He didn't said that. And we can do useful things as pleasure, like reading books about subjects you like and can be useful in your life or playing simulation games about real skills that you will use, like flying simulator if you're a pilot
Yeah don't spend eight hours a day on games, and wake up one day and have no skills to manage real life. Don't spend 12 hours a day working and forget to relax with some fun games. Life is all about balance man, that's my philosophy.

Reading these comments makes me believe that most people didn't watch the entire video or just weren't able to properly comprehend what was being said.
I do see your argument, and while I do think gaming may not be the most productive thing, there are definately some things i've learned from it: 1. Helped fix my anger management issues. 2. Helped with my handwriting (better hand eye coordination), this has been a life-saver for me in AP exams. 3. Helped me fight depression and stress 4. Helped me become a more patient person. 5. Taught me not to gamble and how addicting it could be (after losing a lot in betting.) It ain't the most productive thing i've done, but its still productive and has helped me make other aspects of my life more productived.

Well if you spend all your time saying what you think on the internet. Your bound to piss off many people!
I work 11 hour days five days a week, I don't view coming home on a weeknight and getting a few hours in on Dota 2 as a waste of time. If you do nothing else outside of gaming then it might be a waste of time, but humans aren't built to be 100% productive every hour of their lives. Sometimes you need to relax or do something you derive enjoyment out of.
It's not wasting your time if you enjoy it.

Sick video, can't believe you did this whole thing unedited. Or even if it was a little bit edited, it's still amazing.
This was a very good video Thooorin. This is actually a topic I've been thinking about lately... What am I really doing? I used to play League like a madman a couple of years backwards and really enjoyed it, watch tv-shows and anime that were really fun to watch and were exciting, but lately for some reason I have not enjoyed doing those things because I have wondered in my head "Why am I doing this?" Like even watching this video before I watched it I had the exact feeling "Should I really watch this? Is this going to be a waste of time?" This is something I really want to get rid of. HOW do I stop this way of thinking that in a way EVERYTHING is a waste of time and therefore I shouldn't do anything because it would just waste my time. Im not enjoying anything because I keep thinking like this and is there any way to get rid of this kind of thinking or to change my mindset that everything would not be waste of my time?

I just realized how pedagogue you are. I mean, you have this fantastic way of explaining basic things ( in this video's case ) in such an interesting manner. I had the same concept as you on this topic but you teached it so well that, like, I felt obliged to watch the entire video to truly understand what I vaguely thought before lmao. Thank you for this enjoyable waste of time. ps: Also you train my english comprehension as a foreigner, 10/10 would recommend again
Thooorin, I actually get excited when I see you have released a new video. I drove home from work looking forward to watch this. I had a good laugh at your *don't use internet explorer* lol. Always looking forward to the next.
"Time is the only true currency' - Duncan 'Thorin' Shields Brilliant mate!
I'd like to take this moment to thank thorin for making this video. Thanks for bringing perspective to this topic.
Good god man this video made me reconsider my entire moral basis. You actually said a lot of things that get said all the time but they way you put them really got through to me and like opened my eyes... So much knowledge dropped in 1 video.
I absolutely loved this video. Thanks for making and uploading this, Thorin! :-)
i think this is the best Video youve ever Made Duncan. i didnt realise we are so similar in our way of thinking
Hey man, ive been trough depression in the last months, and this video helped me trying to make the first step out of it, thaks a lot!
You're a very enlightened person Duncan, much respect. Always enjoy your insight on various subjects, keep on keeping on.
The good old switcharoo at the end, 10/10 and emotional rollercoaster
so, every time somebody said to me that gaming is a waste of time they put this whole time wast thing on a completely different level than other hobbies or activities in general that you are doing when you're not at work or at sleep. For example and i actually tried this, if i decide to spend my weekend playing games and having fun, it's considered a waste of time by most people, parents especially, however, if i spend the same amount of time on the weekend reading a book, or chilling in the park or strolling through the woods or whatever the fuck, it's not! and this is what annoys me the most personally, and i bet i'm not the only one, the fact that people tend to "downgrade" gaming to a whole new level of wasting time, basically the worst thing you can do in your freetime apart from drugs and hookers, when in reality, it's the same fucking thing as spending your free time with any other activity that only "produces" fun. It's a ridiculous point of view.

Love the content. I'm wondering if you'd have the time to put together a list of your favorite movies. (can't really pay you for it though) It would make for a pretty interesting set of films considering your rather sophisticated and rational worldview. I think many of your followers would be highly interested and appreciate it a million-fold. Just watched The Fountain, an extremely outstanding piece, with a powerful message. Have no idea how I missed this. Thanks!

