This Tip Will Reduce African Cichlid Aggression [When Males Go Crazy!]

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

My all male African Cichlid tank has a few males that are acting a bit crazy. I have an all male tank because I want to avoid the aggressive behavior usually associated with breeding. Still, from time to time I get "breeding" behavior. I see fish, males, pairing up, building nests and doing that breeding dance African Cichlids do. What's going on? Why is this happening?
Well I came up with something to help curb this crazy, aggressive and confused behavior. In this video I share 1 tip to help reduce African Cichlid aggression, in particular when faced with odd circumstances like what I was running into.
Take a look and share your thoughts in the comments below. Have you run into this kind of behavior between males in your tank? Did it result in more aggression? Were you able to do anything to fix the issue?
Remember, we all learn from each other around here, so comment below and share your experience and knowledge.

Some of you have been kind enough to ask how you can help to support the channel. There are a couple of ways that are easy and simple. The first is to visit my Amazon store an pick up some of the recommended fish keeping products that I have listed there. Even if you don't buy anything from my Amazon store, if you use my link to get to Amazon and purchase anything from Amazon, it will result in a small percentage going toward the channel. The good news is that it doesn't increase your cost one cent. Here is the link: www.amazon.com/shop/benochart
Another way to support the channel is to visit my Teespring store. I have coffee mugs with pictures of some of the awesome fish I've owned over the years, t-shirts, tank tops and hoodies with the channel logo and motto: "Always be Learning!"

Amazing... I have a 4" Red Zebra and a 4" Electric Blue that all year have been digging pits and lip-locking to the death... It got so bad and unenjoyable, I traded off the big Blue... Now the tank is harmonious and so enjoyable again... Just wish I would have seen this video before last week, would have liked to keep Blue, as he was my first fish. Keep up the great work, Ben!

Aggression is a crazy thing. I have a red shoulder peacock that I bought when I set up a new 125g back in June. He was one of the 1st 4 fish in the tank. I ordered 15 mid size males 3-4” in size and added them a week later. The fish went off and tried to kill every fish in the tank. I don’t know where he got the energy he never stopped! So I plucked him out and put him in a 60g tank by himself with 1 large bristle nose pleco. I tried yesterday for the 3rd time to put him back in the 125g. Did a water change, while both tanks were 1/2 empty I added him again. I tried all the normal things like moving around the decor, turning the lights off, etc. I left the lights off all day yesterday and over night. This morning I turned the lights on to feed them and I could see the tension in the tank. He once again went off. Shredded up a lemon Jake pretty badly. Chasing a much bigger OB that was the tank boss. So I plucked him out again and put him in my 10g hospital tank. The 60g is going to be used as a grow out / quarantine tank for some fish I ordered. This is the last straw for this fish! The 125g is a pretty calm for cichlids without him. So I will see if a LFS will take him or I will have to cull him. I hate to do that because even though he is not full grown he his a beautiful fish. Maybe if somebody took him and added to a tank with full grown fish he would tow the line. I doubt it!

Great discussion Ben, I kept cichlids years ago and I really did see that kind of behavior displayed! I also saw it in angelfish (even though they're cichlids I kind of think of them differently) I had some that just wreaked havoc in my tanks! I didn't know much about fish keeping back then and it didn't go too well!! I really enjoyed the video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I'm always learning with you for sure! Have a great day! 🌿🐟🌿💚

I thought long and hard about this post, I have kept Malawi Cichlids for 15 years and sadly never found the miracle answer to the aggression problem, moving décor, breaking line of sight, caves, time out tanks, etc. They were all very temporary solutions. Lock 15 serial killers into a confined space and eventually it will "kick off" . There is a killer D and A gene in these majestic fish so all you can do is keep plenty of meds on hand and be ready to pick up the pieces. Cichlids are great but come at a cost, you have to be on your A game always.

Keeping them again, probably 8 years this time probably 16 out of forty years altogether, No all male setups ever. No deliberate rearing or to sell, just fry show up and life goes on. Much more cover in my tanks. 2 × 2×71/2. That two feet deep makes a huge difference in the whole formula of how many in a tank. I'm keeping upwards of a hundred in my big tank.

