    Old-time fighters with rarely hit the bag more than four rounds too much heavy bag will ruin your timing. Also, if a bag is too heavy, it takes the snap out of your punches.

    Too much medium-hard sparring isnt good for long term health, and back to those era, they didnt spar using 16oz gloves.

    Tommy Hearns is my favorite boxer, he may not have a good chin but he could certainly knock people out. My son shares his birthday, I should of called my son after him but forgot in all of the excitement.

    Stop it!! He just was smarter and worked harder then everybody else. Tommy had some good genes but he couldn't take a punch to save his life. Dont diminish his intellect and hard work.

    This attitude also explains Toney's various health issues. Sparring should never replace road work.

    Headgear does not protect your brain cells. Building endurance and learning proper boxing skills will. Toney was simply being lazy.@@mditt7

    my old man was a top pro welterweight here in Australia during the 40s and 50s. He said that a lot of guys only sparred for training and nothing else. Also, the referees and corners used to let fights go for far too long when a fighter was helpless on the ropes. There would be old fighter's reunions in the 80s and I would see a lot of these guys, real survivors, but many were considerably brain damaged. My old man was one of the "lucky ones" but he had a drinking problem and suffered mood swings, probably from the vicissitudes of the fight game in that "golden" era.@@vincentfisher1603

    What everyone forgets about Tommy, is he was such a masterful boxer, had he been more conservative in his approach to fights, and not always gone looking for the kayo, he would have been almost unbeatable. He was still able to outpoint a fantastic, slick champion, in Virgill Hill, years past his prime...

    And these are a large part of the reason Tommy suffers from brain damage today.... while ray, with his damage limiting training methods seems to be in perfect health...sad but true

    Ray was the biggest “dancer” out of the bunch (talking about the 4 kings) he was the hit and don’t get hit guy, the other 3 were dogs.

    Wow 5 weight divisions. First championship to last belt held, what percentage of weight from one to the next? He was fun to watch too. A cool cat. I still occasionally watch his amateur bout against Pryor. He was always scrappy. 🥊

    The old school trainers understood that less is more. Guys like Louis, Charles, and Robinson would spar daily, but didn't usually go more than 6 rounds per session

    I think it had to do with to much head trauma. Over sparring and never healing prior to fight cost him his chin.

    Obviously that training regimen worked for Tommy in his career, but it makes you wonder if all that sparring caused unnecessary head trauma. If you watch the Mike Tyson podcast episode with both Ray and Tommy, it's clear to see who suffering more from CTE between the 2 fighters.

    Don't let this video fool you he hit the bag, jumped roped, hit the pads, etc. I was there to witness it my self at Kronk. The all out hard sparring day in and day out is what most likely causes the unnecessary trauma to many fighters.

    you can do alot of sparring but its,how you spar if its war after war then your in trouble but light sparring just the jab things like that go long way

    Tommy is so great. I don’t think it matter who trained him. His fighting spirit would have gotten him where he was manual Stewart had no concept of defense.

    Yes. When Iran beat Tommy for the Middleweight title, his friend Davey had just been killed in a freak accident. Davey's death motivated Iran to another level.

    Tommy was tall and may have struggled jumping rope. Also, if he’d have hit a heavy bag with any regularity, with his punching power, I’m sure he’d have damaged his hands, wrists or shoulders! 😮

    honestly, sparring too much can cause a lot of long term damage to the brain. This is why you'll see the Hearns has been showing signs of brain damage while leonard looks fresh

    Leonard has still a clear speech, whereas Hearns has been suffering from slurred speech for decades. Muhammad Ali, James Toney... Two boxers that did a lot of sparring too, have been suffering from brain damage as well. So you draw your own conclusions.

    Great fighter but the form on his pushups is terrible (flared elbows) and the situps are a spine-wrecking waste of time.. I wouldn't say this to his face ;-)