You should write a book Thorin your thoughts are en capturing and inspiring.
Great episode,I really enjoyed listening to you and it helped me about some decisions i had
Wow this video turned out deeper then I suspected.. Great points are covered here, you've earned my sub.
Thorin you got philosophical as fuck on this video. Haha. Great work! I've never really tried to validate wasting my time on video games with the making money aspect, but it is nice to see larger prize pools and more production quality.
Would you say how good you are at the game adds more conext to the arguement, for example if I am a Global in CS:GO after a year of playing and I feel I could advance to a semi-pro level and make a living off it, would that make playing CS less of a waste of time since I can be making a "living" as vague as the value of that arguement is?
Fucking beautiful, Thorin. You've really outdone yourself with this one. The only promise in life is time, and we are what we make of it.
Hahah, gotta love this guy. Great videos lately Thooorin.

Nice video man, thanks. Subbed !! Also thanks for that HotshotGG inverview
Haven't seen a thorin video in a while. I saw this suggested, you're a good man. All sports are a waste of time in the end. Even if you enjoy it it's still background noise. Football is a waste of time. Theres no point of deluding yourself. Its good to have downtime sometimes of course but advancing yourself is important too. Just dont pretend its advancing you in any way. Typing this before i finished the video was foolish. I love you man
So what if affect on mood in good way depressive individuals which social life push them to that same depression, is that also waste of time?
Pretty on point from Thorin It's in a sense a place between physical sports and watching okay telly: You have a miniscule chance of getting money, fame and a job out of it, and you get entertainment and something to improve at, while learning and improving in some general areas like language, teamwork, concentration, etc (depending on game). Less health benefits than sports and often more time spent than sports, bit like telly, so more harmful to other activities
I honestly love the approach thorin shows in most if not all his videos. To me its an injection of reality that I need.
I feel like cs:go is significantly improving my cognitive ability. Especially aspects like awareness, reaction, critical thinking and even motor control. The fire and ash analogy is a little too far removed from reality Thorin. Lifetime skills should not be likened to ash.
I love the way Thooorin plugs Alphadraft whenever he can xD
My understanding of a career is that, as opposed to a job, a career is an occupation that you would still enjoy doing for free. I enjoy learning and teaching music, and I am going to school for music education. I do it for free, but of course it will become a paid career for me. That is just how civilization around art works. If you are not producing material goods then you are wasting time. At least that's what we are taught. educators are paid very poorly where I come from (dead last in the United States), and I'm fine with that. No delusions about that. Good video Thorin. You surprise regularly me with how well versed you are with your wide array of philosophical understanding compared to most interviewers / commentators. This is an area of life I think about a lot.
thorin loved the fountain too, watched it back as a sneak preview, blew my mind
I can 100% agree to this. I play games every evening when i come home from my job as a goldsmith. My parents think its a waste of time, but it actually helps me get my mind of things and relax, since my job is really stressful in the sense that u have to be at 100% mentally 100% of the time or otherwise u risk destroying value. Then on the other hand some people might say that goldsmith is a waste of time since u dont add any direct value to peoples lifes its more of an art then something productive. But most people that come to us go away happy with an item that reminds them of someone that died recently, something that symblizes a relationship or even just something beautiful on its own.
Thank you sir its great video. It really helped me. Understand what is waste of time and how not overthing about it.
one of your best videos ever. damn were those 26 minutes not wasted
i really appreciate thorins videos.
Can someone here explain the meaning of "intrinsic"? I thought it was - related to economics - the material value of money. Is that true/wrong, or does intrinsic just have multiple meanings?
@masterchip27
8 жыл бұрын
+artsYedITs It's related to economics because economics is about the value of goods and services. Intrinsic value is value you get that would still exist whether or not your external surroundings change. Extrinsic value is value that is determined by the external factors.
@artsYedITs

