Catherine of Aragon Introduction transcript:
But there's only one that you need to hear from tonight. New York, I'm about to win this competition. Maria! Give me a beat. Ooh, muy bien!
So, since the day I arrived in England, let's just say my faith has been tested on more than one occasion. First things first, I'm shipped over from Spain on the night of my sweet sixteenth to marry some prince called Arthur! And I'm like... okay. Then Arthur dies, so naturally I'm imprisoned for seven years. Really helps with the grieving process, you know? But still, I'm like, okay, ugh! But thank God! They rescued me just in time to marry Prince Henry, my dead husband's brother. Okay, so I'm thinking 'bit weird', but if you seen him back in the summer of '09, lemme tell you, he was... okay!
So seven years later, we're still trying for an heir. He's trying really hard, and I'm like ugh, okay. Then he starts coming home late, "I was just out with my ministers". But there's lipstick on his ruff, and I'm like okay!
Suddenly he wants to annul our marriage, move some side-chick into my palace, and move me into a convent! Now, I don't think I'd look that good in a wimple, so I'm like, no way!
No Way lyrics:
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way
There's no way
You must agree that, baby, in all the time I been by your side
I've never lost control, no matter how many times I knew you lied
Have my golden rule
Gotta keep my cool, yeah, baby (you know she's gotta keep it cool)
And even though you've had your fun
Running around with some pretty young thing
And even though you've had one son
With someone who don't own a wedding ring
No matter what I heard, I didn't say a word
No, baby (you know she never said a word)
I've put up with your sh- like every single day (whoa, whoa)
But now it's time to shh, and listen when I say
You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me, baby there's
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way
If you think for a moment
I'd grant you annulment, just hold up, there's
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way
No way
No way
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
No way
No way
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
There's no way
So you read a bible verse that I'm cursed
'Cause I was your brother's wife
You say it's a pity 'cause quoting Leviticus
"I'll end up kidiless all my life"
Well, daddy weren't you there, when I gave birth to Mary? (Oh, hi baby)
(Daughters are so easy to forget)
You're just so full of sh-, must think that I'm naive (whoa, whoa)
I won't back down won't shh, and no, I'll never leave
You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me, baby, there's
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way
If you thought it'd be funny, to send me to a nunnery, honey, there's
No way

There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
No way
No way (no way)
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
There's no way
Hey
Let's go
Here we go
You got me down on my knees
Please tell me what you think I've done wrong
Been humble, been loyal, I've tried to swallow my pride all along
If you can just explain a single thing
I've done to cause you pain, I'll go
No?
You've got nothing to say?
I'm not going away
There's no way
You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me? Baby, there's
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way
You made me a wife, so I'll be queen 'til the end of my life

Right? There's a reason the wives who were princesses of their own lands were treated significantly better than the ones who came from England and were his subjects. There's a reason THOSE ones weren't executed. He would've done what he did to Anne and Katherine H to ALL of them, if he could have. Man was a gd psychopath. But I guess that's what happens when you're raised to believe you are literally a god and everyone else is born to serve you.

So if I remember my history, the bit where she gets on her knees is an actual event. Apparently she burst into the kings court, threw herself to her knees and made a scene about him trying to get rid of her even though shes been a good wife. It was a play on her side to try and gain support of the royal court, that shes the victim in all of it.

I think it was one of the reasons he couldn't kill her, even. All while he snuck around with Ann Boleyn, Catherine made the public adore her. When she pulled this stunt off in front of the entire royal court, it made everyone love and pity her for her flawless performance of a wife's role and the fact that put on the spot, Henry could literally not find any fault in her! It cemented her in the eyes of England as the perfect wife and a competent queen. Killing her would probably have caused actual revolts.

