When I met Thomas on this tour, I told him I felt he was one of the most severely underrated artists of the last 25 years. He smiled and said "oh, I think I'm rated just to my liking, thanks." I was so embarrassed. Very nice man, though.

when that moog bass kicks in at the beginning, i get an instant woody.

This one really has that sound of cramped, metallic-smelling areas lit by a blinking, harsh orange light. those deep synths in the background cover the whole tune in deep, deep water, the other ones going past like strange, brightly-colored fish, going down.. then slowly surfacing to show all that ocean, endless, indifferent, roiling

When an artist sounds better live than in studio you have an amazing gem. Jaw-dropping awesome.

I've known this song when it first came out in the 80's so by an amazing coincidence I read an article about his uncle's submarine last week. HMS Thetis sank in 1939 as a result of a fault with the torpedo tubes - only 4 crew escaping with the 99 remaining succumbing to carbon dioxide poisoning. the submarine was later raised and renamed HMS Thunderbolt to be sunk, this time for good, by an Italian warship in the Mediterranean with all hands. RIP Uncle Steve and all who died in the submarine.

@@1w598 You slightly misunderstood filupe01's reply. Stephen was not one of those who died in 1939 of carbon dioxide. He died when it was lost for good. The sub sailed from Malta on 23 December 1942. She was sunk on 25 December 1942 in the Gulf of Tunis in position 37º15'N, 10º30'E by depth charges of Italian torpedo boats Ardente and Ardito north-west of Zembra Island. She was attacking an Italian convoy making for Tunis. HMS P 48 was declared overdue on 5 January 1943.

People laugh at me when I tell them I'm a big Thomas Dolby fan because they know him only from "She Blinded Me With Science" which, despite its notoriety, is really quite a good tune. But nonetheless, I just smile back at them and pity the fact they know about none of these songs, the others from the Golden Age Of Wireless, and his other albums. He just puts together great music.

I am so grateful to have TD explain this song at the beginning. I always wondered about it. I'm surprised it was so personal and so true to life. Great song, and brilliant remix! Very haunting.

Agreed, Cosmoline. Mr. Dolby is one of my musical heroes, along with Trent Reznor of NIN fame, as far as being a "solo" artist that composes most of his own stuff, and manages to play it fairly well.

Dolby and Reznor are my 2 favorites also. Isn't it incredible how they both got their individual experiences on stage with their hero David Bowie as well? Have you already seen or heard Gate to the Mind's Eye? That was Dolby doing things I never thought I'd be lucky to find on CD or VHS film. 1994 was Gate to the Mind's Eye and I discovered it that summer after buying the first CD ever with my own money in March of that year...The Downward Spiral. After that I became a musician and got very deep into Yes, Rush, Tangerine Dream, Hendrix, Floyd...but NIN and Dolby are my top influences and always will be. Roland Orzabal from Tears for Fears really blew me away on 2001s Tomcats Screaming Outside. That might impress you too since you like single artists in control of the genius work they bring to our ears

Happy 62th birthday Mr. Dolby! You inspired me so much to buy the many synthesizers I still own today. Thank you!!!

Got to see him in on his tour in 1983 and later was privileged to meet him in Arizona in 1988. He's so cool in person too - with a great sense of humor as you might guess!

... There was an exhilarating freedom and sense of adventure that came upon me while listening to Thomas in the eighties. The sound of electronic music, clever lyrics... that drove deep into our hearts. Fond memories... sad memories, happy memories!

A pure Genius..

The point of this tour was to herald a return to music after over a decade as business entrepreneur, the whole purpose was to play the old songs for the fans who had missed him for so long and to warm up again before releasing a new album of new music. The choice to revisit his past was deliberate and welcomed by his fans.

I went to see Thomas's Lighthouse Tour and when he played this it was just awesome. As we were all lined up waiting to go in to see the show I noticed a bald headed figure around 5ft 9in tall walking passed us with his head down and I quickly realised it was Thomas!...nobody else seemed to notice as everybody just kept on talking...I just stood there gazing as he briefly looked up caught me staring and looked down again!...I was absolutely mesmerized, I wanted to stop him but to me who had been a fan for over 30 years felt I was not worthy..this man to me is a God I was just in awe and shock that one of my Idols from childhood had just been a couple of feet away from me and then when I got in to the show I was sat just 10 meters from him...it was a dream and the show was incredible...Thomas is just so humble, I could have sat there all night...will remember for the rest of my life!!!...thankyou Thomas!!!!

John B apologies for the late reply!...Yes truly amazing all round musician who I will always admire and nice to see he is still coming up with new ideas for a show. If you haven't seen the Invisible Lighthouse Tour and you get the opportunity to see it I would totally recommend you won't be disappointed!... I really wanted to ask him a few questions in the Q & A session but at the last second I lost my bottle lol!...oh well!!. Anyway nice to know there is another fan out there who knows what good music is!...Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!..Cheers!.

