Trombones have been doing this since the instrument was in our hands. We are the only brass instrument that does not bend any pitches for tuning. We just tune with our arm. In low range, the positions extend so much that notes start extending past their natural positions and can even overlap the standard positions.

Great guide for beginners and generally young students. In general, have a tuner and check WHERE that note is in tune in your 3rd valve slide. Not all trumpets are made equal. Sometimes a low D will actually be close to the base while the C#/Db is REALLY far. Sometimes D and C#/Db are going to be really close to each other. It’s trumpet by trumpet, so learn what its personal habits are.

It’s bc everyone has a different airflow. It’s not a matter of technique or training, it’s just a physical-born difference. It’s also why everyone has a different place on their same instrument most of the time. As a result though, adding length to the instrument changes your tuning most of the time. (If someone tries to tell you it’s bc you’re simply worse, don’t listen to them) However, you will have to adjust your first and 3rd tuning slide bc of this. It is very weird to get used to but it’ll happen with training. Every partial does have a different tuning though bc the air pressure is not same. A C# below the staff can be all the way out while a C# in the middle will only be half way. It’s all abt experimenting
