When you say "look at the crowd" what you need to realize is that this was being broadcast live all over the world. People all over the planet were literally singing together. I was a young punk at the time and hated popular music but still, me and all my friends watched this performance live and sang every single word with Freddy and the rest of the world. We'll will never see anything like this performance again. So glad that young people are discovering it. I am not an old man crapping on today's artists but every musician today could learn from Queen.

Elton on Freddie: “Backstage at Live Aid, I had a huge area that I kind of decorated. I made sure there were seats for everyone, so that people who were playing could sit down and have a natter. Freddie came over after Queen had stolen the show. I said, “Freddie, nobody should go on after you - you were magnificent.” He said: “You’re absolutely right, darling, we were - we killed them.”” Elton continued, “He was so excited. Then he said, “You, on the other hand, dear - you looked like the fucking Queen Mother when you were on stage. Where did you get that absolutely awful hat?” That was very Freddie. He was hilarious.

@JANICE DUKE ... and he could say that because they were the best of friends. There is a story that Elton tells of Freddie. Freddie passed on 24th Nov 1991. In Dec 1991 a parcel turned up for Elton. Freddie had been on the internet and seen a picture that he knew Elton would love, and that was Freddie's Christmas gift to Elton.

Not bad for a band booked at the last moment and with a vocalist fighting a throat infection huh? And no auto tune....let me repeat that....NO AUTOTUNE. All that said, watching the reaction when he realised he knew songs but never had a clue who they were from....pure gold :D

all the other bands and singers got mad because Freddy and Queen completely stole the show, entirely, a lot of them were bitching that Queen made their comeback and destroyed the whole show, with their TOP NOTCH performance, even tho the doctors told Freddy not to sing, he had nodes on his throat and was in danger of losing it for good, but he said screw that, I'm doing it, it did sound a bit rough in spots, but anybody and everybody who knows him knows that it was just a slightly off day and he can sing better than all of them combined in the studio and usually live too,

Live Aid was a charity concert to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia with several famous acts who volunteered to participate and didn’t get paid. Each act had a 20 minute set. A lot of the other performers played their current songs to promote their albums and didn’t take advantage of the time. Queen took it seriously and spent a week or so putting their playlist together and they had giant clocks in front of them so they could practice and pack as much in as they could in 20 minutes. It also helped that the sound guy worked for Queen and tweaked it so that Queen was louder than everyone else. By the middle of the set, the other acts backstage started to watch them on the monitors and realized that Queen was stealing the show and basically kicked everyone’s ass and they knew it!! Brian May (guitarist) said that they had an advantage because they’d been playing stadiums for years and Freddie knew how to get the crowd involved. Many people say it’s the best live performance. Also, because the stage was pretty basic due to all the different artists, critics didn’t think Queen would pull it off because their shows are typically a huge production with lighting etc. and again Queen shut down the critics proving that they can put on a great show with just the four of them. David Bowie who was a big star back then was the next act in the lineup and was quoted in an interview later saying how was he supposed to follow that. Elton John was quoted as saying 'Freddie, nobody should go on after you - you were magnificent. ' Freddie said: 'You're absolutely right, darling, we were - we killed them.

The really insane thing about Live Aid, aside from Freddie and all the other talent, and the size of it, was that it was SO HUGE that you can literally SEE THE SPEED OF SOUND in the crowd's reactions. As they move and clap and sing along, a pulse washes through the crowd as the sound of Freddie's voice reaches them and they react to it. It's absolutely nuts.

Would you believe me if I told you that Freddie was also a gifted artist and had a degree in design? He drew some incredibly impressive portraits and designed Queen’s logo to represent the zodiac signs of all band members. He also has an entire opera/rock album with Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballe. He never had a vocal lesson, and though he did take piano lessons he played in a way that no one else did. Brian called him a human metronome, haha. That’s not to mention the songwriting ability! Multitalented is exactly right.

Oh, and seeing your surprise at the end was great! Haha. There are plenty of other songs of theirs I’m sure you know. Another One Bites the Dust, for one (which Michael Jackson, a big fan, convinced them to release!) You’re My Best Friend, I Want It All, Don’t Stop Me Now, I Want to Break Free, Fat Bottomed Girls… there are tons for you still to listen to! 21 years together and 15 studio albums. All songs were written by the four of them, whether individually or together. They each wrote at least one number 1 hit.

Did he happen to be the one who had drawn the angel used at the beginning and end of the video "No one but you?" I seem to remember reading somewhere that he may have. Either way, the symbolism, that he is the angel now, is quite touching, given the meaning of the song.

