I'll admit at first glance it doesn't make sense But then think about it 90% of generes don't need ultra wet reverbs and thus it will ruin all of your mixes outside of this 10 percent of music genres

Great vid! Plenty of VERY useful mixing techniques! When I started, I used to think in terms of "Sounds + FX" --> just adding something "extra" to a sound. Now I'm more seasoned, I think of FX as being something that changes the character of the sound itself, rather than adding something extra on top of it. For instance, reverb on a Rock snare shouldn't sound like a separate reverb effect stuck on top. It should *integrate* with the snare so it *becomes part of* the snare sound. That's what I always aim for. Then there's effects for sweetening the sound (reverbs, delays, etc.) i.e. Putting something into a space using reverb, giving 3D separation by using psychoacoustic cues. I never used to use shorter reverbs in my earlier mixing days, but I discovered you can use them to give dimension and depth to a track. They're less "blurry" than longer plate verbs, and can increase separation of elements by giving your auditory system another way of differentiating between different elements as opposed to just using pan/EQ.

Great lesson. A plugin like fruity delay 3 has a L/R stereo knob that can be used to pan delay to the sides.

My latest production had to much reverb on the piano sounded fine through headphones but bad on Speakers. Easy fix was to blend a dry channel with reverb channel and sounds real good now. I'm pretty good with reverb all round really mastered that over a decade ago.

For the vocal delay trick (sending to two instance of delay which are hard panned left and right), I'm a little confused. You say to duplicate the lead vocal but the duplicate doesn't show up in you DAW. Having two lead vocals would seem a little thick and wondering if you balance the volumes between the two or if that was a mistake and you are sending one lead vocal to the two delays? Seems like a cool trick but I want to be clear on it before I try it.

I use a similar tactic for strings, I want to widen, basically the idea is to change the frequency enough between left and right channels so that they dont clash but not to noticeable. Using delays is one way I have done it but I also had it work by putting a very light reverb left channel and light distortion on the right and the strings sound like they are beside My ears, interesting effect.

So the solution?

Back in the last half of the 20th century, producers and engineers knew how to use reverb to great positive effect. Today’s producers and engineers don’t know how to use reverb. That’s part of why you don’t hear it used so much these days. Also, not too many these days have the ear or ability to use reverb tastefully.
