Ragnarok's only problem is it had those 1 or 2 cringe, silly humour (Taika Waititi's specialty) that should have been cut, the humour that Love and Thunder was utterly, utterly saturated with and ruined. You can tell the MCU was on top form with Ragnarok and actually reigned him in to make a brilliant movie, unlike Love and Thunder where they've totally lost their way and let him run it into the ground.

This movie also brought to light (not that there wasn’t reporting on it before but not to this scale) how awful Marvel is to their VFX team. It’s absolutely terrifying that as an aspiring VFX artist, the biggest name to work for won’t treat you with an ounce of respect nor give you proper time to do the work. The VFX has been consistently bad in these movies because it feels like Marvel doesn’t know that creating good VFX takes an absurd amount of time, and you can’t just push unreasonable deadlines and expect it to end up well. AND the fact that Taika made fun of the visual effects is just sad, imagine working tirelessly on that and seeing the director make fun of it. Now I just feel horrible seeing a new marvel movie knowing that I’m supporting something rotten.

The hardest thing for me is that 3 very heavy, powerful themes were clearly teased and available for exploration- with 3 phenomenal actors- and went totally underdeveloped. If gods are good why do bad things happen: Gorr/Bale Immortality and the loss that comes with it: Thor/Hemsworth Righteousness even in the face of death: Jane/Portman They had all these moments where I was like: Can we linger here? Yet instead, 10 seconds in Korg interrupts with some narration or commentary on what it means on a surface level.

Thor Ragnarok worked because it knew the darker scenes needed a bit of levity in order to not be melodramatic, thats what the issue with the first two Thor movies was. But Ragnarok also knew when to slow down on the jokes and tell the story seriously. Love and Thunder was just 2 hours of the same lame jokes with only a hint of dramatic story telling in it. It focused more on being an Adam Sandler comedy than a glamrock space oddessy. If it was me I would have leaned fully into the 80's era camp that was advertised.

Right? You know how Ragnarok mostly absolutely nailed it but got the odd bit of bathos? Like Thor lamenting over Asgard's ruin and then stupid Korg has to come in with a silly comment to ruin the atmosphere? And even most Ragnarok lovers (myself included) hated that silly joke for ruining the moment? This movie is literally that for 2 hours straight. Korg is a retard and ruins every moment he's in (like when they literally disrespect the Warriors 3 by calling them 'literal who's) and the rest of the movie is just goofy, kiddie cringe humour, all at the expense of Thor as a character and throws any development for him out the window right next to how he should have become King like in the comics instead of giving it to 'King' Valkryie the enslaver.

I feel like everyone is crazy, Love And Thunder is one of the most unique and best entries in the MCU and we need more films like it (GOTG2 is very much in the same vein). I believe that Shang Chi was the last genuinely enjoyable marvel film. Like, you can take your friends who have no idea about the MCU to watch it and you'll all have a good time. Plus it had actual personality and clear messages it wanted to portray, from director that clearly felt PASSION for the film he was making. I didn't finish Black Widow and it came wayyy to late. Doctor Strange MOM was a gamble that, although fun, was poorly written and has convinced MCU fans that doing any sort of experimentation with the Marvel formula will 'ruin' the movie. The shows are mostly tedious and primarily serve to build up story arcs for more movies. And the characters are becoming less and less grounded, something that made Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye etc. such likable characters as they were heroes but also just normal dudes at their core. A cocky philanthropist, an everyman, and a father. The MCU has gotten too big for its boots. Everything MUST lead to some massive arc; there's no contained stories anymore, and it sucks because people are eating it up and fuelling this idea that Disney must prioritise quantity over quality.

