Thomas Mapfumo - Mhondoro

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Thomas Mapfumo (born 1945) is a Zimbabwean musician known as "The Lion of Zimbabwe" and "Mukanya" for his immense popularity and for the political influence he wields through his music, including his sharp criticism of the government of President Robert Mugabe. He both created and made popular Chimurenga music and his slow-moving style and distinctive voice is instantly recognisable to Zimbabweans.
Mapfumo was imprisoned without charges under the white-dominated regime of Rhodesia. He now lives in exile in the United States, and although he has occasionally returned to Zimbabwe he has not returned since 2005.
Just the fact that he was drawing on the native musical tradition and singing in his native language was a political statement. Rhodesia was ruled by a minority of white individuals who derogated the native black population and culture. But more than that, his lyrics became overtly political, supporting the revolution that was developing in the rural areas, what Mapfumo calls "the communal lands". He called his new style of music Chimurenga. In Shona it means "struggle".
Mapfumo released the album Corruption in 1989. It criticised Mugabe and his government, with which Mapfumo was becoming more and more disillusioned. Mugabe wasn't happy with Mapfumo, either, and Mapfumo became the target of government harassment.

This great artist worked tirelessly over the years and he gave a voice to the voiceless. Song and dance were a form of weapon to fight the war of liberation. Thomas fought hard to make sure that Zimbabwe attains independence. The post independence period was fertile ground for Mukanya to execute his exploits. Social and economic ills like corruption manifested in the new government. Thomas never vacillate, he stood with the poor.

These are folk songs, just like, for example, the early Bob Dylan would use the traditional folk music and put his own lyrics or even do the traditional song. That's the same. Bundu Boys used the same traditional chords as Mukanya. So the sound is the same, just as its cultural connotations.

  • @PaloSant

Mhondoro spirits are royal ancestral spirits of deceased chiefs and kings or any other royals. They deal with matters of a clan as a whole not just individual families like your usual ancestors. They deal with issues that affect districts as a whole and the whole nation hence they are also referred to as Supra tribal spirits. The local traditional chiefs/ chieftaincies consult their local Mhondoros for guidance on matters affecting their territories and different rituals that need to be performed. Lions are symbolised by Mhondoros so sometimes Lions are sometimes referred to as Mhondoros. The song talks about how Zimbabwe is a land of Mhondoro who led the liberation war fighters when they fought and won the war of independence from Britain and calls upon the nation to come and witness the great works of the mhondoro spirits.