I have two brothers and I'm 99.9 sure they're both male brothers, who do the circling thing. Then they just swim away, no nest made but it is usually after a water change. Sure hope it's just confusion I've have my share of "guaranteed males" from the breeders being females and creating havoc in my all male tank. That's how I got the brothers in the first place! LOL I kept four males out of 18 fry and ave the rest to a mom and pop store. Thanks for the info you always have great videos!

I have a fusco and an acie that started fighting, so I separated them then upgraded to a bigger tank. When we put them in with the other fish, suddenly the acie acted like a male dog chasing a female in heat. The fusco wanted nothing to do with them but started attacking the other fish, so back out it went, which cause the other one to lose it and start being very aggressive for some reason, I’m at a loss. I do suspect fusco is a female due to lack of coloring and it’s a 5” fish.

Hello! I just found you because of this video. Thank you for the advice, though it might have been a little late for one of my fish...which is why I am here. I was attempting to build an all-male - lake malawi cichlid tank (40 gal) by learning how to sex fish by their color/egg spots on dorsal fins and pointed/rounded top fins. I had 11 cichlids and a rubber-nosed pleco and they were fine when they were juveniles. Some of the fish are hard to sex when they are smaller and if they are like demasoni, where males and females look the same. My fish list: Labidochromis Caeruleus (Electric Yellow) Pseudotropheus Crabro (Bumblebee) Pseudotropheus Demasoni Pseudotropheus Johanii Pseudotropheus Socolofi (Mara Point) Pseudotropheus Lombardoi (Blue Zebra) Pseudotropheus Callainos (Cobalt Blue Zebra) Pseudotropheus Callainos (White Pearl) Metriaclima Estherae (Cherry Red Zebra) Metriaclima Estherae (Orange Blotch Zebra) And what I believe to be a mixed mbuna between (Pseudotropheus Socolofi) x (Metriaclima Estherae). I did not breed this fish, I bought it from petsmart as an assorted mbuna cichlid. I would love to know what this fish actually is, but I have been looking online for a while. It's characteristics are like that of a socolofi only dingey orangish-green with black tips on its fins, black along the top sail fin, and faint stripes on its body with more noticeable ones on its face.. I recently lost my Electic Yellow Lab because he was at the bottom of the order (being less aggressive than the other two types). He would attempt to swim away from the others, but would sometimes swim into/around the breeding hole thing the other fish started making..and would be attacked making his fins all torn. He was too stressed and I felt like I should have taken him back to the store, but he died overnight. All the other fish get along, and I believe I know who is most likely male/female, but three fish I believe to be male have been building the nest hole and a week ago I found fry (now eaten). I noticed they would start digging right after water changes, so this video makes sense. I will fill in the hole and see if that changes their behavior. I suspect the lombardoi and the demasoni may be female, but it's been the two Callainos and the mystery fish that's been in/around the nest. Mystery fish and white pearl actively digging, blue zebra swims in occasionally and doesn't get chased out.

I to have a very aggressive Kenyi. I have put him in time out 3 times, changed decor put him back halfway during a water change with the lights out after water change with lights out, but within hours he is back at it. I’ve now got him back in time out this is his last chance. It’s a shame as he is a beautiful looking fish, he just has serious Aggression issues.

I'm dealing with a male Kenyi ( Yellow with brown bars) and hes super aggro, a Johanni and a Cobalt Blue Zebra. These fish are super aggressive and the only thing that made them ok to deal with was an even more aggressive Yellow Zebra that I do not have anymore. How can I make them less aggressive? I have separated them from the tank. I've put them in separate and same tank for weeks, but once I put them in the main tank its the same old same old angry fish. These fish are absolutely beautiful and I cant display them like I want. Any suggestions?

One reason I stopped keeping Mbuna was the crazy aggression they would get into. The best advice I can give is to provide them with a large tank and a lot of caves, far enough away from each other so that they don’t feel like they are constantly defending their turf.