History nerd here, and it's fun facts time for those who want it Fun fact 1 : Catherine of Aragon was actually to be wed to Henry's older brother (Arthur). However, he died a few days after the marriage, making Henry the heir. His father, Henry VII, still wanted to get his son to marry Catherine, although he was like..8 or something. They wanted to keep their alliance going with Spain. At the time, once you're married, well, having another marriage was a no-no. Henry VII used the excuse "Akshually, my son died too early to consume marriage." And it worked. When Henry could marry, they wed. Fun fact 2 : Catherine was a badass. She actually fought wars while pregnant, which might have been the cause for her many miscarriages. I think it was against the Scots if memory is correct. Fun fact 3 : She gave birth to the very infamous Bloody Mary, who was a BIG Catholic and against protestantism and executed any protestants. She also got rid of the Anglican Church during her short reign. Fun fact 4 : Upon divorcing, Catherine joined a covent being the big Catholic she is. Although this fact is to be taken lightly. Fun Fact 5 : Also Henry was said to be very handsome at the begining and when he became King he threw a lot of parties and was very careless with the money however he did give a lot of things to his people...at first that is. Until there was no money left, lmao. Anyways, Catherine rules, I love her, and she was such a badass Queen ong.

More fun facts to add!! After the divorce, Catherine was banished away to a country house and was held there under worsening conditions as time went on. Catherine and Mary were also banned from seeing or writing to each other for years until her death from cancer at the age of 50. All of this was put upon her to try and force her into signing an annulment and recognising Henry and Anne's marriage as legitimate, she never actually gave in and remained adamant that she was the rightful Queen and loyal to Henry. Also the title that Mary got, Bloody Mary, is often deemed as inaccurate as compared to many reigning nobles then she didn't kill that many people, of course this history is written by the winners and therefor wanted her to be seen as evil, and then such given said moniker to evict such hatred.

You are correct about her rallying the troops and leading them into war against the Scots. The Scots invaded while Henry was fighting a war for France. She was considered to be a brilliant strategist for how she handled the entire situation. She was pregnant at the time, I've seen some sources say that it was with a son, but I'm not sure if there was any proof of that. She had six miscarriages overall

As a fellow history nerd I have to correct you, Catherine was married to Arthur the 9th of November 1501 and Arthur died the 2 April 1502. Which is why several people discuss that Catherine couldn't possibly be a virgin after months of marriage, especially not in that time where the entire alliance depended on their successful marriage and an heir. But as she swore she was a virgin, Arthur was dead, her Ladies didn't say that the marriage had been consummated, and the Pope granted a dispensation, no one blinked as she married Arthur's brother Henry VIII.

Long herstory comment for algorithm Catherine of Aragon was a *boss*. There is a story of how once, when Henry was away, the kingdom was attacked. Heavily pregnant Catherine herself rode into battle with her men and managed to drive the attackers away, sending Henry the bloody coat of the defeated leader of the attack. Unfortunately, that child died very soon after he was born. The only child of hers that survived to adulthood was Mary Tudor, also known as Bloody Mary (for burning protestants at the stake for not converting, but that's a whole another story) The part of the song "you got me down on my knees, please tell me what you think i've done wrong" is a reference to an actual thing that happened when Henry was trying to divorce her. Catherine was on her knees and refusing to leave, repeating again and again that she and his brother never consummated the marriage and thus her marriage to Henry is valid, embarrassing Henry publicly. Till the day she died she refused to accept that she was stripped of her rank, despite everything Henry did to disrespect her further. Her tomb was even disrespected for centuries, until recently, where she finally got a proper grand tomb befitting of a queen. The story goes: a young girl named Katherine Waller wrote a letter to the dean of Peterborough in 1883 which said that she has read about what happened to Catherine's grave, and asked "Could not all the Katherine’s of England restore it? I am only a little Katherine, twelve years old; but if all the big Katherines in England gave 10s and the little ones 5s would it not be enough? I enclose 5s and hope that you will accept it as a small beginning". That letter turned into a fundraiser and a few years later Catherine of Aragon got her memorial where it still stands to this day

Fun fact about the bible verse: Leviticus does, in fact, say that you would be cursed to have no male children if you marry your dead brother's wife because it's a bad thing to do. However, Deuteronomy, on the other hand, says you that you are *required* to marry your brother's wife if he dies. So uhhh yeah there's some bible inconsistencies for you.

