True. I wished they had done way more with that kind of ideas. Valhalla was a really cool idea, but otherwise, they have just done the whole character development through dialogue. Which isn't necessarily bad in itself, but the dialogue in itself was also a bit bland. There was so much more possible I feel.

I got chills when we see a flash of Thorfinn as a warrior. A stark reminder that despite Thorfinn's decision to be a pacifist, he still possess most of his skills and fighting experience that allowed him to survive countless battles and Thorkell.

@@ixnexus Not really? He's fought Thorkell who's comfortably above him. Honestly maybe even Garm is stronger, that fight they had on the roof wasn't exactly his full power. Also Snake is only stronger than Askeladd in physical power, he's still smarter and more experienced so he might still win

THAT FIRST SHOT OF THORFINN with his quivering face really killed me! It portrays his conflicting emotions so well! And when he puts on his "stance" I immediately thought of a boxer, or another "non-deadly" martial art that focuses more on "knock you out" than "cut your stomach with a sword". Brilliant scene!

​@Hammurabi I. It's a needed nerf, so Thorfinn doesn't completely gut snake. This makes the fight sort of even and gives snake a chance. Also seems like snake never fought someone who uses daggers as their main. He would definitely be unfamiliar with the combat style and die.

I don't think it is necessarly considered violence as he does not wish to harm his "opponent", but I guess that depends on your definition and what Thorfinn is willing to do to incapacitate him.

I love how Throfinn's hand is trembling at 1:30 but as soon as he clenches his fist (or grabs his imaginary daggers) it is dead calm. In that moment he let go of anything holding him back and reverted to the state of mind which he would be in during the countless battles he has fought over the years.

From Snake's perspective he probably thought Thorfinn was feeling fear. It kinda shows by the way he's looking at him until Thorfinn goes into his stance. The second he closes his fist and steady's himself Snake's instinct kicks in telling him that Thorfinn is not a threat to take lightly. I know this is probably obvious but I love the complete visual story telling. This scene is so sick and beautifully animated.

I think youre correct he is prob comes from somewhere between the regions is Constantinopel. But his sword wasnt being used by the soldiers of constaninopel. The sword has the design of turkish sword or even arabic. If you want look it up. I dont know with one it is but cant wait for the reveal of his backstory

The insane thing is that this echoes back to Thorfinn's father Thors, who fought only with fists. He's becoming his father.

The passion the staff behind this show has for this series is amazing to see. You can tell they love the series as much as we do, and do their best to do give it proper justice.

The insane emotion and hype purely from Thorfinn raising his hands into his dagger stance is why the writing of this show is GOAT. This scene gives me the same chills as any big anime fight from demon slayer, Juju, AoT etc........VInland Saga is fkn Goat'd

I just love how snake sees thorfinn deciding to fight. He sees the stance. Sees his face. And knows immediately, symbolized by the energy going up his sword, that he is about to face a true warrior.

The echoing of the sword gives me goosebumps and it clearly sees how much strength thorfinn used to kick it before the worst. 10/10 one of the best scenes so far.

You just know what’s going through Snakes head through this whole encounter… “I knew he was a warrior”

This scene takes Episode 16 to a whole new level... The intensity in this scene gives pure goosebumps! This fight will be one of the best fight in Vinland Saga (2019- ). Now, I can't wait anymore for Episode 17 to watch this fight... ❤️‍🔥

Brilliant Snake has been suspicious all the while but now he knew his skills is about to be truly tested by an Agile and deadly warrior. Even grandpa crawled out to witness the epic fight.😅

This episode was a bomb of emotions, thorfinn is surely one of the best protagonists ever.

It better get a season 3. I want to see Gudrid, Hild, and especially Thorfinn vs Garm animated.

i doubt it... already they had a hard time to convince the company to get a second season and is a full passion proyect. the first season didnt make much of a profit and the 2nd season is being overshadowed by other more popular animes. number wise the second season is even lower in rating than the first season too.

not that I disagree with you, but that's actually not the message that he and Thors are trying to convey. To put it in Thors words himself, "A true warrior wouldn't need a sword". He wasn't speaking litteraly, but metaphorically. Having to resort to violence, even as a last resort, is still considered a failure in their eyes. They want a world entirely without violence, and dont view that goal as a meaningful one if they have to resort to violence in order to get to it. It's extremely naive and unrealistic, but thats their true ideal.

You cant even avoid killing. Any one of the people thors injured could have broken their neck and died. They just didnt for plot purposes. If you punch or shove someone they could still die.

Thorfinn taking his warrior pose, the one he's always taken, with the intention of defending himself without killing, because now he know what to do, makes me so proud of him.

Thorfinn isn't fighting for death anymore, but for life

1:31 Doesn’t completely clench his fist, leaving space for where the hilt of his steel would go. Incredible attention to detail. Muscle memory is a helluva synapse.

