THIS PROJECT is off the GROUND! (Alaska Backcountry)

Well look who's back! Drox is finally out of school! A few days ago I got a call from my wife. She said, "Drox really wants to spend the weekend with you at the cabin". I knew right then I was in for an adventure. Together, the two of us definitely did some damage to the old shop.
The area in which the work is taking place is 25 ft wide by 25 ft long (give or take). The roof system on this portion is going to be entirely demolished and replaced with a beam and rafter system (like we have in the small cabin). We will start by cleaning out 30 years of accumulated and abandoned clutter. Let's get to work!
Tanya took the weekend off and spent it with the children and grandchildren. You will be meeting some of them this summer. Spending time with them is what life is all about, and spending time with them here in the mountains,,, well, it just doesn't get much better than that! We have 15 of them now so it will be an interesting summer to be sure.
Have a wonderful and peace-filled weekend!

I got the biggest smile when I saw Drox in this video! I loved this one! So many awesome moments. Some had me laughing out loud! Like Drox using the sledgehammer that weighed more than him & closing the mustard bottle against your shirts! I loved that you let Drox lift the old fire extinguisher up out of the snow with the loader and everything else that you teach him. He has a treasure that he may not realize just yet in his relationship with you! It’s wonderful to watch. You’re a good Grandpa!!

Hi! U have a great helper there. Drox acts like he really wants to learn--that's awesome. Stella just loves that boy. She is a great dog. Drox is very lucky to have a grandfather that wants to teach him everything. I use to go with my grandfather & learned a lot from him. He did everything by hand. Didn't believe in a lot of mahines. He had 2-1947 Alex-chambers & did all his plowing after his horse team died. He died at 86 & still was doing his own plowing & working around the farm. Those were the wonderful times I have with him & going camping. Be safe & God Bless.. Phoenix

Great to see Drox and Grandpa together again. The old Confucian saying is so evident in your interaction: tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand. Great to see you helping Drox let his learning come out and experimenting with techniques and tools. My father once said when I was trying to lift a full wheelbarrow after clearing the garden 'Use all your strength'. I was so frustrated when I couldn't until he said that I wasn't using all the strength I had. I said that I was and it went back and forward until my dad said 'But you haven't asked me'. Only when I stood between his arms (he was 6'2") and I was little did we BOTH lift the wheelbarrow. I've never forgotten the lesson and I use that illustration even when I pray. Drox will never forget these days helping Grandpa (Papa) and we are blessed by your openness to share these simple lessons by HOW you do things as well as WHAT you do. Be blessed friend. (PS Sorry I was late in viewing the vid but I was with Laura's family celebrating my mother in law's 80th birthday over the weekend).

Oh, these delightful signs of the arrival of spring! At first, you hear the barely audible murmur of the first streams coming from under the snow, then, one day, as if by a wave of a conductor's baton, all these streams merge into one polyphonic orchestra marking the arrival of spring! A unique feeling of delight that does not lose the sharpness of perception over the years. Regarding the found treasure with Heidelberg beer! Indeed, drinks with a low alcohol content, at temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius, would have to freeze and explode, but!!! - an amazing fact is that while the bottle is in a static state, that is, in a state of complete rest, and the fermentation process continues very slowly, the bottle does not burst even at very low temperatures, but if you knock the bottom of the bottle (provided that it happens in the cold -25-30 C) on the surface of the table, the contents instantly freezes and the bottle explodes in your hands! It's amazing, but a fact! I dare to assume that by tearing the fire station out of the "shackles of ice", you deformed the circumference of the wheel... Watching how you spend time with your grandson is a great pleasure! Children at this age absorb any information like a sponge, so the learning process takes place imperceptibly, unobtrusively and in the form of a game. Drox doesn't even realize how much he is learning at the moment! I would like to be curious: - to what depth does the "permafrost" thaw in your latitude during the summer period? I will look forward to the next episode, and I wish you health, good luck and prosperity!

