Herbie Hancock is an award-winning jazz composer and musician with a rich, stylistically diverse canon of songs that include "Maiden Voyage" and "Rockit."
“The thing that keeps jazz alive, even if it's under the radar, is that it is so free and so open to not only lend its influence to other genres, but to borrow and be influenced by other genres. That's the way it breathes.”
-Herbie Hancock
Synopsis
Born on April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, piano great Herbie Hancock worked with Donald Byrd and Miles Davis while developing his own jazz recording career, beginning with his debut album, Takin' Off. Hancock explored a number of genres, as seen on albums like Mwandishi and Head Hunters, and had a 1980s hit with the mix-fest "Rockit." A film composer as well, he has won an Academy Award and many Grammy Awards.
Background and Education
Born on April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, Herbert Jeffrey Hancock began studying piano when he was 7 years old. A few years later, as a tween, he was playing Mozart with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He began to enjoy jazz compositions during his high school years and, upon entering Grinnell College in 1956, decided to focus on electrical engineering. The major initially seemed more practical and allowed him to invest in his passion for technology. Yet Hancock decided to switch over to music composition and formed his own group, later moving to New York to play with trumpeter Donald Byrd.
Album Debut: 'Takin' Off'
Herbie Hancock landed a record deal with Blue Note and released his debut album as the head of a band, Takin' Off, which garnered fame as the first album on the Blue Note roster to feature all newly composed tunes, like the seminal "Watermelon Man." While continuing to record and pen future classics like "Cantaloupe Island" and "Maiden Voyage," Hancock played with Miles Davis. Starting in 1963, he would be part of the bandleader's group for several years, with the two influencing each other's sound and Davis introducing Hancock to the electric piano.
Musical Explorer
Over the ensuing years, via the release of dozens of albums, Hancock established a reputation as an outstanding composer who feels free to explore genres outside of traditional jazz, ranging from fusion to R&B to hip-hop. The sonically radical, mystical and revered Mwandishi (1970) was followed a bit later by the funk-based, platinum-certified Head Hunters (1973); the album featured "Chameleon" and another version of "Watermelon Man," whose sexy grooves would later be sampled in hip-hop/reggae circles. 1977's "Sunlight" featured rejuvenating soul with Hancock himself on vocoder vocals.
He continued playing in different forms, including stints with the V.S.O.P. quintet that reunited members of Davis' band. 1983's Future Shock featured the award-winning, blipped-out single "Rockit," known for its MTV coolness.
The following decades saw more releases on different labels, including Dis Is Da Drum (1994), Gershwin's World (1998), honoring George Gershwin's 100th birthday, and the electronica-oriented Future 2 Future (2001). 2010's The Imagine Project saw the composer working with an international cast that included Céu, Pink, Seal and Juanes.
Film/TV Scores and Awards
Hancock has also provided scores to a number of TV and film projects. He penned music for Bill Cosby's Fat Albert cartoon and an accompanying album as well as for films like Death Wish (1974), A Soldier's Story (1984) and Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling (1986). He won an Academy Award for the score to 'Round Midnight (1986), co-starring in the project as well.
By 2013, Herbie Hancock had won 14 Grammy Awards, including for album of the year in 2008, for his tribute to friend Joni Mitchell, River: The Joni Letters-marking the first time in more than four decades that the award went to a jazz musician. The album featured artists like Tina Turner, Norah Jones and Leonard Cohen.

I don't think Herbie has a non-Beast mode

I'd second that, Jim... He's always right there amazing us. Once I heard him and Wayne Shorter... we were all on a vacation in Mexico in a little Resort and there was a lounge with a Hammond Organ in it. Wayne didn't have his sax so he just whistled. But Herbie sat down and turned on the Hammond and just tore up.... it was just a fun impromptu with about 10 of us there to hear and still Herbie... cooked... even though he is not a Hammond player... still a keyboard.

Jim McKeon I concur with your statement!
Herbie is one of the greatest musicians of all time, but absolutely not because of his 'beast mode' moments. Because of his tone, sound, timing, groove, imagination, feel, overall musicality, openness, diversity, humor and sensibility.
Dave Holland ...total beast holding the fort down on #2, #3
I would say, 7 of the times Herbie Hanckok went beast mode. He is such a great musician !!!
Actual Talent 😂 Love ya Herbie!
Great moments
Keith Jarrett would be a good one too. These are awesome my dude
man oh man...yes
Herbie lives on beast mode ave....beastville..in Beast Nation.....
Herbie is obviously super great, but the drummer keeping up and his facial expressions are special.... Herbie going so-called beast reminds a bit of Keith Emerson in his prime. Both are/were serious keyboard talents!
A night in Tunisia with Art Blakey should be on here..... That was INSANE!!!

Hello old friend
Me thinks its the drummer that went Beast mode in #1
'Beast mode' = muscle playing/testosterone playing/virtuoso playing/fast playing/loud playing. Right? Great parameter of music? Not in the least.
'Beast mode' is showing off, right? Showing off has nothing to do with (making) music.
Where’s the dumbest Herbie’s moments video?
I love Herbie, but 'beast mode' is a stupid and horrific term.
Let's be honest...there may only be 7 times when he didn't go beast mode.

You gotta have the players to play with for beast mode. Omar. Dave. John. Wayne. Jack. Brian. Stanley. I'm not surprised. Birds of a feather play together.

Herbie was at his best with THE quartet. Many bass players and drummers can vibe with Herbie, but you'll NEVER get that synergy with ANYONE else, that you'll get with him, Ron Carter and Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter.
I love seeing creativity flow through the hands and feet of these talented musicians
Killer drummer
Man, Omar was killing on the first tune.