  • @SpringStarFangirl

    @SpringStarFangirl

    2 ай бұрын

Okay, so here's an explanation of why Deuteronomy requires it but Leviticus forbids it. Deuteronomy is referring to a situation in which the brother died childless, no stillbirths or miscarriages either. In that case, the marriage is what's called a levirate marriage; it's meant to ensure that the dead live on, and the first child ensuing from this marriage would be considered the child of the brother and his inheritor. (There is a way to get out of this, but I won't get into that here.) The Leviticus verse refers to a situation where the brother's wife _has_ gotten pregnant from the brother.

Fun fact about the line: "And even though you've had one son, with someone who don't own a wedding ring." It's a shady dig at the bass player, lol. It's not elaborated on, in the musical, but ya. In the live show, the 4-member band is on stage in the background, dressed in black bodysuits but also bedazzled. They're named after 4 of the historically notable irl ladies-in-waiting to the queens. - Maria de Salinas on Drums (Catharine of Aragon's LiW) - Joan Meutas on Keyboard (Jane Seymour's LiW) - Margaret "Maggie" Lee on Guitar (Anne Boleyn's Liw) - Elizabeth "Bessie" Blount on Bass (both Catherine of Aragon & Anna of Cleves' LiW) Bessie Blount did give birth to a bastard son by king Henry VIII, while he was married to Catharine of Aragon. The kid was named Henry Fitzroy and the king officially recognized & financially supported him as his illegitimate son. Fitzroy was low-key groomed as a last-resort contender for the throne, if Henry didn't ultimately have a legitimate son. But he also died as a teenager, so it was a moot point, in the end. But, no wonder Catharine is annoyed...Henry didn't keep that particular affair secret at all, nor act ashamed of it, lol. & you can imagine how awkward is was for Bessie to continue be a lady-in-waiting for Catherine, after it became obvious Henry got her pregnant. (And, you have to wonder just how many of the confirmed 'affairs' Henry had, were truly mutually consensual, in the modern context. He was the king after all.)

  • @DaxonDarling
    @DaxonDarling2 ай бұрын

So fun fact. Most (if not all) of the wives were ladies in waiting or worked in the castle at some point (except for this wife).. you could say Henry had a thing for his ladies in waiting. Also 14:21 the Bible verse reference is about Leviticus 20:21 Says, "If a man takes his brother's wife, it is severe defilement and he has disgraced his brother; they shall be childless"

  • @SpringStarFangirl

    @SpringStarFangirl

    2 ай бұрын

The irony is that because Arthur died childless, let alone before consummating the marriage, this would qualify as a levirate marriage under Jewish law. (Obviously they're not Jewish, but they're using verses from our scripture, so I feel validated in saying this.) Levirate marriage means that the nearest male relative (in this case, Henry) is obligated to marry his brother's childless widow and have kids together, and the law then counts their first child together as the child of the dead brother.

@@SpringStarFangirlThis is actually really interesting! Someone in another comment mentioned that, but there’s also a verse in Deuteronomy that says you *have* to marry your brother’s widow. According to them, the difference is that, Deuteronomy is referring to a levirate marriage. Basically, if the brother and his wife had no children (no miscarriage, no stillbirth, nothing), then his brother should marry his wife. In any other case, the Leviticus verse is true. 9:38 This kinda shows one of the things that makes Six so interesting. It’s structured like a pop concert, so it’s just the queens and the band on stage at any given time. All the queens sing back up for each other, and one of my favorite parts of watching different animatics is seeing how different people interpret it.

14:42 Fun fact, there actually is: Leviticus 20:21 "If a man takes his's brother's wife, it is an unclean thing. He has discovered his brother's nakedness. They shall be childless." This proves to be bogus as a few lyrics later she shows to have had a daughter.