John B thankyou very much!...I didn't know Thomas had had his bike stolen, that's a great welcome to Baltimore!..lol although every cloud has a silver lining and there seems to be some poetic justice, passing up on taking some valuable bikes and taking instead a bike worth $75 lol.... also this is just the kind of obscure experience that Thomas is able to draw from and transform into an amazing song. .probably making him thousands enabling him to buy whatever bike his heart desires!.. yes I think the thief certainly came off the worst in this case!,,lol; Cheers

Thomas is a genius. Excellent songwriter, as well as being a master of the old stuff before you just bought some stuff from Korg and made up songs on the fly....His songs took hours and hours of programming, synching, etc...when that stuff was not exactly user-friendly. I wouldn't say ANYONE is the best, but Mr. Dolby certainly had a big impact back when it was harder to do so.....he is an innovator in his art and I give him major credit for his role in music.

Oh boy how would I love to watch this exquisite, intriguing and beautiful act in my hometown Rio-Brazil.I'll just keep dreaming!

HE IS A GOD. Saw him perform live on his Sole Inhabitants tour in 2005 - at the historic El Rey Theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico - and he was BRILLIANT - every nano-second of his performance was gorgeous and purposeful. He is wonderful! This long is legendary.

Actually, lot of the songs on this tour were updated with new sounds and rhythms. TD's audience don't dance and move around because we are listening appreciatively to a musical genius; we show our appreciation at the end of each song. We are just a different type of audience (many of us are too old to be moving about that much anyway! ;-) ). Not all music needs to be enjoyed by thrashing around frenetically. The enjoyment of the audience is clearly visible at the end of each song though.

Yes, no dancing...much like Joe Satriani concerts. He doesn't even sing but when the man that was the guitar teacher of Steve Vai and Metallicas Kurt Hammett, u stand there amazed. Joe Satriani needs a band though. Thomas is like "nah, I Don't need a band. I think I'll just do the bass, drums, synthesizer on my own and where a headset microphone to sing hands free". 😅 I hope you're a fan of the score Dolby did to The Gate to the Mind's Eye. Original songs with him singing and one track he sings dark Latin vocals before shouting "Armageddon, child of the revolution, victim of thought pollution, showtime for good and evil". And the beautiful song Valley of the Mind's Eye he opens the song in a French vocal whisper before belting out the first verse in English. Is there anything this guy can't do? I'm a musician/producer, I'm 41 years old, read his book, and still seem to learn something new about him I didn't know before. Lol thanks for reading. Take care

TMDR - genius as always

The funny thing is Soviet sub K-429 sank in shallow water in the summer of 1983. I remember watching the story on the news when this song was popular. The entire crew survived because submarine escape procedures had improved greatly since WWII.

Honestly, "She Blinded Me With Science" is probably the worst song on The Golden Age of Wireless. It's not a terrible song, it's just that every other song on that album are amazing.

wonderful stuff and one of my absolute faves that led me to a life of music. the thought off seeing & hearing tunes like this glammed up to appeal to today's audiences leaves me cold. the fact he is out there doing this again should give us all a thrill and to cheapen the experience by updating the sound would be horrific. vince clarke would never do it either can you imagine yazoo with updated synth sounds and identikit dance beats ? nah niether can he !!

Dolby actually makes his uncle's demise depicted in this song appear more futile and meaningless than it actually was. Where's 'Aliens Ate My Buick'? Maybe I imagined it ...

1) Music never "moves on". Only trends do. 2) I've never cared for remixes. If there's anything that is to have a so-called modern style, it should be in the form of new material. And even then it's up to the artist to decide if they want to jump on the bandwagon, reject it or create their own. Rarely, the third happens. 3) Atmosphere isn't one-dimensional. Believe it or not, some audiences actually go to shows to listen to the music.

Interesting backgrounding from the man Tom revealing the true-life story at the heart of the romantic imagery in the song. BTW: re 'remixing it into a modern style' by which I take it you mean putting loathsome, soulless and overbearing dance beats onto it (from the 'Acme' loops 'n' fills sample library for 'urban' music producers) thus making it sound like countless other tuneless dance music dirges. No thanks. These tracks are from when technology was still used to write SONGS - y'know?

That is a tease of part of this very same song (One of Our Submarines) and you can hear the refrain sung later in the song at 3:11 in this video.

whats with the "meow meow meow meow" synth lead??? haha I love the moog bass but he should have stuck with the original jupiter8 lead sound.

In his own words, he joking attributed his receding hairline to the hair coloring and wild styles he had when he was still an unknown. In other words, he went bald.

He is God , but I am glad they treated him as a doorknob cover.

So horrifying 😰

Haunting and sad... if TD wants to remix his music, why not? I like the orig too, but new interpretations add new dimensions I think.
