The self-written song that launched her amazing and unparalleled career at the age of 19 (No.1 for four weeks in the UK in 1978). Most of her early songs were sung in a high register but that was a particularly affected vocal because she was portraying a ghost. Stick with Kate and you will be in for a very rewarding journey.

@@PeterBuwen Not quite right. She wrote that one at 18/19 shortly before recording her first album. Most of the other songs on that album were written earlier, such as ‘The Man With The Child In His Eyes’ (mostly written when she was 13) and [EDIT] ‘Saxophone Song’. Those two were on the demo tape that David Gilmour paid to have professionally recorded and produced when she was 16. EMI signed her up after hearing that tape when she was still 16.

This song is based on the book Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. This is my favorite song ever, it's just a masterpiece, but so is all her songs. She's just a genius. A few interesting facts about Kate, she started writing song when she was around 11. Indeed a song that she wrote when she was 13 won an Ivor Novell award for outstanding British Lyric. Actually she become a fellow of Ivors Academy in 2020 joining a distinguished list of other songwriter greats. Dave Gilmour received a demo tape of 50 of her songs from a mutual friend of Gimour and the Bush family, Gilmour was so impressed that he paid for studio time so Kate could produce a more professional demo tape which had three tracks. Via Gilmour this demo tape made its way to EMI who signed her. Wuthering Heights was Kate's debut single release, but originally EMI wanted to release what they thought was a more commercial like track called "James and the Cold Gun" but Kate resisted and insisted that the first single should be Wuthering Heights, in the end EMI agreed to her wishes because they thought that the record would flop and it would teach her lesson... well it became smash hit not just in UK, but it either reached number 1 or ended up high in the charts in other countries around the world. The single has led to an annual event called "The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever" held in locations around the world where participants gather together to recreate the music video of the song, usually following the version 2 video so wearing red dresses. I've followed Kate from the start and felt a connection to her, since she came from the same part of London that I did, she lived only a couple of miles away. I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed if you go down the Kate Bush rabbit hole! She is multi-talented (songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer and video director, etc.) and has acted as an inspiration for so many artists who followed her.

Kate was the first UK female artist to have a number 1 hit with a self written song and it was her debut single. Inspired by the 1967 film of the classic 1847 gothic romance novel 'Wuthering Heights'. The song is written from the perspective of the ghost of the story's tragic heroine, who is haunting her love, Heathcliff. Kate's white dress and ethereal dance evoking the spectre of the central character of Catherine Earnshaw. Many of Kate's songs are inspired by film and literature, and like an actor, she takes on a unique point of view of a vast array of unusual and quirky characters, which she empathizes with and inhabits without judgement. Check out 'This woman's work' from the view of a father expecting his first child. Or 'Mother stands for comfort' from the perspective of a murderer who knows his mother will shield him.

She was 18 when she recorded this in the first ONE continuous take! Every note perfect! No auto tune, no rehearsal. She sang it once only for the recording. And she wrote it when she was even younger. Kate Bush is a prodigy. I remember when it came out. There was nothing like it, and there had never been, and never has been since then. BTW The ghost of Kathy here is supposed to be desperate and scary, trying to break through the window to reach Heathcliff.

She says “Heathcliff, it’s me, I’m Cathy, I’ve come home, I’m so cold, let me in your window”… The clip is filmed with a hazy effect to reflect the story.

Kate Bush has been quoted as an inspiration by many music artists, especially women. Not just for her music but the way she managed to keep control of her work and refusal to be exploited by the music industry. She was a real trail blazer for other women in this regard and set up her own publishing and management companies to maintain control of her work and not get exploited. She looks like this timid, fragile, elfin beauty, but she was fiercely independent and assertive about her music from the start. For instance when this came out in 1978 she was just 19 and her record label didn't view it as a single and chose another song. She insisted that they release this and it went straight to number one both in the UK and Australia. Her debut album was also a huge hit and contained songs she'd written as young as 13. She was the first British woman to get a No.1 with a self written song. As well as writing her own songs, she plays piano on them, does her own choreography, set design, costume design, mime, etc.