To me, its not bad the same way Thor: The Dark World is bad. I found this movie entertaining but it definitely felt unfocused. I almost think this would have worked if the movie were like half an hour longer. Or at least give this a second draft and really cut down the fat and give certain parts of this more focus. I think Ragnarok worked because there was a difinitive plot and story beats but the humor was put in appropriately. This one seemed like they said "Lets make a fun and silly Thor movie" which is what they did, but at the cost of the storytelling. The opening of the movie and everything with Gor was amazing. But shoving in Jane and Mjolnir felt like too much and either should have been cut or honestly given its own show. I think a Jane Foster/Mighty Thor Show would have been great. There could have been great character work there and really delve into the character and what it means to be Thor. But it was a too much too fast to establish all of that in this one movie. And the whole "thor is a dad now" just doesnt feel earned at all. And now this movie and Multiverse of Madness introducing super powerful things that can grant you anything you want/need. Im just like "well why didnt they do that before?" Or "Why didnt Thanos try to find Eternity intead of hunting for the stones. This seemed way easier and much less deadly to achieve your goal" Its seems like marvel is diposing any comic book thing they they have definitively decided they just cant be bothered to deal with so that super nerds cant say "Well why didnt they..." because its gone now, thats their answer. We cant use Eternity or the book of Vishanti because they are gone. No more time travel, no more miracles. Which i can understand why they're doing that, but it just seems a bit...lazy? The movie is entertaining but overall its just messy. Its not that it's bad, its more like there was a lot of missed potential in this. Which i think is why its causing this kind of reaction from fans

Not only do I have even more trouble getting into the MCU because of its sudden content explosion on top of its growing pains, but unfortunately I am tiring of Taika Waititi. It’s great that he’s welding some of his clout to get New Zealand and Indigenous projects off the ground, but he seems more interested in being a figurehead or a brand than an actual director now. It always feels a little weird to me when someone like Jon Favreau or Lin Manuel seem to stick their finger in every pot at Disney suddenly, but with such a unique and singular voice like Waititi it feels especially jarring. I hope he comes back down to earth soon.

The main problem was that the director tried to tell 2 long different stories in 1 short movie. Thor vs Gorr should have been it's own movie and the same applies to Jane Foster. Gorr barely appeared on the screen, wasn't developed enough to feel like a real threat. You can replace Gorr with that Elf villain from Thor 2 and the story would have been the same. It wasn't Christian Bale's fault, but that of the script writer. In this movie Gorr is a forgetable villain. Jane Foster deserved a movie of her own. There should have been more focus on her struggle to fight cancer while also trying to protect the world from villains. I think these 2 stories don't mix well together, because you can't fully develope one without taking the center stage from the other. What we got was a half-baked compromise which fails to deliver a memorable villain and it's serious moments are compromised by childish humor. I am not against comedy, I even enjoyed some of the jokes, but they remove any sense of danger from the villain's part and they take from the time which could have been used to improve the plot. I'm tired of this depressed Thor who is constantly dealt bad hands. This guy went through so many emotional crisis by this point (all his family dead, his home destroyed, his friends either died or left him and his ex girlfriend had cancer). Why does Marvel hate Thor so much? Will we ever see a movie where he tackles his issues head on without everything being turned into a joke? Will we see Thor take responsibility and lead his people like the hero his father wanted him to be? Not in the MCU, that's for sure!

i agree w everything said in the video, but one of the biggest issues for me was that the movie never really states why Gorr is in the wrong. it feels lazy to make audiences root against him simply bc he's fighting Thor. i think this would've been a really great exploration of divine apathy and the moral greyness of a character like Gorr too bad it's the mcu :/

i think the main thing that could really make marvel movies more interesting is to have more overarching movie plots. thor love and thunder really could’ve used a part 2 so they could expand upon these characters more carefully, especially jane and gorr (jane because she could’ve been way cooler, gorr because he was so cool and i want more). i think marvel is scared to do this and i don’t know why, last time they did they raked in billions with infinity war and endgame. they should really be doing it across these smaller stories as well, having an overarching villain in multiple stories rather than a bunch of movies with different villains that come and go in 2 hours. this would make it feel more connected as well as give the opportunity for more fleshed out characters and plots

