Today we are looking at the Squier by Fender Vintage Modified Baritone Jazzmaster - both the original Antigua one and the Black one. Specs seem to conflict each other online as far as specs go - the black one might actually have an Alder body - there might have actually been a 2nd run of Black versions done with slightly different specs.

The “high end” squiers are honestly some great guitars. I walked into guitar center to buy a jazzmaster and ended up walking out with a squier classic vibe when it ended up playing better than the fender player, and it was around 400 rather than the 600 dollar fender player. Full gloss neck, good quality tuners, and a tremolo that keeps in tune. A both budget and quality guitar. You obviously won’t get the quality of an LP custom but it definitely does the job. Try one out and see

Leon Balladares i also believe that the Squier VM has actual alnico jazzmaster pickups where the Fender Player one has essentially P90’s under a jazzmaster pickup cover. Something like that. Either way the current Fender ones don’t have actual jazzmaster pickups

I love that color. I have played around with several Squires (high and low end) that were very impressive right out of the box. If I was going to purchase a Squire, that baritone Jazzmaster would be the one. A 30" scale might be fun to work with. I love the deep sounds those baritones produce!!!

As the owner of a Squier (bass) VI, I had debated turning it into a baritone but had hesitated because of the 30' scale. After seeing this review I am again considering making the conversion. I do believe that it would make a servicable addition to the arsenal. Not all brands of strings are long enough, but they are available. Nice review, Trogly.

Slipknot play Drop A and B, so they need articulation so the bass not muddy. EMGs are hi- out put and have a lot compression. singles are less bass than HB so can OD them and keep clarity. plus, scorching mid- highs. more raw in a way.

About a year and a half ago, I had been searching for the Antigua finish jazzmaster baritone. There were plenty of the all black ones new from the major retailers like Guitar Center and Sweetwater. I ended up locating one for sale on eBay from a store in Canada and pulled the trigger. I waited for several weeks and never received the guitar. I called the shop multiple times and they finally told me that the neck was twisted and would no longer be sending me the Antigua burst. They had a black one in stock and sent me that one instead. I ended up refinishing the black version to look like the Fender original 60’s in Ocean Turquoise. I replaced the stock Duncan Designed Jazzmaster pickups with a set out of a Fender American Professional Jazzmaster. It sounds awesome. I put lighter gauge strings on (.13-62) which plays very similar to 10s on a normal Fender scale.

The only thing I could figure why they weigh differently and being made from the same wood may be depending on which part of the tree it was cut. The heart of the tree is more dense than the outer portion. The antigua may be heart wood and the black one may be from the outer portions of the tree it was made from. How much difference between a neck with or without binding. Who knows really. Just a thought. Maybe try a sustain test between them. These two are very cool! Definitely on my bucket list now. Great video. I really wanna try one of these now. If you have an opportunity I’d love to see a review of the 03-04 Antigua Telecaster

I love matching headstocks man. So cool. I'm even thinking about painting my cheapo Squire HH Jzzmaster black to match the body? Then put a white or gold decal on it?

I bought a black one a couple years ago. I didn’t love the black on black aesthetic, so a made a tortoise guard and replaced the plastics with aged white.

Picked up a modified jazzmaster for $650, Had to get it rebuilt by my friend Ryan since the last owner drilled to far into the body to fit a bare knuckle pickup. After all repairs and changing out some flimsy parts I got a one of kind modified jazzmaster that’s feels and plays way better than the stock versions. The guitar def benefits from Locking tuners, I highly recommend if you’re playing low tunings like Double drop D and C#

Trogs you gotta get your hands on a squier vista series Super Sonic. those are listed on reverb upwards of 1000 all the time and seem to actually bring it. The "gunmetal flake" one has tempted me more than a few times
