This popular cam is actually a poor value (Akaso EK7000 Review)

Skip to video samples: 2:40 || This is a fake 4K camera that has a lot of positive reviews on Amazon, but it got some of them in a less than honest way. The 1080p video is OK but there are better performers for the cost. Even the same camera (under different brands) is cheaper from other sellers on Amazon!

    I wish I would see this review before purchasing mine. I already own Akaso for a few months and can confirm all the drawbacks the reviewer described. I was suspecting that the image chip has to have lower resolution than the claimed 12 MP and actually this is the only review I found which gives the information of sensor’s native resolution of 4 MP! This explains why the still pictures are really unusable in any condition. After few testing with the video resolutions and sampling frequencies I decided I will just use the standard 1080p with 30 fps. The lag/choppy picture with 4k video is what I noticed as well. Also the image quality in 4k videos was very bad for me as well. PS: I like the remote control on this camera, that is very convenient way to control the camera while on monopod. Thanks for people like this which actually give unbiased review!! THANKS!

  • @AndreBellCopywriter

    @AndreBellCopywriter

    Interesting. I was going to ask if he mis-labeled the two videos in error. @ 3:33 the the video labeled Akaso is clearer than the SJ7 Star video. Can see individual leaves in the brown bushes and can see the railing through the bush for the Akaso. Whereas with the Sj7 that mess is blurry. So I'm guessing he mislabeled the two videos. Otherwise Akaso is the winner in that test. Btw, the SJ7 Star is a $200 action camera. Not $54. The SJ7 costs around four times more than the Akaso. But half as much as a real GoPro. To be honest, after I break or lose my Akaso I'm probably going to buy the SJ3. I like the SJ3's 4K better, wider field of view, and captured colors. For now I see no reason to ever buy a real GoPro. I'm just looking for a b-roll camera to use as a b-roll webcam. Akaso records huge MOV files. No clue if is same for the other cameras.

    MidEast Beast Hey, thanks for the message. The off brand one that is the same camera in different packaging is available here: dreki.tech/h9-gearbest (this is the version without the remote, version with remote is H9r). On Amazon it's listed as "Eken H9" or "Eken H9R", and was $20-30 less when I last checked. The Eken verion has some firmware improvements too but it can't make up for it being a cheap cam overall. Good luck!

    Probably not, he is being straightforward. I set up action cams for folks on bicycles, motorcycles and race cars and have no affinity for any brand, other than those that actually work. GoPro ius fine, but there are other options that actually work. This camera works decently on a fixed platform (bracket on back of a house) to record simple motion video where the background is also staionary and something is moving. Comparing simultaneous video from the EK7000 and even the lower Sony HDR-AS20 side by side with both set to 1080p demionstrates the EK700 records inferior video with a lot of distortion and poor resolution. Once the camera is moving along with the background and anything else the lack of image stabilization is evident. The images are bouncy and unstable. Actual recording resolution and rate is low, 720p / 30 fps or lower. This is using the same borrowed MicroSCHC Extreme card that works in a Sony HDR-AS100V camera in Pro mode and 1080p / 30 fps. The memory card is NOT the problem. The EK7000 is what it is, an under $30 toy, more suited for home use or perhaps a low end dashboard camera. That being said, I don't regret buying one, with a WiFi connection it is adequate for watching and occasionally recording security videos of my backyard.

    Decent still photo quality and a budget camera, check out the SJCam M20, Git2 Pro, generally if the camera features an "IMX 206" sensor it will have better still photos than other cameras. I'm currently working on reviewing some of the new real 4K cams and they have great photos too but they're more expensive - SJCam Star 7 for example.

    I just bought one. Have use it a couple times. Did some POV (held in my mouth) recordings on my skimboard today, and I'm literally going through them now and they look great...the only reason I even came across this video was because I was googling how to downsize the files for easier transfer. I know it's not actually a 4k, but for under $60 dollars, I'm impressed. Im Running the 60fps setting, as well. Perhaps some of the problems are due to the sd card you are using. I read a blog about how some of them will cause some of the issues you described.

    This guy is completely right in some aspects. I bought this camera a week ago to find the same problem as he did but worse. When I tried to record 4k, it filmed rarely but the actual footage was way less than 25fps, more like 3fps. Because of this, I sent it back and just thought it was that camera until I decided to buy it again and had the exact same problem. I couldn't shoot at 2.7k or 4k. Ik I'm probably not going to use the 4k but it's nice to know u have it there. But in my case, I literally just have the 1080p which isn't half bad.

    No, the H9R is the generic of this Akaso EK7000; there are different grades of the H9R even, and the Akaso appears to be one of the lower ones because there is frame loss in 60FPS modes. I think it is stuck to 48FPS in a 60FPS file because every sixth frame is doubled or so... :/

    My opinion on your review is that you haven't really given this camera a chance. The other two cameras you mention don't even have any customer reviews (esp. Amazon). I've been using the Akaso EK7000 for a couple of weeks now and the only issue I have is that my iPhone keeps dropping the signal from the camera. I suspect that the phone favors the house 5G wifi. Otherwise, I didn't have any problems out in the field. The video is great and the photos are decent. They don't compare to my Nikon dslr, but the whole point of purchasing the Akaso was for the action cam without dumping a whole lot of money into a GoPro.

