This Will Make Vanlife 100x Better For Us (Vanlife UK)
Over the past few weeks, we bought a van and moved in full time. After spending our first proper 48 hours living in the campervan, not parked on Dylan’s parent's drive, one night off the grid and one night in a campsite, It’s become very clear that there is one final piece to this puzzle, a second leisure battery to give us more energy and finally let us use our new coffee machine without problems. Since our new home on wheels can do fully off-grid, having enough battery to power some of our comforts is very important when we’re on the road full time.
Fixing this up was a rollercoaster to say the least… but we are so happy to finally get to the bottom of the issue!

@@2Passports1Dream I'm just teasing. You did what most would have done.
I think what is more important here is not that the coffee machine works (addicted anyone?) but the fact you had a loose connection in your main electrics and this got fixed . If this problem hadn't happened now it would have happened in less fortunate circumstance. I hope you paid attention to what he did to fix it cause it may be up to yourselves next time ! I believe vanlife could be either a brilliant experience or a nightmare depending on how well you can deal with the problems which can come up. For example one thing you could do now is to go over the electrical connections in your van and check they are all tight, just as a preventative measure. I wish you both every success and want you to succeed !

I don't know how much the extra battery cost, and it's too late to suggest now, but I think I would have considered a power pack. At least that way you'd have had a alternative power supply, and the fact you sometimes use sites with hook up, recharging the power pack wouldn't be an issue. Also you could divert some of your solar to the power pack.

Seeing the loose connection reminded me to order a thermal heat thermometer for my RV. It's a very useful tool for identifying component that's over heating like a breaker and loose connection, which have higher then normal resistance causing higher then normal voltage drop, which can lead to electrical fire. IMHO it's time to use interwebz to learn about electricity both AC and 12VDC systems, solar charge controller and inverter. It's good to have spare fuses. Safe travels you two.

Check wattage value of your coffee machine eg a typical kettle is 2500 watts. Make sure your inverter can deliver more than the device needs. The higher the wattage the more drain on your batteries. A 12 volt battery for eg uses 1 amp for every 12 watts. Use high wattage devices only for short bursts of time. Good luck 🤞

Great Video guys, I have a similar Sage coffee machine I'll be installing in my van but I too need to get an extra battery first! Just as reassurance, I know it's all working fine now anyways but you should have no problem with it anyways. You have a 2000 Watt inverter and I checked your coffee machine (which I think is the Duo temp pro from the looks of it?) draws 1600W. Now having 2 batteries which I think you said were 200ah each? is plenty, I can see they're DIY batteries which I've been looking at doing myself too, so not sure what the BMS's are rated at but I'd guess 100a each if not more meaning with the 2 in parallel as setup you can draw 200a now which is 2,560Watts so gives you plenty of overhead for powering other things at the same time as the coffee machine, now that it's all sorted your electrical shouldn't even break a sweat to make you coffees on the road! The loose bolt on the shunt I've also had before where it'd worked loose overtime I assume with all the vibrations, so it provides usually enough connection to still power general lower wattage appliances but when it comes to higher ones like your coffee machine it just cannot get enough through the loose connection. A tip for improving your coffee, I presume you'll have the coffee machine off when not in use, it's a good idea to run a blind shot (no coffee in the basket) before making your coffees to heat up the portafilter as although the internals are all upto temp and ready to go it does take some time to heat that with it being solid metal, this will help give you a better extraction as the temperature will be right! I have a Sage Barista Pro and nothing beats a great cup of coffee! Glad to hear you ignored all the naysayers telling you to get a smaller machine or to give it up altogether!
@BagelzGaming3

Another thing to note is when putting batteries into parallel its best practice to get them to the same state of charge (you may have already done so), this is usually and most easily done by top balancing (charging each battery to 100%) If you haven't already done this if possible, you could disconnect one battery and get one to 100% then switch and get the other to 100%, and then reconnect the 2 back together. This just prevents them from being different states of charge as over time they could drift more easily and especially running a big appliance, it could put more stress on one of the batteries than the other if the state of charge differs too much.
@2Passports1Dream

That electrical setup is a bit worrying. Trapped in a wall, directly under the bed. A loose wire connection can get red hot and the wall will catch fire, then the bed, then the van. Please put a smoke detector in the back electrical area. Maybe get a fire extinguisher. And whatever you do, don't run a space heater or AC for hours without being there. The wiring will get hot and can start fires. I've read multiple stories of people's vans/buses burning down from space heaters they left on overnight with the van plugged into the shore power.

This one was just a personal build for himself that he ended up selling! He really should though, he’s so good at it!
Living in a van is a comprimise and you really need to pick your comforts, you picked a very awkward comfort haha that said, you've got to stick to these things. Its the little things that make the biggest differences when you live sinply. I love a good strong proper coffee!... From my aeropress 😂

Try drinking tea? Hope this helps.

@@2Passports1Dream They could.....or you could just purchase one and let everyone know about the benefits?

@@kevinsmith2994 but we don’t need one and don’t have that sort of money for something to be used once in a while 😅
Never liked coffee & so glad I don’t … the amount of headache it causes….. in the UK it’s all about tea👍🏽

@@2Passports1Dream Yess! they're great for hot chocolates or even Mochas! Glad you got it sorted!
Just buy a smaller coffee machine. Otherwise all will fuse.
