Yeah, I’m from the northwest and my husband recently had a conversation from Estate Sale company from back east, and he could not believe what he heard the companies do over there. You basically paid them to clean out your house and if you back out you owe them money my husband was flabbergasted.

We have a nearby company that is a SCAM. Their prices are insane. The rooms messy like what you showed. And, then we found out they have a store front to sell (for their own benefit) what didn't sell. Yup. After 3 visits - because we only saw the sign and didn't connect the dots - until we got there. Boy, oh Boy! What a SCAM. We go out of our way to AVOID them. Thank you for sharing. How sad for the family members of the estate.

What companies do you avoid in the Phoenix area? I've cut way back on how many estate sales I go to. They've all raised their prices to a point where its tough to turn a profit. Thankfully we have so many garage sales every weekend that it isn't a problem finding enough inventory.

  • @FrockSwapShop

    @FrockSwapShop

@SportsRAPP Ugh I avoid Fresh State Estate Sales, Griffin Estate Sales, Estate In Time (they used to be awesome but now everything is a "luxury" item), Anything Blue Moon or Blue Barn (who literally has an Ebay store where they sell items they've ripped off of estates via pricing them too high), and Allergo (who also used to be great but are out of this world nowadays). It doesn't leave many places to go but I work full time and don't have a lot of time to source so I have to be sure I'll find stuff. Also these companies take a beating in the off season and it's fun to watch them wish they had resellers come by but they have burned bridges so badly. Fresh Start especially hates resellers - check out their yelp reviews there the owner gets into fights when people talk about how expensive they are! Haha! I'm thankful for garage sales as well - there truly is plenty of inventory to go around!

I’ve identified a couple of the scam estate sale companies in my area. One, for example, had tons of sealed DVD and Blu Rays, including rare stuff worth money. They had a sign on the wall, DVDs $4 each. I grab like a stack of like 40 DVDs. Get to the checkout and they claim their sign meant $4 per DVD in the case. Season 1 of a show with 5 DVDs? They wanted $20. Ended up putting majority of them away and walked away with like the 5 most valuable and talked them down on the price a little.

@@theblindph0t0grapher Yeah, at my sale, $4 per DVD was rough, even with stuff new and sealed. A lot of the stuff was worth like $20 sealed, so at $4, it was a good pickup but at $20, it was a no thanks. Ended up spending like $50 in total for like 4 or 5. Made about $200-$300 because I only grabbed the stuff I absolutely knew was worth it.

This is why when liquidating it’s ALWAYS better to go with an auctioneer and not an estate sale company. In most states auctioneers are licensed and bonded and heavily regulated by the state. Anyone on any day can be an estate seller. Most auctions are online now instead of in person but it’s always better to deal with a licensed bonded and trained professional than a fly by night anybody.

Fortunately most of the estate companies around here put on clean and organized sales. One company does have trashy sales, however, they cater to the low value estates so they just say pick out stuff and bring it here for a price. (sometimes good deals!) I have asked all of the regular estate sale companies here - What happens to the items not sold? - They all give one of the following answers: 1. We have a buyer who will clear everything for an agreed price. (Of course that could be Uncle Guido with a Mercedes from the old country) 2. The left-overs go back to the family. The absolute best estate sales are run by family members of grandpa and grandma. They always seem to give good deals and I would bet that those family members actually get more money than hiring a professional company.

There is at least one company in my area that does this. Every estate sale is super high, and their business model is to guarantee the client that they will buy and clean out anything left so the client "don't get stuck with dealing with it" (at pennies on the dollar). They own an antique market that they sell most of it through.

Experienced this as well! The companies overprice the items so they can keep it for themselves and re-sell the items. We even had one worker take the items she wanted for herself, before the sale began and put them all in a bag behind her! She had no shame in doing that. When we asked about those items she said "was holding for someone" - mind you there was no customer and we were first in line, so knew she was lying. Gosh this company did not even organize anything. Just disgusting.

Been doing this 22 years, you need a HUGE net to make it these days, by that I mean you need to be able to know what makes something valuable across the board. Used to be able to specialize. Also Boomers are dying so give priority to everyday stuff not "collectibles". Target what the current 30-50 year olds grew up with. Always be learning, always. I pull my phone out and randomly look things up throughout the day even when I'm not out buying. Women will buy jewelry and purses even when the economy sucks.

I cleaned up at that sale, picked up a bunch of anime dvds and manga in those boxes in the basement. I was there on day one and I picked up 79 items for $40 and have already sold several of the dvds for anywhere from $35-100 each and some of the books for up to $45. I agree, the stuff they had priced individually was way over priced, but on the stuff they hadn't had time to look at and had just left thrown in those boxes I made out like a bandit!