Good morning Nadezhda. Thank you so much for your comments. I enjoyed reading them. We tasted one of the beers and found it completely flat but with very strong alcohol content. It was interesting to find them unbroken. So unusual. I too love the arrival of the seasons, both summer and winter. I never tire of them. The depth of the permafrost here is something that would require core drilling to determine. The original shop here is on solid gravel and has stood the test of time without any frost jacking at all. So there isn't any frost in that area at all. Thanks so much for being here.

Hello Gale, Tanya and Drox!! I'm late with my comments on this video . . . it has been an arduous week for us. Finally, yesterday - Thursday - our lives suddenly got a LOT better, for which we are very grateful. (Divine intervention!) And, we finally had the opportunity to watch your WONDERFUL video. We both sat and laughed like crazy over the "slap-stick" type interactions between you, Gale and your grandson: Red Plaid shirts, Blue Plaid shirts, brushing your teeth outside with water in your mugs, and on-and-on. Drox, despite his young age, is giving you a run for your money, Gale! He was toe-to-toe with you, matching wit for wit! Watching the two of you, who obviously love each other, a person would think that all is right with the world! And, in spite of the negative garbage bombarding us all, mostly from the east, I believe that positive and grateful energy will ALWAYS win over negativity and evil. You and your family are truly evidence of that. We surely missed your sweet face, Tanya, on this video but your presence is ubiquitous! Who else could have dressed those two "clowns" in matching outfits for the camera?! Last night, before we turned out the lights for the night, Fred and I sat in bed, talking about how truly wonderful our lives have been and how much we have been blessed for the last 16 years. I believe our ability to see the good in our lives is directly related to you-all being a part for the past year. You're teaching all of us who follow your lives how really important gratitude is. And for your gratitude, we are grateful, too. Love to you all! Leslie Ann & Fred

It's nice to be back in the wonderful atmosphere of the channel "This is my Alaska". Every time I say "This is my Alaska", I smile inwardly, because this is my Alaska too - it was, at least once upon a time, mine, .. Every summer, me, at the age of 6-7 years sent to my grandfather in the village. My grandfather was a cabinet maker, and I loved to watch him handle chisels, planers, scribers, and measuring tools. But most of all I adored when my grandfather put a square piece of wood into the spindle of a lathe and with the help of cutters turned it into a figured leg of a future chair. The smell of wood, shavings falling on the floor and an unforgettable atmosphere of being present at the "birth" of a finished wooden product. Grandfather always told something, explained, shared secrets. I was still very young to understand all the nuances - so it seemed to me. 55 years have passed since then, but every time I do something, make, repair, I remember the lessons that my grandfather taught me a long time ago! Drox, more than once, throughout his life, will remember all the little lessons that you teach him! And I am sure that every time a mysterious smile will appear on his face when he mentally remembers his wonderful grandfather!

Drox's smile lights up a room. And the way he beams when he looks at you Gale and talks with you leaves no doubt how much he loves you and loves being with you. Watching the two of you work together and laughing brings back many memories of growing up in my grand father's carpentry shop. He was a master carpenter. And also very dear memories of working carpentry projects with my Daddy. Our last project together was the summer of 2015 when we built the outdoor cat enclosure for my cats that I love the way you love Stella. I had a huge smile on my face when Drox was trying to wield that wrecking hammer. I feel sure that the sledge weighed as much if not more than Drox. But that did not stop him from trying............What did you do with all the junk that you cleared from that room?? I was shocked when the camera opened on the room where you were stacking the new lumber. I hope that you have at least a 40 yard dumpster. Thanks for a video showing the sweet interaction between you and your sweet grandson. Everyone should be fortunate enough to have such a loving grandpa. By the way....what do you grandkids call you???

Gale, Good morning. I didn't get to watch until this morning( Monday) due to work. Its great to see Drox, and how you go about trying to teach him the trades and life lessons. Sure looks like the shop job is going to be quite the undertaking. That said, I have been amazed at what you have accomplished to date. I never knew my Dads parents, and my Moms were older when I was a kid. My father in law had built every house he ever lived in and I really enjoyed working and learning with him. Your going to have quite the helper as he grows older. Cherish every moment with your family while you can. Life throws you curves every once in awhile, and you regret not making time to spend time with the ones you love. God Bless, Pete
