When they say North Indian weddings and South Indian weddings, dont believe it all.. 😅 In North India itself there are different religious practices in different places.. and in South India, Andhra wedding is different from Tamil wedding, which is different from Kerala wedding.. and also depends on ur religious beliefs, being a Christian, Hindu and Muslim etc.. Even when my husband and I got married - we are both Hindus whose parents are from Kerala, yet, we had to blend different practices, since we are from two districts within Kerala.. That is how different each regions are.. 🙂🙂😃😃

Seven oths during main marriage ceremony are most important Saat Phere, the important part of the Hindu wedding is for the bride and groom to walk around the holy fire together and the couple lights the fire and pray for a happy future, using the fire to pass on their prayers to the various Hindu deities. Each phera has a different vow, which is read out by the priest before the couple becomes husband and wife. FIRST PHERA - PRAYER FOR FOOD AND NOURISHMENTS “With God as our guide, let us take the first step to live with honor and respect. Let us walk together so we get food” The first stage of the Saat Phera, the couple prays that the Hindu deities provide them with food that nourishes the couple so that they can live together with respect and honor for one another. SECOND PHERA - STRENGTH “Let us be happy and enjoy life. Let us walk together so we grow together in strength,” The couple pledge to grow as one in mental, physical and spiritual strengths so that they can enjoy and share their life together. THIRD PHERA - PROSPERITY “Let us share joys and pains together. Let us walk together so we get wealth.” At this stage of the vows, the couple promises to earn an honest living so that they can live comfortably. Both bride and groom promises to stay faithful to each other and respect one another FOURTH PHERA - FAMILY “Let us not forget parents and elders. Let us walk together so we get happiness by sharing our joys and sorrows,” In this phera, the couple promises to take care of their elders to maintain a strong family relationship. FIFTH PHERA - PROGENY “Let us observe all acts of charity. Let us walk together so we have family” The fifth vow the couple make is to be blessed with healthy children who are kind and courageous and that the bride and groom will fulfill and provide all aspects of their childrens lives with education, love and care as well as values of live. SIXTH PHERA - HEALTH “Let us live a long and peaceful life. Let us walk together so we have joy” With the sixth vow, the couple pray that neither of them will suffer from ill health and that their future is calm and balanced together. SEVENTH PHERA - “Let us be friends with love and sacrifice. Let us walk together so we have friendship” In the final step of the Saat Phere, the couple promise to live a life of love, friendship and mutual trust. The Saat Phere makes the marriage eternal and the couple are now officially husband and wife. There are translations of the vows where the wife’s role is to be a homemaker and that she will look after her husband and children and the husband is the provider. However, in this day and age, it will be very hard for British Asians who take these vows to commit to being a housewife or sole earner for their family, so the vows can be interpreted as being more modern where there isn’t an emphasis on gender biased duties. It is always a good to know what your marriage means before you take the vows. Only then will your vows mean something to you rather than your big day being a tradition because that is the way a Hindu wedding is.

The video, while gives a sneak peek, doesn't do justice to the entire wedding ceremony and the traditions. A Hindu wedding, the way the rituals are structured, is also meant as ice-breakers for both the families. In Hindu traditions, it's not just the bride and groom coming together, but also two families coming together. This is a typically rich, Punjabi wedding, and doesn't represent how wedding ceremonies are done in other parts of India.. Nevertheless, a good, light intro to an Indian wedding.

So the usual Indian wedding goes on for 4 days normally. First day is Mehendi ceremony (which is when people apply Hannah on their hands and feet and dance and eat and have fun), second day is Sangeet (which is the dance ceremony where people from both bride and groom side prepare dance performances and perform on that night - in Gujarat we also perform Garba), third is the Baarat (called "Jaan" in Gujarat, when the groom side goes to wedding place from their home) and Wedding (haldi is usually on the same day before wedding) and the fourth day is the wedding reception (where people come to greet the newly wed couple with gifts and stuff). These are the base 4 days of an Indian wedding but the in-between traditions are different in different regions, like the Chura ceremony they talked about in this video is a Punjabi tradition, which not all regions have. In Gujarat we have a tradition called "Grah Shanti" (which tranlates to "peace of planets"), which is performed to take the blessings of all 9 planets and ask for peace and prosperity in the marriage and the union of 2 families. It is usually performed by the paternal uncle and auntie of the bride and groom, and its rituals are very similar to the wedding rituals, so technically the uncle and auntie marry each other again when they perform Grah Shanti. There are many more small rituals that are different for different regions of India. Also, traditionally wedding is supposed to be organized by the bride side and reception is organized by the groom side, because on wedding, groom comes to bride's home to marry her and takes her to his home. But nowadays both the sides contribute equally in both the big functions.