This is pretty much why if the future Marvel slate, Black Panther Wakanda Forever, Blade & F4 are the only things I’m interested in putting effort towards seeing. F4 & Blade intrigue by simply having a status as giant question marks with lots of potential. BP2 on the other hand has my attention not just due to my thoughts that Coogler genuinely understands BP & the various themes & elements of its source material at & beyond the level of standouts like Iron Man & Incredible Hulk (2008) but also the trailer makes it seem like one of the few mainline Marvel projects with some genuine pathos, drama & emotionality at its core; attributes that stuff MCU movies have been too bereft of since Infinity War.

I think one of the problems is that Waititi was editing this movie while starring in a tv series (Our Flag Means Death, which is fantastic btw) and now I keep hearing about all of these projects he's developing all at once with different levels of involvement. I'm worried his work, which I love is going to suffer because he's got too many pots on the boil. I love that he is exec producing a lot and has led to some of my favorite shows like What We Do in the Shadows and Rez Dogs. I get that he wants to get as many projects off the ground with his newfound Hollywood success but I'm just worried he will become a parody of himself like Tim Burton

This dumpster fire is almost as bad as Eternals and that’s saying something. It’s so bizarre and tonally inconsistent; the way it cuts between those insane “comedy” scenes and Jane foster dying of cancer or kids being psychologically tormented in a space cage is truly deranged. Although I think the worst thing is that the God Butcher is so under-utilised. We barely even see him…slay gods? Just one among the many baffling cinematic choices made here.

In the future, it's just going to be a movie filled with Groot, Korg, and I dunno, maybe Spiderman just beating a stuffed horse with x's for eyes and making really awful jokes or their signature taglines while groot winks at the camera and says "I am Groot" and then he actually starts talking in English because now we gotta turn him into a joke character. You can't focus an entire story around sidekick/mascot characters. That way lies the Minionification.

Haven't watch this video in full but here are what I gathered myself: • Tonal incosistencies: You could even see this by the art design and sets. Whenever the setting is focused on Gorr, they appear bolder. The rest movie of the movie looks cheap (in some scenes, the cheap look is intentional but there still should've been balance). And I'm just talking of the set, not the screenwriting! • Plot points and characters that didn't serve the story, plot holes and botched arcs: Why is Zeus here? For his thunderbolt. And what does it do? Almost nothing. Gorr's entire quest also made no sense. • Executive meddling: I think this is where the problem is truly rooted, and it's already on the rest of Phase 4. As said of Zeus, the useless characters and plot points are only there as set-up for future movies. And with Zeus specifically, this is confirmed just by mid-credit scene.

This was a 6.5/10 for me. There's a few things that are great about it, but so many things that just fall flat. Its not the worst Thor movie but far from the best. Taika doubled down on the humor instead of focusing on storytelling. I know that's his strength and its certainly evident in Wilderpeople, JoJo, and even Ragnarok. But I felt it was more or less balanced in the previous entry, whereas here its much too prevalent and the worst offense, is that ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY. So much of that energy and time could've been put into Jane or Gorr's character. I echo what one poster below said, where they felt like Jane could've gotten a mini series prior to this to establish where she was at post-TDW and leading up to this film. I would've been down for that. That being said, I was satisfied with her arc here (as under baked as it was), as well as her ending/send off. Gorr should've gotten more scenes to establish how menacing of a threat he was. And it should've been a race against the clock to stop Gorr from finding Eternity while he's killing god after god for information.

Shang-Chi and Spider-Man No Way Home are the only movies in Phase 4 to actually live up standards that were left after Endgame. Like Black Window, Dr. Strange 2 and Eternals definitely could’ve been so much more than what it actually is. Thor: Love and Thunder had a great cast, great villain from the comics and a good trailer. This movie had so much potential and it’s just disappointing.
