Nevermind was my favorite record when I bought it but now, it's my least favorite. I kinda hated bleach at first but it turned out to be my favorite after smoking weed to it a dozen times and it hit me that this music wasn't "grunge", more like stoner rock. It's one of those albums that decreases my anxiety when I'm high asf.

I only know of Chad Chaddington in terms of previous Nirvana drummers, and he was great but too "metally". And I know that Nirvana were inspired by The Melvins, but also Pixies. Dave Grohl was perfect for the Nirvana sound: tight, beating the f*ck out of the kit beats but not over-the-top with all the double bass pedal stuff. Those three just worked perfectly, and Pat Smear's contribution was awesome too. But just those three, making that sound, a lot of it had to do with Grohl beating those drums like they owed him money, but sticking with simple, yet hard hitting beats. This is why so many people love Nirvana regardless of music taste - they were accessible, yet angry and aggressive and angsty, using what were essentially simple pop formulas but screaming and you felt that they were screaming for you. A new generation will always discover them - everyone has to have a Nirvana phase. Dave Grohl is a bit annoying now though to me. He's just everywhere. I suppose he's a celebrity but that's what I don't like. Celebrity culture is trash, whereas what Nirvana did was something special. They came out of nowhere (Seattle suddenly became the focal point of fashion, music and culture) and did what all of the greatest of the great bands do: shocked everybody. Who TF were these scruffy guys? And then they heard the music! It hit a nerve and is immortal, at least for as long as modernity (or postmodernity if you want to be pedantic) lasts anyway.

As a drummer, I spent time studying one of Dave's solos that popped up on KZread. It made me realize how unique and phenomenal he is. Grohl has a seamless and perfect balance of intuitively coming up with melodic beats alongside being a human clock. Kurt mentioned that in one of his interviews when the band blew up. Hands down the best drummer of his generation. What those three guys brought in 1991 with the launch of Nevermind was very very special and Nirvana will speak to generations to come. As the country singer Jewel said about Kurt - "That type of freakish talent only comes once in a generation" That was Kurt in two words for me. A freakish talent. I heard Bleach with a friend of mine on cassette if you can believe it. His dad found it at a house he was fixing the AC at that was a rental. I heard it probably 6 weeks before Nevermind blew up.

Listen to old Yugolsavian band Parni Valjak song Hrast and you will hear the same riff 10 years before About a girl, it came out about the time Krist Novoselic was living in Croatia then Yugoslavia.

Kurt Cobain...was a huge Beatles fan. He idolized John Lennon. Goes to show...great minds think alike. I bet Kurt was a fan of Bob Dylan as well. Today's generation typically dismisses The Beatles, but this generations music fans...have no idea that their music heroes...love bands like The Beatles. Kurt...was as much a genius muscially and lyrically as Lennon and McCartney.

I listened to indie rock bands back then and Nirvana with Bleach was relatively big in the indie scene already. They even toured Europe and the venues were bigger than the typical hard rock club (I saw them in a basketball court. But don't get the wrong impression. It was only the court. No seats).

Love about a girl. Love Buzz and negative creep were great tunes too. I’ve always said nirvana was more of a punk rock band than a grunge band. Bleach, Nevermind, and incesticide we essentially punk rock albums. In Utero was a bit of a departure and who knows what direction they were headed but I never bought nirvana being lumped in with grunge band’s simply because they were from Seattle.
