This video will tell you why Firouzja is the next big thing in the world of chess!

Спорт

In the penultimate round of World Rapid 2019, Alireza Firouzja (FID, 2614) faced Hao Wang (CHN, 2748). The game eventually liquidated into an opposite color bishop and knight endgame. Firouzja kept maneuvering and waited for the right time to exchange the knights.
The resultant opposite color bishop endgame was equal, however due to time pressure, Hao made some inaccurate moves which gave a chance for Firouzja to seize the opportunity to score an important victory to keep his medal hopes alive.

We have to be realistic. Firoujza is not even in the top 10 for Classical Chess. He is an online sensation and obviously has a talent for speed chess to be sure, but to be throwing around the idea of him being a future world champion is a little unrealistic at this point.

Really amazing. When watching the game I thought h4 at two points was an easy draw, because black can't take and has to let the other guy have a passed pawn of his own which makes it almost impossible to use the own bishop later on. First thing white does after the game is point at h4. I love moments like this.

He is a strong player, but he is not that young anymore. He has been playing much blitz and bullet. When you get older, you may not get better, but worse in those time controls. Classical chess is a different thing. We will see how he will improve there. I think he may be the best online player in few years, but classical is tougher. Top 5 maybe, but being the world champion is really hard to tell. I would guess that more likely he will never be the world champion. I hope he keeps improving though.

Chess players have to be the world's most terrible losers. When the arrogance such intelligent minds must carry through life are bested by an opponent it must be crushing.

@@giuseppep.1854 I don't agree with that for a second. When Alex Ferguson was managing Manchester United in their glory days he always said his team was made up of the worst losers in football. He liked that because it motivated them to win more next time if they ever lost. Think about it.

I'm not sure if that's literaly true, there are very sore losers in many disciplines. Anyway, chess as a sport is extremely taxing on your nerves, and the ego factor is huge, for reasons that would take longer to explain. Nevertheless there are very gentlemanly players (among supergrandmasters too) out there. Chess is a non-physical sport that really brings your personality out - if you're a jerk to begin with, it will show.
