    Loki as we can see when he is disguised as Odin really just wanted to be loved snd appreciated and accepted. He had Asgard watch a play and celebrate his death which he felt he needed. His rule as Odin wasn't malicious it was decadent. Everyone on Asgard was living in opulent bliss. Loki had Asgard leave control of the 9 realms as Thor mentions to him that their enemies gather to attack. He when he was in rule chose to not have war and give Thor distance and freedom to travel as needed. When Loki comes back and says "your savior is here", we see he does want to be seen as a hero to Asgard. Even the attack on New York was him like Hela trying to make Odin proud. Become a conqueror. Like Odin had. He was even willing to commit genocide of his people, ice Giants to make his adoptive father Odin proud.

    I think its possible that Odin was reformed enough to be an ok father to Thor and Loki. He wasnt totally irredeemable. I mean, if Loki is forgiven for the deaths of hundreds of people in a couple of years we have to accept the possibility that Odin changed over several thousand. Im sure Odin started an empire but like Hala said her power outstripped his own. She seemed much more cruel and power hungry. And yes he created her but you could blame Thor for creating Loki's resentment. I guess Im just saying Odin turned toward benevolence and that led to some good

  • @bloodymares

    @bloodymares

    Жыл бұрын

    He did in fact reform if you pay attention to the first movie. It was the second movie that really screwed Odin's character over and made him act like a self-serving childish idiot, disregarding decades of character development that apparently happened. Ragnarok was true to the first movie and portrayed a humble Odin. It's easy to forget about Odin's character in the first movie especially if you have a bias.

  • @terminatrix92

    @terminatrix92

    Жыл бұрын

    @@bloodymares how did Odin reform in the first movie? At that stage he had created an empire, changed its purpose towards benevolence (by wiping the population’s memory of said bloody conquest) and then acted with benevolence going forward. It doesn’t change what Odin did to create his kingdom… if anything Thor 2 was the only film where Odin acted human; he wants revenge after an ancient race murders his wife. It’s not rational but at least relatable. I like Odin as an extremely flawed God. I don’t know if that’s good writing but it works

  • @bloodymares

    @bloodymares

    Жыл бұрын

    @@terminatrix92 The good writing needs to be consistent with previous work, meaning Thor 1. In that movie Odin never showed any signs of being a manipulative or evil parent, just that he made a lot of mistakes in his life that he had to live with, he just wanted his kids to do better and not tread the same destructive path. In Dark World Odin acts like an arrogant childish a-hole even before Frigga died, so it wasn't motivated by revenge. He also demonstrated disdain towards mortals (Jane) which doesn't really work with the fist movie's plot. If he really thought of humans as beneath the gods, he wouldn't banish Thor to learn humility from them and he wouldn't send Mjolnir to Midgard, where a worthy human could have lifted the hammer and received Thor's powers. So it's not that "Odin is shows as human", he was written in a way that completely ignores the first movie.

  • @terminatrix92

    @terminatrix92

    Жыл бұрын

    @@bloodymares I’m not sure it ignores the first movie just adds to his conflicting characterisation. Odin saying Jane ‘doesn’t belong in Asgard any more than a goat belongs at a banquet table’ is actually consistent with his belief humans should neither be slaughtered or really protected. In Ragnarok we see that there are essentially two versions of Odin; the benevolent god and the tyrannical ruler. If anything Odin is surprisingly nice in the first film considering what we learn about him in Ragnarok. And wasn’t it manipulative of Odin to place a curse on Thor and banish him to earth? Didn’t he essentially ensure Loki became resentful by telling him he was born to be a king without telling him his origin??

    Thor is not talking to himself...Afterlife exists in the MCU and its highly probable that Odin talked to him from Valhalla!...just like T'Challa and Killmonger saw and spoke to their fathers and Ancestors in Wakandan Ancestral Plane or basically Wakandan Afterlife! What I can also tell you is that all various different Afterlives in the MCU are all connected together!...These Afterlives also varry for different people according to their religion or which God they worship! Just like that, the Egyptian Afterlife is A'aru aka The Field Of Reeds...you will get to know and understand this when you watch Moon Knight!

    Fun fact! In the mythology, both Hella and Fenrir are LOKI'S children! In the comics too! Loki also has another child in the myths: Odin's 8 legged horse! It makes sense that they changed it in the movies, since they are more alien than actual gods in the MCU, while in the comics they really WERE ancient gods, and the stuff from legends tends to have happened. The only sad part is that we may nod get Angela, who in the comics has Hella's MCU story, like the whole secret sister and all. And she does end up becoming the queen of Hell at some point in her comics run, ANGELA: Queen of Hell!

    Hey, Meg and Caleb! You guys skipped over "Spider-Man: Homecoming"! Chronologically or by release order, it should be seen before "Thor: Ragnarok". It's not listed on the Marvel home page because it's distributed by Sony. Just make sure you see it before "Avengers: Infinity War". It takes place two months after "Captain America: Civil War" in 2016. It's best to pair it with "Venom" which takes place in the Sony-verse but you need to be up to date with that franchise as the sequel, "Venom: There Will Be Carnage", partially takes place in the MCU!

    I was skeptical of the shift into a more comedic tone at first but the difference in reception between this and Dark World definitely tells the tale. We don't lose much of the gravitas either; added weight is given to Odin's disciplining of Thor in the first film, fearing that he might become another Hela. Odin in turn has his pedestal shattered, paving the way for Thor to lose his illusions and finally succeed him. Director Taika Waititi earned the right to cast himself as Korg, and Jeff Goldblum is a riot even in the role of a planetary dictator.