Not sure i could grasp how good it was at that age; more the fact that she looked and sounded so different from anyone else, which is not easy in the music industry. At that age, you were ribbed if you showed an interest in something different, though I've long since recognised her genius.

She is singing from the perspective of Catherine, who was murdered by her husband Heathcliff in the Novel 'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Bronte. So she sounds and looks 'ethereal' because she is a 'spirit' haunting her husband. This was much later also made into a film, it's black & white, but watch it.

Kate's music really defies being placed in a genre--it's just Kate expressing her musical soul. What is more remarkable is that she was only 18 when she wrote this. She is an amazingly talented lady who also retained total creative control over all aspects whether the music or the interpretive dance that we saw in the video. Kate and I are around the same age and I have to admit her poster adorned my locker a seeming lifetime ago when I was in training in the RAF (and mine was not the only locker to bear her likeness!). That blue leotard image is seared forever in my mind's eye.

Kate Bush is a British icon and now a fully fledged inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio and deservedly so. She had written her first ever album by age 14. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd was a friend of her brother's and was instrumental in helping her get her first recording contract. Midge Ure describes her as being like this incredibly sweet little girl who doesn't really believe that she's as good as everyone says she is. Sir Elton John is another one of her biggest fans.

"Crazy in a beautiful way" describes Kate Bush pretty well. She wrote this song when she was a teenager (can't remember her exact age... somewhere between 17 and 19. If you've read the book "Wuthering Heights," the lyrics make sense. Kate Bush is kind of her own genre... if I had to out a label on it, I'd call it art rock. This is her first hit and still my favorite. This video is a shortened version of the song... the ending goes on for a few minutes in the ful-length version. Other songs to check out by Kate Bush include "Running Up That Hill," (probably her biggest hit) and an off-beat gem that was an alternative rock radio hit in the early 1990s titled "Eat the Music." Loved your reaction!

You know, I've known this song for decades (litterally...), and listened to it many many times. And the moment I heard the intro, I began to feel tears in my eyes, while smiling at the same time... That's how powerful this song is ^^ ! I've never seen your previous reaction videos, so I'm not familiar with the kind of artists/genres you use to react to, but if you want to keep being surprised (and mesmerized, too), stay with Kate Bush for a while ("This woman's work", "Babooshka", "Hounds of love", "Suspended in gaffa", & so many more...), you won't be disappointed :) ! And try some Bowie, while you're at it : I'm so impatient to see you react to "Blackstar" ^^ ! Have a nice day !

she wrote a ton of demos at 13, but she actually wrote this song right before she was to record it because she caught the tail end of the old TV release of Wuthering Heights and decided to start reading the book a little before and then she was inspired to write this. She hadn't even finished the book yet but she said when she was a kid she went by "Cathy" and not Kate so she felt a connection to the story on a personal level and it just brought this out of her.

The reason Kate Bush is so good, is she was heavily in to her art and wanted to express & envoke emotion through it. Something a lot of 1980s artists did and something not many modern artists do and why Adele is probably the only one doing it well.

So pleased you enjoyed this! Kate Bush is a certified genius. She’s the first female performer to have a self-penned number one hit (with this song from her debut album at the age of 19). The record execs wanted to use a different more conventional song for the single, but she, at just 19, insisted Wuthering Heights had to be it - and she was right. She’s not only an amazingly talented songwriter and singer (with a vocal range of something like 4 octaves), but also arranger, producer, dancer, and more. She goes on to produce all her own records, with full artistic control, as well as writing and directing her own music videos. Must listen tracks include Running Up That Hill, This Woman’s Work, The Man With a Child in His Eyes, Cloudbusting, Moments of Pleasure…. He’ll, pick any Kate Bush song and you can’t go wrong. She’s hard to define, with a wide range of styles, but is unparalleled and a huge influence on female artists who followed.