And the level of comfort he showed up there, well, nothing short of amazing, IMHO! I know that what I say next can be subjective, but I truly believe that there hasn't been before, or since, a better showman, in any genre of music! Nope while odds are Freddie had HIV at that time it's unlikely it had progressed to full blown AIDS at that point. Also Freddie himself didn't know at this time wasn't til later that he begin to suspect and even then he got a lot of negative test back as testing was very hit or miss. But yes once he did figure it out the band was on a short list of people who knew as he keep it tight lipped so it wouldn't affect the band in anyway (also why even though he was super duper Bi/Gay he refused to actually admit it in interviews and what not). It's also why I personally have doubts that the day before his death his announcement that he was Gay and had AIDS was his idea or that he gave permission to announce it as he felt doing so would kill the band in the eyes of the public ( not a unfounded fear he had seen plunty of people dragged though the mud and ruined coming out Roc Hudson I think for example) so I think it was someone in his house ( Caretaker or his SO ) who acted on his behalf.

All of them are incredibly talented and play multiple instruments. Roger Taylor has done several solo albums and plays every thing from drums to lead & rhythm guitar, bass, keyboards and many others. One of the unique things about Queen, and I really can't think of any other artists that come to mind, but there might be.... They didn't just push their performance out on the fans, it wasn't "one way". They instead, invited their fans "into" their performances, making them feel that they were just as much as part of and invested in the song as the band, making them all for that short time personally involved with one another. If I am not mistaken, Brian and Roger still continue to do so til this day. Freddie, well he just felt every note that came out of every instrument, he disappeared and became the music, it's as if you could see the music leave his body. And you're right, he could run around that stage like a mad man and did most of the time because he had so much energy when the music was playing, but never lost a breath or even got weak. They are all legends, and don't think another band is ever going to match them, in one aspect here or there maybe, but not as a whole, because Queen had it all, all the genres, their love for and interaction with the fans, their presence, performance, ALL of it was nothing less than 110% because they wouldn't accept anything less than that for the fans they loved so much. Also need to add real quick....Roger (drummer) would keep a close eye on Freddie, he was a filler, he could tell when Freddie would get a little tired, and he would bring his voice in to fill it up, this is why you never caught any weakness in vocals "if" there were any. Roger is an amazing singer as is Brian.

@@adriennevanquill1263 What I respect about Adam is he never came out and tried to be "Freddie" he comes out and does it as "Adam" but in a manner that respects Freddie's work. I do not really like Mark Martel because he is more of a "look at me, I can sound like Freddie" and comes across like he believes he is as good and needs the acknowledgement that he is strong enough to carry Freddie's music. I will say that yes he sounds a bit like Freddie, but a weak one, his vocals will never be as strong and powerful. The only other singer I think could have given Freddie a run for his money in a rock band as far as a powerhouse vocal, would have been Steve Perry from Journey, but Steve could really only sing in Soprano, he didn't have the range and the power like Freddie did in the lower tones.

When you speak about the crowds reaction to them, remember this was a concert for charity with many other artists but Queen stole the show and the crowd were not particularly Queen fans as the tickets had been issued before Queen agreed to join the show. It shows how much we Brit's loved this band even though in interviews they were not sure of their popularity in their home country. That response says it all. Queen live was and is truly an experience from start to finish. The more you watch it the more you get from it and can understand why Queen fans are the way they are about Queen. It's all about the performance. After all their years together what did they do the week before the Live Aid concert? REHEARSE!! REHEARSE!! REHEARSE!! You commented on why Freddie could so easily transition from one type of song to another and sound so good it was because they rehearsed. Some day when you have time try and catch the Queen concert at Wembley 1986, for your own enjoyment, that will give you a true appreciation of Queen! Queen performed years before Live Aid to much larger audiences in South America. I believe their concert in Rio had something like 300,000 people in attentance. Queen LIVE IS TRULY AN EXPERIENCE!!!

Me and a friend were just pouring over their archives recently, and it became apparent on reflection that their output was truly phenomenal. They were in the habit for most of their career recording an album and touring, almost every year, each album producing two or three singles which would almost invariably be a chart hit, and yet they still possess many songs which even listeners of the era aren't so familiar with. It was a true joy to share your realisation that they did "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions". I remember getting the album NEWS OF THE WORLD and hearing those two legendary songs open it, dovetailing into one another.

He was a once in a generation talent. You're right, a lot of people don't see it unless they know what to look for and really pay attention.
