The answers to the practice questions are below. Just click on "Read more". Be sure to leave a comment and let me know what you thought of the video! I Thanks for watching and considering subscribing. Question 1: A Malthusian catastrophe would happen when the population exceed the carrying capacity. Malthus believed that we would reach a point where we would not longer be able to feed all of the people in society. (Population growth is exponential and food production grows arithmetically, according to Malthus) Question 2: Neo-Malthusians are modern day Malthus supporters with a twist. They believe in Malthusian theory but believe instead of it being a scarcity of food as the underlining problem, it is the worlds natural resources. Malthus predicted that we would experience a Malthusian crisis when population growth out paced our food production, Neo-Malthusians believe population growth will exceed the earths ability to the growing population Question 3: Malthus was criticized for being an alarmist and being anti-family. Today we can see how thanks to the agricultural revolutions food production does not grow arithmetically, we have become more efficient thus allowing for more food production. We also do not see population growth continue to grow exponentially, due to increased economic development, urbanization, women empowerment, and more. Question 4: Malthus created his theory during stage 2 of the demographic transition model, this was a time of massive population growth. Malthus did not realize that eventually society would transition into stage 3 and 4. Which would end up decreasing societies population growth. Malthusian theory only works if countries do not advance furtherer into the demographic transition model, if countries stay stuck in stage 2 then we will continue to see a rapidly growing population.

1: The Malthusian Catastrophe states that population is exponential whilst resources are arithmetic (i.e. it is not certain that you will yield a harvest each year which will grow in time with the population) and for that reason at a certain point the food output will not manage the human output and because of that you have, as the video states, a proposed landscape of famine, fear, disease, war, etc. 2: Neo-Malthusians branch off into particular awareness of non-renewable resources and for that reason bring to light that the more children are raised, the higher the demand, and ultimately that will mean there will be no more non-renewable resources, thereby putting us in a pretty bad situation until we manage to bring more green and renewable energy sources into the common peoples homes. 3: One criticism is that population is now showing evidence of waning, caused by such things as the average household earnings going up (and more money in a home also means that there's a higher chance for less children) and women become educated, which, statistically, means that they will marry less, which, statistically, means that they will have less children, which stops the proposed issue of overpopulation. Also remember that farmers are now equipped to water and raise farms on scales which Thomas would never have imagined. Both of these things, that there are less people born, and that food is become more plentiful as agricultural abilities increase, make the Malthusian Catastrophe not as likely. 4: As the CBR went up while Thomas while alive and food did increase but not on a scale which could match the population increase, there is no question on the subject of how he came up with the idea. The short intercept where all people can be fed is the perfect moment; and yet more babies are brought into the world. So that is how it shaped the Malthusian theory. Did I get them right? For the first three I'm fairly confident but for the last one I wasn't sure whether the mentioned demographic was the one which he would have had access to or the more modern, updated one, so I guessed you would be interested in the original graph.

The beauty of understanding Malthusian Collapse Theory, is understanding that at its core, it is about exponential growth in a finite environment. This concept can be applied to any closed system.

As for me, taking both sides for the neo-Malthusians and Malthusians theory would be better. We need to control the population growth at a moderate rate which is sustainable by the earth's resources and avoid impulsive use of available resources which will lead to their scarcity. Also, we ought to recycle used resources to regenerate their value and promote conservation of the available resources in order to promote a steady population size over a long period of time.

In 1798, Malthus wrote a “theory on the nature of poverty,” and he “called for population control by moral restraint." He stated that charity encouraged “generation-to-generation poverty and simply made no sense in the natural scheme of human progress.” Sounds like a great guy...

I think Malthus was only of the earliest one to realize the nature of growth and its consequences. Our universe may be infinite. But exponential growth is physically unsustainable. The outcome isn't the cessation of human population. The outcome is rather smaller periods of growth followed by a longer period of stagnation. This is how European colonialists found India, China and Middle East when they came to colonize. Now with the globalization in full swing, we might hit a global stagnation.
