I read an article on this a few years ago. At the end it mentioned some results from his invention of pykrete, the only one I'm remembering being that the massive Ice slides and Ice castle tourist attractions have wood pieces spread throughout them to make them act more like pykrete.

Fantastic video on one of my favorite WWII stories! For anyone curious, this project was done at Brule Lake in Alberta, about four hours west of Edmonton. From what I've read, there is a plaque dedicated to the Habbakuk on the shores of the lake. I was planning to visit last year but had to postpone. Can't wait to try again this spring!

Actually, the plough screws replacing the tracks on ice are being used, even today, although with rather unique vehicles.. Check out the "Screw-propelled vehicles". They have been used mostly in USSR during cold war but not only. They do work great on snow, but cannot take a road, that's the main issue.

Another huge issue for the project was that as they experimented and came up with innovative mechanisms the Battle of the Atlantic was being won. Eventually there came a point where the U-Boats were no longer the menace they had been and Germany's surface raiders were either sunk or trapped in port.

Also, longer-ranged land-based aircraft were able to close the "Atlantic Gap" and provide continuous air cover for convoys, so there was no longer a pressing need for a floating airfield capable of operating large maritime patrol aircraft in the middle of the Atlantic.

Once in awhile you hear about an iceberg the size of a small country breaking off Antarctica and floating around the ocean for five or six years. I always thought some rich entrepreneur should helicopter out there, plant a flag on it and build an ice hotel & resort on it. A lot of adventure eco tourists might pay for it. Obviously it's temporary, but it might be fun to own your own floating island for a few years.

There's another factor that prevented the building of a pykrete aircraft carrier - the range of aircraft was increasing. In 1941, the Kriegsmarine's submarine fleet had plenty of space in between air patrols from Canada and those from the British Isles. In this space, they could easily hide by submerging, and lie in wait for convoys. Pyke's massive carrier would sit in the middle of this space, allowing air patrols to cover the entire width of the North Atlantic. By the end of 1943, this space had almost disappeared. Patrols from Canada were almost able to overlap with patrols from the British Isles. Thus, Pyke's carrier was no longer needed.

I was aware of Pykrete quite a few years ago but, apart from the MythBusters (?) episode, I had never heard the whole backstory until now. And you told it very well! :)

I go through my subscriptions ever so often and trim them and then I get to your channel. Every time I am like I should unsubscribe and I can't. It is because of your message at the end of your videos. I can't support you via patreon because I just don't make enough to justify it. Your message that tells me it's ok and that liking the video puts a smile on your face seems so genuine that I cannot unsubscribe and keep watching your videos. One day I hope to have the extra funds to be able to support you via patreon. Until that day, you sir, get a like on every video. Hope all is well and God bless!

Imagine the absolute shock that N'zi's would've had when they see what is basically a giant iceberg ship floating towards them on the horizon.

The Russians actually built some over-snow vehicles with that screw propulsion system and they worked quite well, not just on snow but also on swamp.
