This SECRET TRAIL Blew our MINDS! | Petrified Forest National Park

We were lucky enough to meet with a park ranger who told us about a secret trail inside Petrified Forest National Park. The Blue Forest Trail is not much of a secret but there are no signs for the trailhead and you wont find this trail in any park information. This out and back trail starts at the Tepees and ends in the middle of Blue Mesa Trail. This hike turned out to be one of the best hikes in any national park we have visited.

I was there a week ago. Viewers should be aware that Blue Forest, and Blue Mesa are different hikes, from different starting points, but can be connected. Blue Mesa is well marked off the main road, and a fairly easy, if hilly, paved trail that you get to at 7:45 as you point out. It has spectacular views, but Blue Forest is as you show, much more of a wilderness hike, with all that, and more. Thanks for sharing this video.

Different minerals composition causes the different colors. I did a study there about 30 years ago regarding visitor theft of the petrified wood. Glad you appreciated it like I did. Strange and beautiful place. Check out Bryce Canyon National Park if you haven't yet.

The blue Mesa trail has been shut down as an official trail since the 1950s. This is the most amazing hike I've ever done. I went on a road trip with my wife to arches, zion, grand canyon, petrified, great sand dunes. You can get info at the information center. Lastly, I'm glad they discontinued this trail because if the public knew about it, they would destroy it probably within years.

Hope we didn't expose a trail we shouldn't have! 🤐. A retired ranger recommended it to us and we over heard a working ranger recommend it to another hiker later that day. Amazing scenery and on our list of favorite hikes for sure.

Delta Lake trail at Grand Teton is the best one I’ve been on. The reward you get at the end of the hike is beautiful

Another place that looks very similar to Blue Mesa is the north part of Capitol Reef National park called Bentonite Hills. Check it out

I’ve done this hike three times and I still have not seen all the terrain between the teepee’s and Blue Mesa. Also, I have found fossils at the top of the ridge along the back end of blue Mesa. It was an eroded tail and limbs. Took photos!

Visited in 2019 stopping at Agate Bridge, Puerco Pueblo. Stunning country. Newspaper Rock was a little disappointing as I thought I would be able to get closer. But I understand they are protecting the area from vandalism, etc.. Thanks for sharing your hike! Now I need to go back & take Blue Mesa!

The trail to Blue Mesa was 3 miles round trip. We did not hike all of Blue Mesa so not sure how long that whole loop is. Thanks for watching!

@@SOSASATSUNRISE the loop at the bottom is about a mile and meanders around that valley. If you made it up the hill, you did a lot of the trail.