@Jessica Yaniv's Left Nut What? Telugu weddings last 7 days - duppatti kappadam - brides family presents a silk shaluva to the groom, pattu ravikelu - grooms family presents silk saree and blouse to the bride and then bride is take around the village in that saree and jewelry presented by grooms family in a palki, pellikodukunu/pellikootirini cheyadam (haldi ceremenoy at groom's and brides respective places), baaraat (kind of a thing) when groom's party comes to the venue (usually bride's village). All invitees assemble at the venue that night, bride and groom start their fasting for 24 hours and they are not supposed to leave the venue till the marriage concludes. Next day early morning several pujas take place - gauri pooja for the bride and others stuff for the groom. Groom says he will not go through the marriage since he wants to go to kashi and take sanyas and agrees to cancel the plan when bride's brothers ask him to stay back and marry their sister, then he is seated at the mantap and bride's parents do pooja to the groom, they setup the curtain, bride is brought to in a basket woven with special twigs (called pala gampa) carried by her maternal uncles and seated on the other side of the curtain, leading up to the muhoortam, mangalsahtakams are recited. At the exact muhurtam, bride and groom do _jeelakarra bellam_ (cumin mixed with jaggery and grains of rice and turmeric powder) ceremony. Then the curtain is removed, and groom ties the _mangala sootram_ in the bride's neck. Bride's saree edge is tied to groom's uttariyam symbolizing that now they are tied together for life. Then there are more ceremnoies - talambraalu, finding the ring, kallu tokkadam (groom steps on bride's foot and bride steps on groom's foot), find the ring, saptapadi while taking marriage wows (both of them promise that they will not engage in carnal activity with any other person than their spouse, etc.), then there is a homam where bride and groom cook _khichdi_ with groom gathering firewood etc. and lighting the fire and bride cooking Khichdi. That is when now husband and wife, break their fast and eat together with both the families. By the time they eat, usually it is late evening or even later - like 11 PM. Then they go through _appagintalu_, i.e. bidai, where every member of the groom's family accept the bride as their own family member and promise that they will treat her as well as they treat their own blood. Next morning, satyanarayana vratam is performed at Groom's house. That night will be the first night _shobhanam_. For two or three days, the couple are not disturbed. After about three to five days from satyanarayana vratam, bride's family throws a reception at their expense. This is called _marala vindu_ (literally repeat feast). That is when all the guests who arrived for the marriage will leave town. Bride and groom then are free to go on their honeymoon.

And kissing in public is a no no.. it's considered a very private and special moment for the bride and groom and that privacy is respected.. also arranged child marriages were conducted earlier (generations back) hence the bride and groom are still young to understand the concept of marriage and becoming a couple, hence obviously no kissing there especially with a strange boy/girl in front of their family.. Obviously things are not the same now..

Unlike weddings in other states, Malayalee Hindu weddings are really short (atleast in my place).😁 It's like blink and you miss it 😁 The friend during my wedding was sitting in the auditorium along with other guests. He asked someone sitting next to him when the ceremony would start. The person stood up and replied, "It just got over and I'm heading for the sadhya feast. You better hurry too!" 😁 Btw, here's my wedding video highlights: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gW17r8x6eNa_gZM.html

This is more rich than traditional.. I'm from Kerala (South India). 1) We don't have any tradition of bride or groom coming on top of any animal. 2) Marriage last only for one day. It doesn't go for many days. (Some caste has exception in the procedures, but 90% of weddings last for a single day in the South) 3) "Whoever gets the garland first, is supposed to have the upperhand" - completely wrong. We have specified rules of whom should put the garland first.

But exchanging garlands, groom putting Sindoor on the head of the bride or groom tying the thali (kinda necklace) around his bride's neck and ritual of seven steps and vows in presence of fire is mostly there in all the weddings. Quite surprised this video didn't have seven steps ritual.

You can't put all Indian weddings into one category because they're all different based on their religion, state or even within the state (like, in each district). Also when it's inter-state or inter-religious, two different customs are combined and it's a whole load of rituals. It's actually fun attending them. You see, even if the couple is of one religion, the traditions vary depending on their states or other intra-religious distinctions....Hope you get to attend a wedding in my state, Kerala when you visit there. Unfortunately I'm an NRI😂👍