Seeing his immature behavior coupled with the killer skills in Season 1 made me appreciate Season 2. He has grown tremendously in this season. One of the greatest characters ever written.

Man seeing Askeladd besides Thorfinn always hits hard. Even in death, Thorfinn's 2nd father figure is giving him useful advice. This whole interaction between Snake and Thorfinn was animated incredibly. Can't wait for the fight next episode with such a deep meaning behind it.

I really feel a lot of the sound effects for this season were incredible. The sound of Throfinn deflecting the sword and the impact revibrating through the blade, the sound of Thorfinn taking his stance, Snake's combat intuition/senses warning him of Thorfinn. All so good.

"I didn't choose violence, violence chose me!" -Thorfinn, maybe.

This scene hits hard after a very “relaxing” season so far really puts to light how thorfin feels

I love that they're not only showing Thorfinn's experience show through but also Snake's as well. You can tell just by his thought process of predicting Thorfinn's fighting style and what weapons he used to use.

the visual storytelling in this scene is awesome. Especially this moment 1:31 with snakes reaction to Thorfinn getting in stance

If you have to pray, PRAY; if you have to eat, EAT and if you have to fight FIGHT. Being present in the moment fully 100%. This is the message from this scene, love the Askeladd moment as it explains this concept.

Best episode of season 2 in my opinion . The animation is on point with this episode . Season keeps getting better and better 👑👑👑 .

I got goosebumps, and not because we’re finally getting a Thorfinn fight scene, but because Thorfinn, despite having fears of hurting people again, felt a stronger desire to protect what was important to him. He had a REASON to fight. And it reminded me so much of his dad. 😭

Thorfinn going through his development of figuring out how he’ll be able to defend the type of community he wants to make is hype!!!!

Askeladd’s presence, animation, sounds, Thorfinn’s signature position, honestly, I yelled of simp

Snake had a neuron activation moment

Snake getting that sudden spark, like the animal part of his brain suddenly realized it wasn’t just dealing with prey: **This is a predator - be wary**

It is not a posture, it is THE POSTURE with which this goat made hundreds of kills and with the same one that faced the mighty Thorkell

Askeladd being like: “So I heard you thought of me when you fought this guy the first time…” And poor Thorfinn. The moment he swears off violence, they pull him back in. Love that Snake’s warrior instincts knew he was fighting a warrior the moment Thorfinn took a stance.

The sound design on this scene is perfect, worked very well bringing tension to the scene alongside the lack of music. Cheers Mappa

This anime has me such in a choke hold, it’s such a great development story. I wish thorfinn would fight more like s1 but the character development is just too amazing to want different for season 2.

The OST in this fight is called “savage wind” by Yutaka yamada 1:46

He didn't choose violence he chose protection. He chose what he couldn't choose with his own Family. These people are all he has now so him fighting for them is just right.

You know a series is good when a freaking stance can give more chills than any other flashy combat scene.

I'm sorry Thofinn you have to revisit this side of you, but Papa Askeladd with him even after death, that cliffhanger had me raging, that was like the top moment all season, near tears seeing him take the old stance and Askeladd mentor him once again. Gunna be one heck of a fight. He's taken after his real father, I don't think Snake truly understands Thorfinn, but he's about too.

Anime of the year no other one comes close the pacing the story the voice acting!!and the fights !oh ecstasy!!!

It was the stuck look on everyone’s face when thorfinn dodged the attack… even the old man was stunned 😂👌

The music playing in this scene was the same music we heard at the end of the first episode (Thors, Thorfinn and the green lights) when we saw a glimpse of the Jomsvikings making there way to Thors's village which makes me feel it signifies the past rearing its ugly head back into there lives, like the Jomsvikings with Thors, Snake's swings at Thorfinn.

My god the chills that I got when young berserker Thorfinn flashed on the screen with his original dagger stance. I’m glad to see him growing but man do I get nostalgic if his old knife wielding warrior days.

Thorfinn will now fight as his father thor only when absolutely necessary, with just his fists and no fatal damage.

Right here is testament to how far Thorfinn has come. He doesn't want to hurt anyone remembering the horrors of taking lives so easily. But here he understands that it's ok to defend others from aggression in his own way. He doesn't need a dagger or a sword to be a true warrior.

Mappa has done so well animating Vinland saga I hope they animate the Baltic sea war arc

The absence of music combined with the sound effects from 0:17 on gives me chills. That was so well done.

Some will call it giving up, I just call it getting lost in my own revenge.

Snake clutching his sword and activating brain meme to deduce Thorfinn's stance/weapon combo has me rolling and everything about this fight was perfect

This season is brilliant. The whole story is masterfully crafted and keeps it logic of why and how Thorfin becames his own man. It's both horrible and beautiful, both tragic and inspiring. Another work of art from the far East. (Yeah I'm from Europe)

Snake’s sword is from the middle east, possibly Persia or Turkey. Which would also explain his Mediterranean look, dark hair green eyes.