@bernie's bootlegs & more ........i am not on your crack, but you should check nevertheless, someone might be on it, cause you look like they don't even ask you when they want it, they just slide in.
man that first one is straight madness
Great video! Personally I think that not only best Hancock solo but perhaps the best jazz piano solo of all time is Herbies solo on All of You, on Miles Davis live album "My funny valentine" '64. The way he builds up the solo, and breaks it down again, only to build it up yet again. superb. Hancock kind of reminds me of Beethoven. Neither are very known for heart melting beautiful melodies, like Mahler or Bill Evans, but what the way they use music is more focused on rythmics and harmoy. I actually didn't think of that comparisson untill just now! Quite fascinating actually
Thanks for the post, Bernie. Herbie IS a beast. But I believe that ultimately, any band is only as good a its drummer. I believe Herbie feel that way too.
1:17 to 1:20 his face is priceless😂
Masterful and beautiful. I first learned about Herbie seeing him on Sesame Street in the 80s.
Herbie is amazing! Still can't believe I've seen him live
7 times I cried.

Happy about your choice for #4! That particular solo arrangement of Dolphin Dance is my favorite!
LOVE THIS..JAZZ AND BEYOND
I love the way he plays......
Out of only 7, i go for the most gruesome beast #5, but then again, they are all very frightening!
No keyboards or synths? A striking omission

Dolphin Dance......
He played his &*# off on the New Standard tour. Everyone did.
I'd put in his Rhodes solos on "4 AM" and "Actual Proof".
and that little rhythmic thang at 0:59 is just the seasoning!...
awesome
I believe that #4 - the solo version of his exquisite classic 'Dolphin Dance', is from the 1983 Wold of Rhythm - Live in Lugano tour he did with Ron Carter and Billy Cobham.
James Carter will give you a total beast mode highlight reel!

Betty-Alexandria Pride Haha! I was just thinking God speed to anyone trying to keep up with Herbie Hancock. That would also apply to James Carter. You must be amazing to even get the chance to play with any of these guys. What instrument to you play?
no.4 takes it hands down (so to speak) it shows the great man's true range.
chet baker. i highly recommend this wonderful artist. thank you.
...and these are only the 7 times we know about! A true King.
Awesome moments thanks for posting!
1:21 this face of pure joy
Drummers face @1:18 😂🙌🙌🙌🙌. Like “what the hell Herbie doin’l. Full beast mode!
7? i'm guessing we could easily add another 6993.... to maybe make it an even 7,000... and I'm sure there would still be a lot more. But 7 is a start. Herbie is a Beast pretty much any time he plays. He gives it all...
Chick Corea, Oscar Peterson moments
I like that u do these type of videos. Because there are so many vidoes of herbie and other great musicians. But these are hand picked selections that are great. Keep it up
Let's not forget about the incredible musicians playing along with him.
I’m watching this in a nail salon waiting for my mother to get her nails done and laughing so hard that I started crying, thanks for making this bald experience enjoyable
Missing is concert solo on Solar with Metheny, Holland and DeJohnette - absolutely amazing solo - when he goes into beast mode, you can see Holland and Metheny just laugh in amazement
INCREDIBLE!!!!
Beyond creative excellence, thank you!
#4 My master
Number 4 is so great #4 - [7:04] - Dolphin Dance - Lugano / Supertrio in Concert" Recorded live at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano, Switzerland, 1984 Thanks !
Herbie Hancock uses Piano Play. And it's super effective !!
#5 !!!! El mejor!!! Sobretodo por el acompañamiento de Al Foster, impresionante!!!
Definetely #6!
Herbie propelled his band.
Outstanding
Love How Sco is totally digging Herbie on #2.
dude you rock !
D drummers n other instrumentalists though😍
I suppose if you are confined to video, this comp would be tough to top. If we were to expand to audio-only, "Hang Up Your Hangups" from _Flood_ and a particular live version of "Wiggle Waggle" circa 1970 (Bremen?) come to mind off the top of my head. Anyway, love your channel! Thank you for posting all this wonderful rare music!
The first one... Take a look to the source. Amazing !
Beast mode on!
Great video thankyou
shit this guy really kills it... I been on my jazz kick for a year and half now haven't even started listening to this guy yet. my earth science teacher showed me him one morning before I got into jazz I was just turned on by some obscure swedish jazz or Norway or whatever the hell but I was really only into Brubeck at the time. don't get me wrong but he just doesn't swing like these guys can. damn I missed this guy on the upper west side I was there the other night with my bro! we walked by the beacon theater it was over already. gotta catch him again when I move down there for college
I don't understand how this is beastmode...he's always playing heavy stuff 😂
"Which solos did I leave out?": kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3iazc2LkZS8cZs.html . The whole thing is very highly recommended, but HH's solo, starting around 12:00, is one of his most touching. Maybe you just wanted the Beast, and not Beauty!
Omar Hakim Drum solo next
Nice post!
Those 7 times? Herbie is always a beast!
Even if he's not my personal favourite (my personal favourite IS George Duke, upon whom Hancock is possibly the biggest influence) I kind of consider Herbie the objective GOAT jazz pianist... he's the Miles of piano, mastering and driving every new era of jazz - bebop, hard bop, post-bop, modal, fusion, right up till the present day. And you're not gonna tell me that Cantaloupe Island solo isn't one of the greatest keyboard solos ever put down. What a fucking lineup too, Shorter is just as much of a legend, Stanley's one of my favourite bassists and that drummer is monstrous!
