From Wikipedia: How Great Thou Art" is a Christian hymn based on an original Swedish hymn entitled "O Store Gud" written in 1885 by Carl Boberg (1859-1940). The English version of the hymn and its title are a loose translation by the English missionary Stuart K. Hine from 1949.

My daughter described this performance perfectly, "She's singing this like it's her first day in Heaven!" I couldn't have described it any better.

Carrie said she doesn't remember the last minute of this performance, she was filled with the Holy spirit.

When people are talking about the greatest voices in all of music, you can't overlook Carrie Underwood. Her range, her tone, her power, and her breath control are beyond unbelievable. You definitely need to react to ALOT more from her!! She's truly a God gifted talent! 😇❤️

This hymn was my grandfather's favorite and was played at his funeral. How Great Thou Art was written before Vince Gill was born. I know this song word for word. Even know how to harmonize when singing it with my sister.

When I was a child back in the 60s, I heard this song a lot. My grandmother had an album by George Beverly Shea with this song in it, and she played it often. This song gives me such good memories.

They didn’t write this, it’s a church hymnal.

When you consider that this girl got her start on a singing competition, to see her reacting to a standing ovation by a room full of her peers was almost as powerful as the performance itself. She also couldn't have had a better accompaniment than Vince Gill.

Vince Gill is the David Gilmour of country music, and Carrie? well, her performance speaks for itself.

All I can say is, thank God for American Idol. If she hadn’t auditioned and then go on to win it, we might never have heard that beautiful voice from an equally beautiful woman and I’m talking inside and outside. Just an amazing talent.

Oh Honey, this hymn has been around since the 1800's. And this is the most beautiful version I have ever heard. Both Carrie & Vince are legends. Carrie won American Idol in 2005.

What you said about Vince’s writing is true, but this hymn is like 200 years old or something. 😂 This is more of a showcase for Carrie, and of course, Vince’s guitar playing. To hear more of his writing and singing, check out “When I Call Your Name,” and “I Still Believe in You.”

I Still Believe in You is a beautiful song.

That right there was the Holy Spirit flowing from Carrie and filling the entire room. Such a wonderful spiritual song.

Vince is a musical genius! His voice is amazing! He has been involved in so many musical events. He was with Pure Prairie League. They didn't write this song, this song was wrote by Swedish Preacher Carl Boberg in 1885.

I absolutely love this performance… I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it… you can just feel God on that stage… I’m positive that it has brought people to and closer to God!

In the Champion video if you look at the jerseys when they show hockey, Fischer is her husband. The surfer that has one one arm is the one the movie Soul Surfer was about, her name is Brittany, and Carrie was in the movie. She has an AMAZING voice. Vince is from a musical family as well. His dad Mickey Gilley was a country artist as well. Vince is married to Amy Grant, a Christian artist.

This was written in 1885. I’m thinking they didn’t write this. Haha. Carrie was discovered on American Idol when she won Season 4. It’s amazing how much she’s grown as an artist.

This is my absolute favorite, FAVORITE hymn.

Two of my favorites of Carrie's are Blown Away and her duet with Ludacris, Champion. Both really show her power and range. She's had a host of hits over the last couple decades. She's an American Idol winner.

What's even crazier is that she's still pretty young in this video. This was about 5 years after she won American Idol I believe, and the amount of growth she's had in the past decade since then is incredible. She has even more control of her voice now, as much as that doesn't seem possible based on how amazing this performance was ❤ she also released a new version of this song a couple years ago that really shows how much more mature her voice is now, she's hitting the same notes but with a much more relaxed and effortless tone

I happened to have been working this show and in the first rehearsal that Carrie and Vince performed this together I was in the front row. They barely made it through the entire song, I wept.
