited cards for our local cinema) Hollywood take note you don't need to make big budget films to break even

Hey Daisuke. I am so glad that you were able to experience this phenomenal film. I know you typically don’t tend to watch modern films, so I’m glad you were able to catch one of the best of the year. Alongside the likes of Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, and Past Lives.
