Think of this 1995 conversation in the context of 2023. What are both sides saying, what were the results? Society certainly went in the direction of Ben Wattenberg's vision. Fast forward nearly 30 years ...........We have 1-2 generations of people with useless degree's, crippled with student debt working jobs that don't require a degree to do. Why? Because they were told their whole lives that getting a degree in anything will propel them into success. In reality, only a select few degree's that are extremely hard to get are worth getting. Medicine, Engineering, Accounting, ect.

You should check out TS book Vision of the Annointed. He literally does case studies of various government programs, what was said by both sides, and the ultimate outcome. Laid out similar to your comment and very informative.

College? We often find the "A" student working for the "B" student and many dropouts own the business. About half my time spent in a 1930s-style brick-and-mortar classroom was wasted. Note: My education is mostly informal (I have a GED) and I can hold my own in nearly any circle.

Like Milton Friedman and unlike so many others Thomas Sowell clips hold up thirty years or so later. It occurs to me that the 60s reforms that didn't involve spending money - voting rights, fair housing etc - worked. The programs that involved throwing vast sums of taxpayer money around largely failed.

But the politicians who "threw vast sums of taxpayer money" at this didn't care. Their job in doing so was to get reelected and further the causes of the Democratic party.

Some 'societal problems' are extremely resistant to funding, but that's because such aren't really 'problems' at all... they are just emergent aspects of humanity/human nature.

The lack of insight of Ben Wattenberg astounds me. He used to work as a speech writer in DC and he is about the level of average American politics: ignorant.

Overall poverty doesn't matter. Same math tricks with unemployment. Your eyes aren't lying.. look at automotive assembly lines in the 1980s.. verses now. Automation is half the GDP (your jobs)

Society should be structured so that every citizen is afforded the basics of human survival for free. From that social safety net the individual can go out into society and contribute in the best way they can. They can either live with what they are given for free and volunteer in society or they can have more life comforts by working and earning the money for those extra life comforts.

@@30minutesLess can you not read I said ‘should’ I didn’t say it that it is happening right now. Many different societies have different ways of supporting their citizens and I’m proposing at least a bare minimum ideal that Gov should strive to achieve when setting social policies that encourages individuals to take risks to better themselves or help others without fear of falling through the social safety net.

COL-LEGE (kol'ij), n. [L. collegium, community, society, guild, fraternity 1. a for profit business that produces very expensive tickets to idyllic destinations like: the middle class. 2. An additional 4 years of social indoctrination towards managerial feudalism, economic terrorism, elitism, and especially bean-bag throwing which is taught to corpo-sapiens at an early age to strengthen their tossin muscles for the future custom of 'dwarf tossing', a despicable act reserved for only the high priests of Wall Street.
