This System Keeps A Beautiful City Moving: Prague Metro 🇨🇿🚇 (Pražské metro) | Urban Transport #3

This three-line metro system forms the backbone of public transport in the Czech capital Prague. In this video I will try to give a breakdown on its history, network, fleet, ridership and future.
Hi there,
I am back with new content, filmed throughout the summer. Today we will take a look underground in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Prague. Its metro system is simple, but is really important. Hopefully you will enjoy my video on it! Also, this is a start of a season with lots of exciting stuff coming up! Stay tuned!

In 2013, the DPP (Prague public transport operator) managed the floods well. They closed vulnerable stations on time; there was nearly no water in the Metro system, and many trains and stations were still operating. After the wave left, they fully opened back. In 2002, it was a much bigger wave, and postponed gate closing resulted in terrible damage and long repairs.

Additionally in 2002 it was found that many of the watertight doors inside the tunnels were in fact not watertight. The metro tunnels are also used to run various cables which have to pass through the watertight doors, but many of the cable passages were not waterproofed, allowing the water to leak through.

@@TheDeadfast also they should've closed the metro when the water flow in the river was around 1500 m3/s. They closed it when the flow of water reached almost 5000 m3/s and that meant that metro should've been closed 3 days earlier than it was...

As a Czech-American who routinely spends time in the Czech Republic, the public transportation there, in my opinion, is terrific. In addition, it’s very comfortable, smooth and inexpensive.

To be fair, 2002 flooding was brutal, we call it "1000 year water", becouse it really is quite rare sight, todays Prague is much more ready for its river mood swings.

Interesting fact about any post soviet metro system. Prague metro is a huge nuclear shelter with capacity for over two hundred thousand people. The reason it got floded was that the nuclear doors hadnt been shut in time and a underground hospital, which is part of the shelter, got fludded. The shelter doors are usually hiden by escalators. On the floor u can see iron pannels and above im the cealing a hole where the doors will get locked. You can see some of these doors however as some stations like dejvická, luka and many others have the doors in the metro tunnel and can be seen from the station parol. Additionaly, there is a separate metro station which is not connected to the system that was plannes to be used for communist party government officials.

But then in 2002 it turned out that a few key pressure-bearing walls that should have sealed the shelter system and withstood external overpressure had been … built out of bricks instead of concrete. So everything got flooded. 🙄 Despite the fancy massive steel gates at the entrances.

5:06 Line C will be also upgraded to be fully automated, when D line opens. And there is also 2 historic trains, that are runing some special services. (EČS and 81-71). And today, all lines use systems, which makes trains capable of driving themselfes. Only doors are at the driver. And on some lines have a system, which can turn the train back automatically without driver in cab.

Without metro, Prague wouldnt look like it does today, the city would collapse. I spent many years travelling by metro, first on line C, than line B and nowdays mostly line A, but I dont live close to a station anymore so i mostly use trams or a car. Line C has the best trains made by siemens, but sometimes they make very high pitch noise inside which gives you headache. If you live and work close to stations, it is really very fast commute, although many people smell bad so I prefer my car 😀Also some stations are very deep so it is a long walk to the exit, sometimes longer than the ride itself. I used to commute from Palmovka to Můstek, it took like 8 minutes, but to get from the platform to the street level on Můstek it took 5-10 minutes. Still faster than car which took 15 minutes. Due to its radial system, some journeys take very long time, since you have to travel through the center..using tunnels and highways can be much faster, too bad Prague doesnt use tunnel buses which would connect some places in a matter of minutes, instead you have to ride 30-40 minutes through the center or buses/trams that takes the longer way.

The high pitched voice is because of the propelling system that uses AC engines and IGBT transistors in the electronics that drives them. The older 81-71 trains on lines A and B retained their DC engines, so they make an altogether different, sometimes even singing voice, because the electronics is different. About the tunnel bus lines - following the "success" of the bus line 125, which uses the ringrouad highway, making it fast to travel from around Smíchov to Háje and Chodov, people suggested that when Blanka tunnel complex was opened, DPP should also run a bus line through it. But DPP dismissed that, because, as they said, the line "would be too popular". It's like in the Cimrman "He opened a pub but people kept getting in".

reading czech names isnt the easiest task, especially if you have ř or multiple constants next to each other, so yeah, you can also hear really weird pronnounciations in prague tram network video
