Good info. The net has holes that are too big for us here in Arkansas. We have pollinators that are small enough to enter. I use a breathable fabric bag with clothes pins to close it off after putting on the flower. Great advice still.

Good idea with the netting to prevent cross pollination. I pull the male flower off and rub it onto the female flower since it will eventually fall off anyway.

I keep the big, hard squash for the winter. They can be peeled, shredded and made into a delicious squash soup. Shred the squash into a pot, add water up to the level of the squash and boil for about 15 minutes or until tender. Add sautéed onions mixed with paprika (add paprika after removing from the heat). Add some dill, salt and pepper. Last step is adding a cup or so of sour cream to the soup. You have to put the sour cream in a bowl and mix in the hot soup juice slowly until it’s thinned out. Otherwise the sour cream will curdle if added directly to the soup. I enjoy this soup all winter long because the squash will keep for months once they get a hard shell.

Just make sure you have heirloom seeds to start with, not hybrid, if you save seeds. I saved some seeds from a buttercup I got at a farmer's market. My neighbors got the seedlings and they were more like pumpkins, not buttercup!

I'm totally blown away by the squash left over winter and seeds protected inside. Totally makes sense though! Have you tested viability of seeds that were left inside the fruit over winter, vs. Fruit harvested at the end of the season?

I tried both seeds this season and both grew just fine. Squash seeds are pretty hardy. Small seeds like lettuce go bad quickly.

Can we harvest seeds like this from f1 hybrid variety

We live in Austin Texas and have a lot of squash vine bores. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep them off your squash plants? Also, do you rotate your crops? Thanks.

Same place, same issue. Moschatas like butternut (honey nut is the bomb)and trumpet squash are fairly resistant. I've found better luck with late planting, like in late summer - but you have to baby the plants along with shade for a while. Sometimes injecting bt above the hole with the frass can save the plant. The good news is that it's easy to keep a few sprouts starting in 4 inch pots all the time to pop in as replacements. Also check out Old Alabama Gardener's method where he doesn't transplant until they are big, and uses foil to deter borers at the base. Good luck, some years it's just a lost cause and then the next you'll get a great harvest.

How do you fertilize your garden We just cant get anything to grow! Of course it didnt help when the Puppy Pitbull next door pissed all over our Garden! Ouch, how we keep him out?

I've had a few cucumbers that looked strange and it was probably from incomplete pollination.

I saved seeds last year, but I am not sure the plants was healthy. The seeds didn't seem to grow well this year. I used them ALL and the animals have been getting to my squash as of late so I have not gotten any to save seeds from this year.

Will a yellow squash and a zucchini cross pollinate? I sometme grow both in my in my garden at the same time.

What does the ripe zucchini taste like? Does it get sweet like acorn squash?

It is fibrous and not good to eat, you can make zucchini bread with a little ripe zucchini as long as it is not hard like a rock

Why not just clip the MALE FLOWERS & use the STAMEN to cover the PISTIL directly without wasting a precious q-tip?

Because I want male flowers to be used by bees to pollinate other female flowers and also bees collect pollen from male flowers too
