The design leans heavily on the Daytona, and the Zenith in particular, but I think there is just about enough to seperate it from those two. Is there enough character though to tempt you, despite the spec compromises? Cheers, Jody

I have the blue one and I love it. First off, comes in much more impressive packaging than what Jody received. Definitely on or above par with the price. The blue is also more legible. It also makes it a bit more unique in styling. One thing to consider, is that this is about the cheapest way to get that movement. Most of what I could find were well north of $2k. That makes this an excellent value proposition. And the build quality is just stellar.

When someone is reviewing 30 watches a month it’s easy to get caught up in semantics, the bar gets higher and higher. I needed to fill the chrono slot in my collection and the Pitzmann checked off the boxes. The super great movement of my diehard Seiko Marinemaster 300m, over 2mm thinner than every chrono I’ve owned (Breitling, Tudor, Tag, Seiko…). For just having 3 watches in their collection, they’ve done a great job at creating a quality product that looks great. 5 years ago I would’ve never thought of purchasing a micro-brand but the watch industry has dramatically shifted for the better. The one thing I don’t like about the Pitzmann III is the date. It looks like an afterthought and impossible to see the date without a magnifying glass.
I do think one part that they've nailed (perhaps at the expense of WR) is the thickness. 13.2mm is really not bad for an automatic chronograph when most alternatives are in the 15mm range. Someone pointed out why not just get a Speedtimer - the automatic versions are really much larger than this. Frankly, I sold my Hamilton intramatic auto because the thickness was just a bit much at the end of the day. The fact they were able to fit everything in the package their presenting is pretty impressive.
@ivanharlokin

Excellent point. Where I disagree with Jody on this watch is that I think that 50m water resistance is more than adequate, and pushing (pointlessly) for more would result in a thicker watch.

@@ivanharlokin Who exactly keeps on swimming or snorkeling with mechanical watches? And especially chronographs? I rarely see a person with a mechanical watch in the day-to-day life. 50m is absolutely perfect for a sport chrono. That watch would be on a rally leather strap half the time anyway.

Very cool Homage, at least from the Look and complication. The price is a bit outside from what I would be willing to pay. Definitely a good option for someone that wants an "affordable" Daytona style chronograph. Thanks Jody 👍🏽
i think on the one hand it certainly looks like the daytona and the speedtimer... on the other hand how many ways can you make a 3 subdial chrono without it looking a bit... vegemite like the seiko SFJ00X series you recently reviewed? i actually like that they've managed to put the date window at 6 instead of at the 4, 4.30 position like so many other 3 6 9 subdial chronos annoyingly do so.

Really great to see an Erebus 2 announcement is coming! I wanted to support the first model, but it wasn’t exactly for me. Can’t wait to see the next!
My brother bought this one immediately on release. Looks great in person and he loves it. Really nice build quality. I think they are following the christopher ward business model. Do a few great homage watches and then go for some originals later.
I like the brand a lot. I have the Pitzman one. I’ll wait on this one, hoping that they’ll do some different variations. This does look like a great value, however.
I love the skeletonized hands, maybe shouldve darkened them or sth, but hands blocking the subdials is a frequent annoyance of mine, who uses the chrono function often. Also, props for launching a chrono and not another microband diver as their first tool watch
Yes sir…8R series are very serious movements! Nice watch.
I’m like 99.99% sure this is the movement tag tried to pass off as in-house also. That movements doesn’t come cheap at all.
I see the Singapore street circuit, and possibly Nurburgring?
As always a very objective review, good job!
It's a,very nice looking watch. I suppose it's totally impossible to come up with a white dial, black subdial chronograph that doesn't copy something. It actually reminds me of a Seiko chrono though I can't remember the model number. 50m water resistance is definitely not enough. 100m is the comfort zone for everything bar a dress watch. Excellent review Jody !
The one near top right is definitely Watkins Glen International GP circuit.
That date there. Wow. I hadn't realised. Fantastic. I'm in
Stunning watch. Looks unique enough. Wouldn't mind seeing more watches using that movement.
Taking a chunk out of the subdial that's parially hanging out into the main dial just to put a date window utterly ruins the lines for me. I know some people don't like 4:30 date windows but for a three-register chrono I feel like this glaring scar just doesn't work. Maybe 12 o'clock? Or something entirely within the subdial rather than bridging it? Otherwise seems quite nice. Pitzmann seems to be shaping up quite nicely otherwise as another fine CW-level brand. Nice to have more relatively affordable high quality.