My general opinion is life is about balance. Finding the perfect balance is key. We can't just work or in some cases for young people, study all day. Sometimes we would really explode when we get to the point of extreme stress and when you can't handle too much shit anymore. You'll need a good break and relaxation. It can come from anything. Playing video games or sports, reading books, watching movies or tv shows, watching some sports, listening music or anything that is stress reliving. After you are done,go back to work or studies with a bit of a fresh mind. On the flip side of the coin, don't over spent too much on it. It literally will become a waste of time and something you do as a way of being productive will just become a waste of time. Been there before and not something I look at it with fondness sometimes. That's just my opinion and thoughts. You will have a better opinion than what I have
Always a pleasure to waste my time with you, sir Thooorin.
wow, the last bit was surprisingly motivating
Yeah, you right. I'm not going to stop playing though
When you speak of time as the ultimate goal, the supreme currency, it reminded me of that film with Justin Timberlake, called "In Time". I don't know if you've seen it, Thorin, but it is a very similar premise to the idea of time as the most important thing in life. Effectively, in the film, everyone of the citizens has an implant under their skin which has their "time" or bank balance, and it runs out because time is finite, or so the plebs are lead to believe. But the rich, the elite, have unlimited time and are effectively immortal. People by and sell using time as currency, everything, from Mars bar to a house, costs units of time. But another world exists, away from the poor, who are told they only get a set period of time, that is filled with the rich and powerful, people who know the truth...that there is enough time for everyone to live forever, but they can't let the poor know this or the whole system collapses, much like the way money today only has value because the "people" believe it does, or authority only has power because we are programmed to think it does. Anyway, great video and enough you haven't seen the film it's worth a watch.
Thorin, doing these videos is definitely not a waste of time. I enjoy listening to you logically reasoning stuff. Whatever it is.
Thank you for this.
This was a great video, I wonder why Thorin is not at a million subs yet.
Finally a real alphadraft ad!! I cracked with it! Nice video as always
I work and my main hobby is gaming ( even though I like a whole slew of other things, mainly sports related ). I am 25 now and gaming has given me some of my most cherished moments in life. All the fun I've had with friends and clans in internet cafes and all that. All the time I've played WoW in skype with my best friends and raiding or doing LAN nights and getting drunk while raid leading or playing other games while int he same room, or just shoot the shit in Diablo 3. All the people I've spoken with extensively and made friends with that are all from every part of the world. Beats going to the club every night and "having a life".

This video is absolutely perfect across the board, everything you said was on point.
there is no such thing as "waste of time" funny how people think time should always be used for a goal... gaming isn't a waste of time. you are experiencing what life has to give, especially what other life has done, and you are experiencing it. no other form of life created that exact copy of it, 100 years from now, they will never experience it. you, uniquely, are experiencing it. there is no such thing as a waste of time, contextually. If you have a perspective, in terms of a goal, then any means of prolongingness is a waste of time. like if you want to become the best chef in the world, then simply talking with your friends is a waste of time. any distraction from your main goal is a waste of time. however, it isn't always the case that productivity equal the negation of waste of time. Is reading a book a waste of time for a chef? is it a waste of time for a racing driver to learn how to cook? is it a waste of time to do anything? every single life on this planet is experiencing something with their life, now criticizing another person's time used is a waste of time, since that does not do anything productive in every single form of thought.

Interesting, points. I'd like to talk about this that you say: "Gaming, like any hobby, is a waste of time and not a legitimate career for the sake of a stable source of income" However, there are professions such as being an artist, actor and poet, which are recognized as legitimate jobs but just like gaming, the financial success only applies to a select few, while the vast majority do not have much financial security or a stable income.
Dude holy shit thank you for mentioning The Fountain, one of my favorite movies, by FAR!!
Really good video. Can you +Thooorin make one about competing?

one of your best videos thorin. thanks
Listening to this gave me so many flashbacks to my Philosophy final presentation. ...I should take another Philosophy class...
This video was incredibly enlightening. Thank you Thorin.
Great perspective as always. Keep it up.
I'll just say that if gaming is a waste of time, then so is: -listening to music -watching TV -playing sports -playing card games -playing chess -watching a show -swimming -martial arts -going to the cinema Point is, we are allowed free time and hobbies even if we aren't being productive.
You know when your future boss asks you 'what do you think you are in a group, do you see yourself as a leader? Or just as someone who obeys orders, or someone who wants to be a leader, but more like a second leader etc... I never knew what i wanted to be in a group, not in school and in no job. Through CS i realized i really shine at leading. Took me 1300 hours to realize that. I learned to be patient, how to integrate people in a group etc. Im studying economics. So who knows, maybe this is going to help me alot in future jobs/companys.
Video games saved my life, it was the only thing that carried me through depression. I wouldn't be here right now if I hadn't found them.
The requirements of such an activity calls for a substantial consumption of time, in which,as a neccesity, is of higher importance than the gratification that recreation produces. Although emotional pleasure is an undeniable desire, greater things of importance should be made the top priority over the pursuit of enjoyement.
Living itself is a waste of time. We might as well do the things we enjoy while we are here. Because in the end, all that will have mattered is if we enjoyed the time that was given to us.
If I live a life where I work enough hours to make enough money to support living with and contributing to my family is it a waste of time to chase be coming better at csgo, with the understanding it'll take years before I see a return? Since I am getting fiber optics in Australia eventually and wanna try out twitch streaming. With my main attraction being good at the game with the time I've spent waiting for better internet? Sorta like passionately training basket ball and being able to for years at time?
