This Tip Improved my Guard Retention in BJJ (it isn't a technique)

Спорт

In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu there are certain parts of training which require a good deal of conscious effort.
A couple of these aspects of training are drilling and getting in reps, and changing the stories we tell about ourselves on the mat.
We often accept certain traits we have as an almost permanent condition.
Like the question I received from the person in the video. Which is he thinks he gets his Guard passed easily during rolling. And approaches his training with that mentality.
Changing your mindset for BJJ is tough. Because you are often fighting your inner critic which has a propensity to pop up during difficult times on the mat.
As I describe in the video. I had a lot of difficulty not getting my Guard passed as well. And one of the biggest things that helped me over come this issue was changing my mindset.
Along with that, forcing myself to play from the positions that bothered me the most. So I have more time in the position to work.
So if you're experiencing any trouble with any position. Here is what I would advise you to do.
1. Drill techniques from the BJJ position that is frustrating.
2. Change your mindset with the position. Positive self talk is powerful and will help make the reality you seek happen.
3. Work from that area. Conquer the frustration or fear by moving towards it.
Remember, the beautiful part about BJJ is that your skills and abilities are not permanent. They're always growing and shifting.
And you have a hand in this!

The value with every video is insane. You learn so much from just watching the video. Still you'll have to apply these concepts if you want to grow. Keep it up Chewie!! 💪❤🔥

I don’t need the inner voice. My coach is up in my ear “why are you stopping. Keep going! You’re not tired, stop acting like it” 😅 it’s nice

Damn that hit me so hard. It's so damn true Im just there and I think "well, I may let them pass guard then I will rework it from there". Thank you for the tip. Very insightful.

I do something similar but with takedowns. I constantly tell myself that I don’t know any takedowns and I’m not good at them. But the truth is I actually know several, and I just need to drill them a lot more and become confident. Thanks for the reminder not to defeat myself.

I've heard firearms instructors say the same thing, it takes a minimum 1,000 reps to master one move

Love this guy. So generous sharing his advice. Really helpful. I'm at 5 months in and I'm just trying to concentrate on breathing, relaxing, trying to like being on bottom (???) but moving enough to breath, keeping tight contact with uke. I'm finding the submissions are starting to follow naturally.

Thanks from a blue belt who was listening to that voice! I have also decided to just focus on that advice your instructor gave you. Keenan also had similar advice about focusing on only one aspect of the game. That is quite simplified, but if you look up "BJJ Digest: Keenan Gives Best Advice On How To Improve Jiu Jitsu" is where I heard it from. So great minds think alike and thanks for all the awesome content Chewy!

I think it’s also important to realize that when you start Jiu Jitsu your guard is going to suck for several years. It’s probably the most difficult aspect to develop

Hey Chewie: Brandon , from Edmonton Canada. I train at Straight Blast and I'm a white belt. I've been doing jujitsu for about five months now and I really enjoy everything about it. I recently learned how to scissor sweep without getting leglocked (sweet). I was wondering if you had any advise on how to cut down on the foot cramps . When I sit in someones guard for an hour or so I get killer cramps in my instep/big toe and I have to interrupt my partner mid drill sometimes due to the shock of it. Wondering if you have any tips on how I could lower the frequency or severity of said cramps . I don't like shorting my partner his reps. One Tribe !

    1. Stay hydrated 2. Eat banana's I've gotten cramps and every time it has been from dehydration. Also everyone I've asked has mentioned banana's because of the potassium they provide. There are also ways to lessen the cramp once it begins that I can't remember off the top of my head. I haven't gotten one since though.

Brandon Harris hmmm then I guess it’s something completely different. I know that creatine can cause cramps if you’re taking any. Otherwise try stretching your toes.

I used to get cramps because I wasn't relaxed enough. If you're hydrated and eating bananas I would be willing to bet it's because you're tensing up.

In my 4th week, my guard retention is probably my best skill. Not saying much, but even bigger guys at the same leveln have trouble. But my weakness is cardio, in that after an intense back and forth of pass attempts and defending i get absolutely winded for the rest of the match

I can literally hold my guard for much as i want against anyone in sport bjj but that is not good to be honest my grip suffers from it a lot and it is boring cus there is just constant doing nothing almost just the same wothout change of position. But deff worst is my fingers are fucked and the submissions which i like aren't from guard anyway -.-