    Hela realizes what Odin did to her but perpetuates the abuse due to a need to validate what she views herself as is good by Odin's level of success for her. She realizes Odin was wrong but she was taught to wage war and expand Asgard's reach. She defines that as success since that what Odin taught her. Asgard remaining in peace was when she was imprisoned so of course she clings to the glory days of being Odin's executioner as a way of measuring success in her life

    I love how much you both defend Loki. You really realize how shitty a dad Odin is in this film. Hela was his first born and he used her to wage war and then on a whim he chose to be "benevolent" and then imprisons her just like he almost did to Loki. Sent the Valkyrie to die imprisoning her rather than talk to snd discipline his daughter himself. Then he traumatized Loki who was adopted and if not for falling in love with Jane Thor could've becomes warlord on Earth easily

  • @Alewaxon

    @Alewaxon

    OK, you exponentially took things farther and farther down the "let's assume the worst possible interpretation" rabbit hole as you comment went on... Odin did not traumatized Loki, there has never been a mention of abuse, neither physical or phycological and much less in an intentional way from Odin... Odin only imprisoned Loki AFTER Loki waged a war that almost destroyed an entire planet, I don't know what people expected from Odin? A slap on the wrist and a "don't do it again"?... Also it was made pretty clear, by the canon in the MCU and what has been said outside of it; that the idea that Odin is this secretly bad person that would've "made Thor his warlord on Earth easily" it's just plain stupid... After Odin decided to change his ways, it wasn't just performative BS or half measures; for thousands of years Odin has been the protector of a big chunk of the universe and it's people, it is even said that the fear of Odin as a guardian of the cosmos keep Thanos from going after the stones earlier I understand the inclination to defend your fav character, I get it, I like Loki... But don't go sooo out of the realm of reason to excuse his actions and to make others seem worse to make Loki shine by comparison... The reality is that, even at this point, Loki IS STILL an antagonist and a BAD PERSON; at the end of the movie we have a huge shift in mentality and an acknowledgment of his wrong doings and to try to be better, but he is still a terrible brother to Thor, who loved him; he was a terrible son to Odin, yes to him, and to Frigga most of all who offered him nothing but love and a terrible "prince" to Asgard, because it doesn't matter what he says, the reality is that Asgard considered him and gave him the status of a prince... Loki was the one who fucked all that up... And all of this gets confirmed and reiterated in his, lets say, future appearances... "I betrayed the people that offered me nothing but love", that isn't just a throw away line.

    @@Alewaxon I respectfully disagree. 1) Odin did traumatized Loki. He kidnapped him from a temple as a baby and wanted to use him as a peace offering to maintain peace. Like a "stolen relic" as Loki describes. He lied to Loki and raised him to feel he was born to be a king and fair competition with Thor when we know Odin wouldn't choose Loki unless politics demanded it. He was Thor's understudy and as such born to serve never to rule. Odin only said Loki was born to be king because Loki was Laufey's son. Born to rule Johentenhiem, sorry I might've misspelled that. He never told Loki the truth and raised him to be a warrior prince. He then told Loki manipulatively that his birthright was to die ergo meaning Loki has no purpose other than what Odin assigned him. He is nothing. His only birth right to claim is death and everything he has Odin assigns to him. Again like a stolen relic with no purpose but to be Thor's understudy and be Odin's tool when needed. Loki waged war against Asgard's enemy and successfully killed Laufey and his soldiers as well as won war over Johentenhiem. Again sorry for mispelling. Then Loki waged war on Earth. We know Loki wasn't going to destroy earth nor would the Chitari. They wanted to colonize Earth. Rule over it "as a benevolent god" as Odin had. So hypocritical to punish Loki for doing what Odin had done. Also forever in prison isn't comparable to the invasion of Earth when Odin himself had Thor invade and subjugate the planet in the dark world. Thor gets celebrated for colonizing that planted and fighting rebels but Loki gets forever in prison for the same thing but of Midgard? Thor started a possibly bloody war with ice giants. Gets exiled. Thor killed ice giants like Loki killed earthlings. Idk maybe raising Loki to understand right and wrong like a good father and discipling his child would've been better than sweeping him under the rug like with Hela and giving him prison time for thousands of years since they live so long. I expect Odin to rehabilitate Loki not just punish him forever. I'm only looking at mcu Odin not outside of the mcu like mythology or comics as those are different. In the mcu only, when is it said Odin keeps the peace? Aliens and gods aren't afraid of Odin. Or if they are they operate underneath his nose. Odin didn't care about Midgard. He views human lives as equal to how humans would view goats as livestock or pets not as equals. He didn't defend Earth. Thor is the one that cared about Earth and it's people's. Odin was a conqueror with Hela as his executioner in his bloody war to colonize and upkeep Asgard. He took the power source of joutenhiem and Laufey's only child. The other realms wanted to break away from Asgard rule or had separatetist rebels. Odin didn't protect them from outside forces. I learned to like Loki a lot but he isn't my fav character. Thor is. Wanda is. Zemo is. Bucky is.tchalla is. Clint is. Loki is up there though right below but next to killmonger. I'm not excusing Loki's actions just holding Odin accountable for his actions in regards to his kids all turning out as genocidal blood thirsty conquerors. Odin got lucky Thor learned his less on and humbled. At this point at the end of Ragnarok Loki isn't an antagonist or a bad person. He is a morally grey character that has done bad and some good and tries to do good. He was an antagonist in his past. He was terrible to those he loved like his brother Thor but at the end of Ragnarok he isn't still like that. He has changed, a character arc. He is standing beside his brother in the flesh, not an illusion supporting his brother as king by the end of the film a hero of Asgard. Odin admits himself he failed his sons. Odin didn't "only" offer love to Loki. Odin is a terrible father in the mcu. But he does love his sons. He did want to raise them with the knowledge he learned but was far from perfect and manipulated all his kids. Thx for reading my Ted talk lol
