Thomas Borchert - Final Lair

Thomas Borchert, Anne Gorner, and Nikolaj A. Brucker in the 'Final Lair' from The Phantom of the Opera, Essen production. A little bit gets cut off at the end.

    I really love the fact that when the Phantom walks behind the throne to get the lasso while singing, he seemingly disappears in the eyes of Christine and Raoul until he reappears and Raoul suddenly has a lasso around his neck, it really adds to the ghostly persona which is what a Phantom is, a ghost...

    Oh, Thomas Borchert! Words cannot express how perfectly you performed that! And, sweet Jesus, that voice! If I'd been Christine, I would have seriously struggled with not changing the script to give the audience a phanficcy ending. (This is assuming after the kiss I would still be conscious, of course.)

    Anne is personally my favorite Christine of them all. She gives her a unique character that you don't really see often, like how she was almost glaring at Erik the Phantom as he approached her and Raoul, and then there is the part at the end where she returns the ring, her expression wow, like she was saying "We really aren't meant for each other, I am truly sorry, Mon Ange... I'm sorry". Thomas Borchert's acting was also superb, particularly how he made Erik sound so hopeful at the end where he saw her coming back with his one "Christine...?!" and then the disappointment and heartbreak when he realized she wasn't. Nikolaj also deserves a round of applause: I don't see many Raouls put so much into their acting, as well as singing, especially when he was hanging from the Punjab Lasso. Bravo, this is officially my favorite German cast of them all :)

    1:51 I don't believe I have heard anyone say the word "guest" better than him! You are just delectable Thomas Borchert! Germany produces so many genius actors, most of my favorite phantoms have come from or at least trained and worked there, like Borchert or Thomas Schulze, Ethan Freeman or Steve Barton or Ian Job Bourg. So many underrated artists that we should be talking more about. I wish Chris Murray would do a phantom also I believe he would give the same mind-bending performance he gave in Jekyll and Hyde. And he has a stunning Music of the Night here on youtube.

    Finally a video of him in Phantom from the actual stage production where he doesn’t hold back 👏🏻. I first discovered Thomas in Count of Monte Cristo and when I first heard I thought “He sounds exactly like a Phantom. He’s the German Ramin Karimloo”. I’ve been looking for a video like this for years and now I finally found one :). Thanks so much

    Oh hell. This was unbelievably good! Ugh, from his insanity to the way Christine actually pulled away from him at the end...he was left hanging. Oh sweet jesus. I don't even care that it's in german. If you were a true Phan, you would understand it. Ugh. Fabulous. Am now suffering from a overdose of unexpected feels :3 Thank you

    Also, I just want to point out that this production actually hid the Phantom before he put the Punjab lasso on Raoul. Adds an extra shock to the audience. Well done!

    In addition to Glass Prism's comment, let's us not forget that the English and German are kind of 'sisters' - it sounds almost natural to hear this in German, let alone the music, the singing and the acting which is amazing.

    Well, generally the people who are interested in this are fans of Thomas Borchert or fans of POTO's foreign productions who are aware that this is in German, so it did not seem necessary. Also, German is one of my favorite languages and I prefer you not call it "gibberish". Have a bit of respect for the foreign productions and languages, please; they don't get enough as it is.

    So true. Thomas is incredible in the role. It is really too bad he didn’t play it longer than he did. As far as someone thinking they are speaking gibberish if you know the play by heart in English it is very easy to follow along in German or any other foreign languages. I love seeing foreign interpretations because you see different portrayals than English Phantoms.

    Why does the Phantom looks so calm at 8:16 and then becomes agitated seconds later.

  • @PrismsofGlass

    @PrismsofGlass

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's up to interpretation, but a possibility is that he's resigned himself to Christine and Raoul leaving (hence the initial calmness - he's probably thinking, "Of course she'll run off as soon as possible, why would anyone choose to stay). But when Christine doesn't (many Christines linger, whether in confusion or pity), he becomes agitated because, well, she's not following his expectations, she's acting like she MIGHT stay and that gives him hope, and he can't have that, and the only way he knows how to react to this is to become more volatile, and to become MORE desperate to chase her out because, again, why would any woman choose to stay with someone like him? Or it's bad acting. Your choice.
