    I meditate on this when I'm walking around, feeling depressed. It brings me so much comfort. I've memorized it now.

    Nobody is Anybody by Thomas Ligotti Those of us who reside in the Unholy City, who sprouted out of the blackness of an old root cellar, or sprayed forth like dark ashes from an unclean chimney, Those of us who are permanent citizens of the Unholy city, are neither Angeles nor Demons Although we are sometimes called upon to play such parts,

    Still there is one respect, in which we, the inhabitants of the Unholy City, diverge from all others in this world, who are so caught up in the game that is going on, who identify so completely with the roles they have been given in the stage-show universe, that they actually believe themselves to be somebody or something. We on the other hand, suffer from no such delusion We are nobodies. We are nothings To even speak in such terms is to claim to much for ourselves.

    There used to be a music video featuring this track, which showed footage of a cremation ... I wish I could still find it; I think the channel was taken down unfortunately. Great song, powerful words.

    These are great, thanks for posting. I Ligotti's choice of music works well; nice juxtaposition with his prose. He is definitely the heir to Lovecraft.

    @Jackal312 The background music is a collaboration between Thomas Ligotti and David Tibet from the Neofolk group Current 93. Ligotti felt it was appropriate.

    @emptycleartree Ligotti has collaborated with the musical group Current 93 on the albums In A Foreign Town, In A Foreign Land (1997, reissued 2002), I Have a Special Plan for This World (2000) and This Degenerate Little Town (2001) all released on David Tibet's Durtro label. Tibet has also published several limited editions of Ligotti's books on Durtro Press. Says Wiki, and David Tibet's own site.

    @pelodelperro Wow, thanks for posting this! I just heard the first few lines yesterday and turned it off right away because it was like being told some kind of forbidden secret. His stories have given me my own imagined version of his voice which is a haunting one. Don't know if I want to listen to his actual voice yet for fear that something might be lost. Hard to explain but maybe you know what I mean. Anyway, out of curiosity do you know if there are any recorded interviews with him?

  • @heidirh
    @heidirh12 жыл бұрын

    @duskboy02 I know what you mean. Ligotti's writing is so dark, stark, & fantastically weird that it is jarring to find that his actual voice is so mundane-sounding.... Ultimately, though, I like his voice for its quality of no-frills honesty -- though it might be more aesthetically pleasing if it were deeper: a basso profondo even.

    for the purpose of some game that has been going on since the world has began, acting out our roles in a drawn out, intricate stage show that we will never understand, or ever care to understand. Nevertheless, we are really not so different from the tourists who sometimes visit our little town, and sometimes stay with us forever. Who are also born of the same blackness that we were, as everything was.

    @emptycleartree The music & words are copyrighted by Thomas Ligotti -- this suggests to me that he wrote both. The CD on which "The Unholy City" appears was released by Durtro as an accompaniment to "Crampton," a screenplay written by Ligotti & Brandon Trenz.