Wow, they want way too much money for all of that used stuff. There was a big local estate sale at a very large mansion-like house some years back. Old house, needed lots of work and they wanted like $750,000 for it, I think. Lots of rooms upstairs and downstairs. It seemed like each week they had more stuff added to the sale from before and this went on for a long time. I think they were using the property to sell other items from other places, as well. Eventually, some kind of local plant nursery or something bought the house that was on the corner of a busy road.

I would have loved to have gone through that box of old Pokémon and yugioh cards I literally gasped so loud when I saw it! Such a shame they’re scamming tho… I get the feeling like the owner has passed and it’s their family trying to make some money

It's like this a lot here in south Florida. Messy. And higher than ebay prices. Waste of time. The other day they wanted 125 for a Wii and 65 for a massage gun I could get in the box on ebay for 39. I managed to buy some vacuum attachments for 10 that I will get 5 or 6x my money for but a joke besides that. 😶

Funny coincidence because I just went to a 2 day estate sale last weekend that did the exact same thing. Some prices were fair but they were the inexpensive items. The high end items were the only ones over priced. Except I managed to find one that they accidentally priced wrong. And when I was about to purchase they wouldn't let me because they found out about their mistake. Long story short I had to paid an additional 110 BUT it was for an item that sells for $1000+. It's so far my best find but I honestly lucked out. If I didn't pay on the spot too they were going to raise the price multiplied by 5. ( they tried too ) ridiculous companies tbh

Hey John, ever thought of starting your own business doing estate sales? With your experience it would be easy and then you could sell the house when you are done selling the contents!

Who woulda known…there’s a scam every where I look now a days. Like the scam when you’re buying storage units and people stock it with expense looking boxes and it sells for 5k and it’s all empty boxes. People don’t know this but all the proceeds go back to the renter of the unit. Easy 5k for empty boxes

I hit this sale on the first day when doors opened found mass anime manga filled a Ikea bag with anime and game guides I made over $500 on a $50 purchase. Everything is negotiable with them. It was a great start to my season it looks like they pulled more out for day 2. The guy who ran this used to be with one of the chain estate sale companies but no longer works for them he's actually a good guy. I went to a sale ran by him a few years back he pointed out something to me he thought would be good for ebay it was a 1947 army japan motorcycle lisence plate made $500 on it.✌

The box of books on the ground had Shonen Jump I bought 30 or so and have sold most. game informer and guides was your potential score they were essentially giving books away I told the cashier I didn't want to pay more than a $1 a book she gave me 100 books for for $50 with a mini vhs camcorder that sold for $100 in 3 days. I look for his sales because pricing is flexible and they consider all offers. The guy told me he was helping a family friend he's apparently under a NC with his former employee. Also those prices on trucks were negotiable you probably could've got a hell of a deal with some negotiations.😉

unfortunately calling them out as "scammers" has unleashed a bunch of uniformed comments. There is always higher priced wow factor eye catcher items at estate sales that's what gets folks out the key is finding the stuff that's a bit more under the radar. Benn watching for years John great work I just have had the opposite experience with this guy than you.

I'm glad you were able to find some things! Honestly, I think both things can be true. You can find good deals on some items but overall, they are scamming the owner of the items. Just my opinion. Appreciate you watching!

Sad but true John, I don't know how anyone could sleep at night doing things like that to their clients, it was nice meeting you at our sale a few weeks ago in Westchester. We strive to be like wade estate liquidators. Nice people and a great company. Ian is a good friend of mine and gave me some advice when we started up last February. There's a right way and a wrong way to do estate sales, and this type of business makes the good ones look bad. Keep up the great work John!

Its too bad that loved ones hiring these companies arent notified what they are really doing. I didn't know about this. Sounds like some families could get together and sue these scammers and put them out of business. The amount of crooks in this world is sad.

I'm an antiques broker by trade. I'm at multiple sales and estate calls weekly. IMO, this actually looks more like a start up company that really doesn't have much of a clue what they are looking at and scan a few things with their phones to come up with unrealistic prices. Again IMO, if they intended to defraud, she would have spent more time meticulously looking at your handful of items and gave you a much higher number after searching on her phone right in front of you. I've been to sales where they literally get hired to do the clean out of the property, and the sale is really just for them to make some side scratch before tossing everything into a 30 yard dumpster. In most instances of that kind, they swing for the fences with the prices, because they have nothing to lose. They're getting paid for the job no matter what.