I quite like the look. It skews closer to the Primero, but changes all the design elements I didn't like in the original
I've been wearing my Pitzmann Chronograph since it arrived just over a week ago. It's absolutely stunning. In terms of design cues, it's closer to a Zenith Yoshida Special Edition but for a 5th of the price and with a well-respected Seiko automatic chronograph movement. It's my first automatic chronograph and I'm very happy with it. Definitely recommend!
I think it’s worth every dollar; HOWEVER, the price puts them in a VERY crowded group. I am interested to see where they from here though. Thanks!
I absolutely love it.
Y'know for a horology priority collector this represents great value, the auto column wheel entry point in Swiss is £5g+ for Zenith, Tags, this is seriously in the same ballpark for 3Gs less........try and find a Seiko at this price and specs
Ooooohhh cool idea, actually do the f1 circuits on the back of a watch!
This is great insight Jody. Thanks for sharing. I truly love Pitzmann Watches and this one is no different. Nonetheless, I feel you hit the nail on the head with your niggles … but they wouldn’t be showstoppers for me. I’d get myself the “Ice Blue” version 😍
As a Korean I'm hooked andbhes not even through the intro 😂
Interesting: a more critical review than I probably would have expected. I think this looks fantastic and has made me reconsider whether I would not actually like to add a chrono to my collection. Certainly, I'd prefer that to be automatic, and then, really, what choice do you have if you don't want to spend too much? Surely, this has the measurements, execution, and styling with just about as much improvements over the big boy as that it misses out on some things. I used to be in the 10atm camp all the way, but really, I don't see why anyone would deliberately enter the water with this and generally, one actually can, even with 5atm as long as they're not having too high expectations. Fair enough though, I reckon it should have been possible to offer 10atm, so why not do it? The bracelet length seems an odd one. Certainly there seemed to be plenty of spare length with the II, so why not with the 3? Is it because Pitzmann knew your size (you do advertise it regularly, after all)? The lume performance is a downside. Not because I think lume generally performs such an essential function, but that decay on the hands looked to be too quick. The handset, though, I think I'd truffle not to see it, but granted, with the white lume, I think one is better off with the ice blue version, which I think may just look a little better anyway. Given just how often the quality of Pitzmann is raved about, I think this is an easy one to recommend for those into chronos that have some budgetary restraints, but that's coming from someone who doesn't normally wear chronos and has had no hands-on experience with this one.
Nice, except for the three littler clocks on the clock face, the confusing rings, and the extra hands and buttons... Does it have a day/date? And most important does it fit my 9 inch Dutch average wrist? Do they sell nice clean clear watches too?
@Yoshikaable

It has the date, no day, they say the bracelet is for up to 10 in but you can probably request more links just to be safe.
Beautiful...
I don't like chronographs at all so I'm probably biased but putting that movement in shows they are serious, lets hope its better than the NH35 at actually telling the time. It will probably be more reliable than the obvious Seagull alternative. And the build quality looks pretty good. I've got a really nice Tissot and its name is a 12 digit number so I couldn't tell you what it is, at least this naming scheme will let you differentiate between their products for a while yet.
Brands Hatch, Red Bull Ring, Watkins Glen, Road America, ...
Their webpage says that they unveiled a new watch under the project name "Deuce" ... Does that mean that they dropped a deuce? 🤣🤣
One of the circuits is Singapore
For me a butterfly clasp doesn't belong on any sports watch. The last thing you want is your watch flopping around on your wrist. It's the reason I didn't buy an aqua tera reaceantly.
I find this watch pretty convincing
The Breitling Navitimer may only be water resistant to 30 meters but the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is to 50 meters 😉
Too late. Been looking for a Daytona style for a while. Nothing great going on during the Ali sale. Decided to go with a Citizen CB5874-90A. Looks great, feels great, perpetual calendar, and it's radio controlled so it's always accurate. Set the time zone to NYC and done, the watch took care of the rest! Very happy with it. You need to get a radio controlled on your channel.
This is a stunning watch with and amazing movement, big tick from me
Those are Definitely race tracks! No doubt.
That's a good price for a mechanical chronograph with an 8R movement 🎉
I've been moist for an NE88 but I have a 7.5" wrist. I can forgive the water resistance, and probably live with the legibility (nothing beats a Speedy) but the bracelet makes it a pass.
It's a gorgeous looking watch, I really like it. But I can already hear the Rolex gatekeepers sharpen their knives...😬
Magic they managed to make that movement cased thinner, but yes design should've been less derivative. A lot of potential
Nice, but the bracelet issues would be a deal-breaker for me.
The lume and bracelet are dealbreakers for me at this price. Should be much better.
Nearly everywhere watch copies each other's design in one way or another. It's inevitable because a watch has such a centralised function.
I think this is. a stunning piece especially the blue. I to would like 100m WR but the rest is like Jody says a moan and niggle. I think we need to not expect all watches to have micro adjust etc because it’s the variety of watches that keeps us buying them. If I had the cash I’d buy this in a heartbeat.
Amazing looking watch and the quality looks top notch, but man that name...
Looks like any other chronograph, not copying anyone or anything.
The Blue Face will be in my collection. Wow. Love your show by the way Thanks!
All that money for something that won't fit properly. Just like a lot of grand seikos! I'll pass...
Interesting that Seiko uses their Magic Lever mechanism even in their high-end movements and how similar the movement in the video looks to something like a 7s26 at first glance.

Great looking watch, but it would have been far better as a no date. I am just not sure if i would spend over £1100 on one, though.
It appears well made but so does a San Martin, as for the movement - many reputable genuine watch suppliers are selling the NE88 for $300 ( £238 GBP) as opposed to your rather expensive eBay search. Always interesting to see what's out there - great content as ever.

Good review Jody. As you said getting that movement in a watch at this price is pretty impressive. I also like the way they've integrated the date as well. That being said though, the lack of any microadjust and the overall design just leaves me feeling a bit meh about the watch as a whole.

I think you hit it on the head early Jody: do we like it more than a Monta, Christopher Ward, Oris etc. Also depends on 1) how much finishing means to us and 2) how much stock/value we put in that premium movement. And how much stock we put in design.
This is a complicated premise Jody. Popcorn ready...

Find ANY with the absolutely moronic 24 hour dial? Nope, if you are not spelunking or taking a space walk……well, like I said…..moronic waste of dial space. If you want a cheap tri-compax with a 12 hr totalizer then try the mecha-Quartz Seiko movement VK-67. If Seiko had done that on the Speed Timer I would have snatched it up. That’s why. ☮️
