Such a classic, my dad who is conservative actually loved this movie before he found out I was gay. Took him a little adjusting but I was blessed with loving parents who didn’t give me a hard time coming out, oh and my brother is gay 2 so both their sons are gay, my dad was shook but luckily they love us both so much and I love them too!

@@Kyojironaxxpardon me? Why”poor dad”? He still has his kids and grandkids, they evidently still love him and he is sensible enough to know that even if their sexuality might be a challenge to him, they’re still his blood and honestly what they do in the bedroom has NOTHING to do with him. And he should be lauded for that even tho acceptance is bare minimum that should be expected from a parent/grandparent.

@@paulinemegson8519I'm so happy for you and your brothers AND especially your family being accepting of who you all are! I've lived OVER 40 years CLOSETED with my family and I'll have to continue to do so. About two years ago I came out to most of my oldest friends AND everyone was so accepting so that's my tribe. My support has been with our people from day one from behind the scenes as far back as the pre Red Plague days of the 1980's. I lost A LOT of people back then and that's why I do my sideline for the community in a different way also now. I'm an international prisoner and human rights advocate for 38 years so I deal with every level of the system from my juveniles TO my people on Death Row. So that includes the LGBTQIATS community rights, hormone therapy rights AND also their post release housing planning rights. Ppl don't realize that even post conviction since you may enter the system as a male but you go through hormone therapy~they will try to send you out to a male shelter and this will endanger you. So that's the "voice" I've used for decades and helping passing bills and just rallies and other things with orgs. 😊 #TwoSpirit #Mohawk #Taino #NYGenXBIKERLady

They wanted Robin Williams to play Albert first, but since he had recently played in Miss Doubtfire they thought it was too similar. I think it works better this way, it helps that Nathan Lane is actually gay irl, I know it could be a controversial take but there’s a fine line that could switch this into parody or disrespect and it doesn’t when it’s an insider take. Anyway, when this movie aired Nathan and Robin went on a talk show somewhere and the host was pressing them about if they were comfortable ‘playing gay’ or something, and Robin knew Nathan was not ready to come out so he diverted the question being his usual funny self and doing impressions or something. Nathan Lane laters recalls that moment really fondly. Robin was such a great guy in many ways.

I couldn't imagine telling my mom that she needed to be something she wasn't to impress my significant other's parents. I love this movie, but it always kind of annoyed me that Val wants to exclude Albert from meeting the parents. Albert helped raised Val. He's the only mom Val has ever known. They didn't even need to bring the biological mother into it and have Albert play mom. Barbara's parent's couldn't tell the difference anyway.

I was a teen in Catholic school when _The Birdcage_ came out. In the mid 1990s, "purity culture" was in full swing, and anything appearing to be non-traditional, conservative, or WWJD "What Would Jesus Do?", was met with shaming and threats to instill fear in us. It was exhausting; A generation of young people raised to cope with life by wearing an imaginary mask everyday in front of the older generations just to playcate them, to get through your day unscathed. Our LGBTQIA friends didn't have that same freedom to take their mask off whenever they wanted to. To survive, that imaginary mask was superglued on, and it was soul crushing to witness. _The Birdcage_ felt validating to my experience growing up. Especially the scenes where Robin, Nathan, and Hank practice acting like someone they're not, because back in the day we actually did that a lot. [Please keep in mind, that those times were pre-internet.] Watching movies, music videos, and reading magazines in your friend's basement, was a way you could cultivate positive personal growth, away from the pressures by adults. Its also gave us ideas as to how to skirt the social loopholes put upon us, by embodying characters in movies. For instance, every winter each school in our small town had dances, where traditionally the girls asked the boys, like a "Sadie Hawkins" event. Me and a girl from a different school concocted a plan with two of our guy friends. She and I would act as the straight-cover to playcate our "date's" parents. You know, that "My girlfriend goes to a different school" trope, except we were in the flesh "girlfriends". The goal was to have an amazing dinner together, get through the grand March and photos, and dance with our friends. In hindsight, we just wanted our guy friends to experience a school function, without having to wear a mask. During an awkward slow dance, the other girl came up to "cut in" and dance with me, leaving the guys to dance with each other. We played it off as being "silly", but it meant everything as she and I caught a glimpse of our dates dancing together and exchange a sweet loving look during a slow dance, no matter how brief it was. I'm 44 now, and still to this day never understood why adults and parents would want their kids to live unhappy, for no benefit to anyone else but themselves. The Birdcage made me feel, that living as who you are meant to be is possible. Maybe not in our immediate future, but the 2000s were on the horizon and we had hope in our hearts. I'm glad that many people have changed since then and are embracing of all people and cultures. I still have hope. People's Ideas can change for the positive, but changing one's Beliefs will take a lot of deconstructing on their part, before their ideas change.