To throw my 2 cents on the "live version vs studio recording" conversation around the song All You Wanna Do, the Samantha Pauly live version does have more emotion and character in it, especially the back half, but this does come with a caveat. Because it has that stronger character emotion in it, the actual singing can suffer a little (singing when crying, laughing, screaming or any other strong emotional response tends to do that). Since your reactions often focus on the character stuff through the songs, this is probably the more preferable version for you and the one that many of the comments are suggesting, but I thought I would try and give a suggestion with a bit more detail for an informed choice rather than leave you with nothing to go on except that one it 'better' than the other.

18:20 so fun fact, this section is based off of Katherine’s famous speech at Blackfriars, where she manages to run rhetorical and argumentative circles around Henry’s lawyers and plays the role of the loyal and penitent wife in order to achieve that goal. In a master stroke, she got most of the onlookers. In England and abroad, she won the court of public opinion, to the point her great-niece Christina of Denmark later remarked to an English ambassador that it is rumored Henry poisoned Katherine just to get rid of her

So just as a fun note as you work your way through these each of the six wives song and vocal styles was styled after a famous pop star. six ex-wives and their corresponding pop star inspirations are: Catherine of Aragon: modelled on Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Jennifer Hudson. Anne Boleyn: modelled on Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, and Lily Allen. Jane Seymour: modelled on Adele, Sia, and Celine Dion. Anne of Cleves: modelled on Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. Katherine Howard: modelled on Britney Spears and Ariana Grande. Catherine Parr: modelled on Alicia Keys and Emeli Sandé.

Going to SEE this musical for the first time in just 9 more days 😝 ... but I have listened to, memorized, sung, imagined, and researched the stuffing out of it. Very quickly, actually, I think it was when this song played upon my first listening... this musical raced into the elite level of my favorite musical rankings. Catherine of Aragon IS my favorite of the wives. SUCH a cool back story...and the most beloved of all the wives by the public. Can't wait to keep going!! So fun!

The "Daughters are so easy to forget" line is a reference to the fact that, if the monarchy wasn't horribly s-xist, Henry could've stopped with Catherine of Aragon. He actually had MULTIPLE daughters, but daughters weren't accepted as contenders for the throne unless the King was completely unable to produce males (and even then, there was a solid chance the nobility would start a war rather than let a daughter take over). She's making the point of how ridiculous his quest for an "heir" was, because by the time Anne Boleyn was executed he already had TWO. In the most perfect twist of irony ever, one of those daughters ended up being the most successful Tudor ruler. Completely overshadowed both Henry and his dad. Fought through everything standing in her way to be Queen and stay Queen. And that woman was Anne Boleyn's daughter. It's just so perfect. If there is a god, I bet he had a hand in that.

Henry did have mistresses Elisabeth blunt and mary carey anne boleyn's sister, and catherine was expected to look the other way or turn a blind eye so to speak. That line about being cursed does come from the book of leviticus about widows and marrying your brother's widow. I'm not sure of chapter and verse, but it goes, "If you marry your brother's wife, you uncover your brother's wife and remain childless." Even though she gave birth to mary, henry took that verse to mean no sons to inherit. Henry got a living son through his mistress and in his mind that proved there was nothing wrong with his ability to get sons that it was all catherine's fault and that there was something wrong with her. Hope that helps.

I just wanted to put out there that there is actually an official live version that is released, which is the Broadway live on opening night version. It includes both the songs and at least some of the in-between scenes. That way you could hear what people are talking about with the live versions without using bootlegs. But if you want the animatics, they're probably mostly the West End version, which came out first and is more studio polished.

Yes!! Been looking forward to this! Idk if anyone has mentioned it, but Six isn't a typical musical. It plays out more like a concert. But I adore this style of music for Aragon, since she was a princess of Spain before moving to England. There's a TON of historical references in the music. Like she was considered the true Queen, even after Anne Boelyn was crowned.
