I won the advanced level banjo contest at Topanga in CA in 1979. I didn't get money, fame, or any of the other stuff. But I did get married a year later. Goin' on 43 years.

I have the Ibanez b200 and it's great for the price. It's $450 so a little bit over your budget but not much.

Does that banjo have a radiused fingerboard?