Robin Williams was short. He rented our Church Basement and Kitchen for the Crew to use while they were they were filming a movie in the area. He was very quiet (not hyper) and very friendly. He contacted the local Game Stop store to arrange a private visit to buy a video gaming system for the Crew to play on their off time. One thing I noticed about Robin is when he was talking to anyone he always smiled but when he thought no one was looking he looked very sad. When I heard about his suicide I couldn't help thinking about that.

*LOVE* this movie! The incredible cast…writing…acting…doesn’t get any better than this. Just recently saw the original (from 50 years ago) “La Cage Aux Folles” for the first time, in French, with subtitles, good but seems to lose something in the translation. Nothing beats Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Hank Azaria, Christine Baranski, Gene Hackman, Callista Flockhart…the first time I saw it (in the theater 25 years ago) I had to see it three times, I kept laughing so hard I missed too much dialogue. Great reaction, Travis! Thank you, I needed a good hard laugh today!

The BIRDCAGE holds a special place in my heart as it is, without a doubt, my all-time favorite comedy. I was fortunate enough to discover this cinematic gem at the tender age of 10 in the movie theater when I had the pleasure of watching it alongside my beloved grandmother. From that moment on, it swiftly captured the hearts of not just myself, but my entire family, solidifying its status as a cherished film within our household. The sheer brilliance of its dialogues resonated so deeply with us that we found ourselves frequently quoting them in our daily lives, bringing a touch of humor and joy to even the most mundane of moments. Amid the quarantine, where uncertainty and isolation loomed large, The BIRDCAGE served as a comforting refuge for me. I sought solace in its familiar scenes and endearing characters, finding solace in the laughter it never failed to elicit. I must confess, I have indulged in the pleasure of watching this film approximately 20 times during this period of seclusion. Each viewing only reaffirmed the notion that this movie is akin to a warm, nourishing meal for my soul, providing a much-needed respite from the challenges and anxieties of the outside world. I would never be ashamed if Albert was my mother Witnessing Albert's unconditional love and care towards Val is truly remarkable.

Man the last time I looked to see if anyone did a reaction to this movie I think there was only like one or two. Now there's like 10. I noticed a lot of the reaction channels 10 to do the same movies around the same time. I would imagine it's because if one of the big channels has people watching the video then there's a good chance smaller channels will get noticed because they're doing the same movie. But this is one of my favorite movies of all time. All my friends know what my top three films are and it's Jurassic Park jaws and scream. But for this to be just behind those movies on my list is saying a lot. It's such a wonderful film. When I was sixteen the girl I was dating showed me the movie and I fell in love with it. I have shown dozens and dozens of people this film. And no exaggeration I've probably had no less than a dozen Netflix and chill nights with this playing. Lol

I'd suggest watching the film Pride (2014). It has an all-star cast including Bill Nighy (The Boat That Rocked), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Dominic West (The Wire), Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz), Ben Schnetzer (Warcraft), George MacKay (Captain Fantastic), Joe Gilgun (This Is England), and Andrew Scott (Ripley). It's the true story of an LGBTQ group that raises money for striking Miners during the reign of Margret Thatcher and also during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. What I love about this film is that it is character driven and not driven by highlighting gay or straight. What people don't understand about the world (well some people) is that it takes all sorts . This film really capitalizes on that idea. I highly suggest you make this your next reaction video.

Hey Travis darlin' hope this finds u well. Yesssss, one of my favs, such a fabulous classic. Everyone did such a phenomenal job. RIP Robin...Ur so right about changing peoples thoughts, my mother raised me southern Baptist, yet eccepted and loved me. The past 5 yrs these haters have been changing her in every way. Its sad, breaks my heart and hard to get her back. I gave up family and religion, yet kept my faith in God/Creator and love as a whole. Even tho theres a war on love, Love will conquer. Thanx so much, take care, Peace

Val HAS to be a jerk and ask his parents to straighten up, otherwise no movie. Hard to get him to do this without making him look like a jerk, although he does redeem himself at the end.

It's extremely hard to upstage Robin Williams who is always just the life of the party anywhere he goes.... but Nathan Lane really outdid himself as Albert. I don't think he gets enough credit for his performance or how this is probably the one film Robin was outshined by another actor.

At the time of this movie, palimony was the best a gay couple could do. I don't think a legal union was yet available and certainly NOT a real marriage.

But even with the predominant LGBT community South Beach and Miami were still comprised of back in '97, people like the Kealey's still would have been problematic . And Hank Azaria is a character gem in this. *in low voice* Ah, but it's pointless, as the shoes will only make me trip.

Yasser Arafat was...well...basically the last best hope for peace between Palestine and Israel, at least on the Palestinian side. On the Israeli side was Yitzhak Rabin. They were working on the Oslo peace process, signing a couple of accords before a right wing Israeli terrorist assassinated Rabin and everything fell apart. Israeli right wingers tried to assassinate Arafat, too, but failed. Not that they really needed to, because Arafat was already a very sick man and died soon anyway. And now, sadly, peace will likely never happen again, and those right wingers are now running Israel.

The original is actually a play, and they made the movie later with the same main actor. In France it’s a cult classic. The American remake is not bad but it can’t compare.