    I have the AKASO EK7000 and it gave me a fit for the first week i owned it and didn't realize I got a faulty battery until I switched out the battery for a fresh one and the camera preformed perfect for 1080P ( 30 fps) HD. The faulty battery I drained it completely down for 5 minutes and then put it in the charging block and charged it back up and the battery is working okay now. I read it somewhere or somebody had said to kill the battery all the way dead and then recharge them but that was after I found out myself one of the two batteries needed that done to it before it would work properly? The EK7000 takes beautiful photos shots and video footage if you do some trial videos in all the different exposure and resolution setting. Trial and error setting on a Sunny day, then a different setting for an overcast day and do one in the evening in low light till you learn the right setting for the best photos and videos. No I didn't get the free accessories for doing a 5 star rating on Amazon or YT either, In fact i gave it a poor rating before i found out that the faulty battery was causing all the problems and had to delete the bad rating review on Amazon.

    So I'd ordered based on the positive reviews, then saw yours and cancelled my Amazon order. Cancelllation went through and I'll now look around again - do more research before making a purchasing decision. Thanks for giving the review ... I'm sure a lot of people are hapy with the camera, and I'm sure some are not .. in the end the idea of offering a prize for a good review is what put me off. I work for a consumer insight startup and our biggest selling factor is that our merchants ratings are made by real customers, gving their real thoughts ... not false reviews or encouraged 'positive' reviews.

Just got Akaso for Christmas and since yesterday I have watched several youtube videos comparing it to other cameras plus I did a bit of testing it myself...I reckon you work for gopro because I cant find anything wrong with Akaso...and I have used other photo or recording devices in the past. Akaso is good and comparing the price at quarter what you pay for gopro...well the choice is simple i think

    I like your honest review, too bad many people still don't get it that what poor value means, most of them are probably the akaso owners and I have to say that please don't compare this with gopro which is way more expensive, try comparing it to other cameras within the price range and you will find many other better equipped cameras around, this is why he mentioned poor value in stead of poor quality action cam and yes this camera is capable, but why pay more if you can get a better one with the same price range, so please do your research especially for these two very important aspect for good action cameras: 1. Chipset (if you want native 4k, go for ambarella, native 2k go for novatech 96660, only fhd then sunplus or allwinner) 2. Image sensors (most Sony chipsets are quite good compared to sensors like omnivision ...) You guys can check the forum dashcamtalk where they listed all fake 4k chipsets and sensors, so do more research and try comparing each video quality on several KZread channel, and also try to compare prices in different website like gearbest, banggood, or aliexpress in order to locate the exact price range of the action cam you wanted, lastly many action cams are exactly the same but you will find them in different brand names and with different prices, so beware about this!

    Bass Matters Hey there, if you're happy with the video quality that's the important part. The corruption issue is likely your memory card. Have you tried another card? If you bought a cheap memory card it might not be the size the vendor said, so it can't save files properly. These fake cards are all over Amazon, eBay, Chinese Vendors... Even sometimes disguised as real brands (even sometimes they make their way into box stores).

    Bass Matters Also with this cam try to only film in 1080p60 / 1080p30. My Video editing program doesn't like the 2.7k/4k because it is MJPG codec. Besides there's no real resolution advantage to using those modes since the sensor is only 2.7k capable (4MP). You're less likely to have corrupted files at 1080p modes

    Good review and seems very fair. However, the recommended Dazzne 1080p camera will not do 1080p at 60 fps. It would be interesting to see how the 720p 60fps video looks compared to the Akaso 1080p 60fps. Professional content 720p looks great on 70"+ big screen TVs, so why even go to 1080p or 4k if the quality is there. Neither the Dazzne or the Soocoo includes a wrist remote. It would appear that this camera is fine for 1080p 60fps shooting and offers the wifi wrist remote at a similar price to the recommendations. I would be interested to hear of a better choice that includes the remote. When using a helmet mount, I imagine the remote is essential, assuming you can tell if the camera is recording by looking at the remote. Also, the water proof case was not reviewed. There are 2 basic designs of H20 cases (one with a latch that appears far better), and a review would be helpful. Nothing worse then 80ft under water and the camera case opens up.

  • @DrekiTech

    @DrekiTech

    6 жыл бұрын

    robert2steven The SooCoo C30R is the version with the remote. It has the case with the additional latch while the EK7000 does not. I've not tested either design below 15 feet of depth so I can't comment on either style. But there is different qualities of the cases even beyond the two styles. The original Dazzne P2 is not 1080p60 but I recommended the P2+ which is 1080p60/2k30. It looks like the P2+ version is no longer available on Amazon, unfortunately. It was a good deal while it was available. Thanks for pointing that out.

    most cheap or budget action cams are daytime only shooters...thats pretty common knowledge at this point..some very good points are shown in this footage but the comparison to the SJ7 Star at the seafood restaurant shows the akaso as the winner in my opinion..look at the cement stairs and the wood planks...just something i noticed and wanted to point out.

  • @DrekiTech

    @DrekiTech

    6 жыл бұрын

    Oversharpening doesn't add detail. If I applied a sharpening filter to the SJ7 it would look more like the Akaso. I made the mistake of assuming that everyone here uses a big 4K screen; on a small screen the EK7K footage looks 'more detailed' because it is way over-sharpened. You can see halos around some of the objects from the sharpening. When downsized to 1080p the Akaso does a good job of faking 4K, but in reality it is using MJPG (over-compressed), a lower frame rate (not smooth), and a sensor that is only 4MP, so it'll never be as good as the real thing. On a 1080p screen the difference won't be noticeable since youtube scales down the video. More info on how this camera fakes 4K here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJyVuJmQiZnfpsY.html

    I'm going to assume that you only tested one AKASO EK7000 camera? I've seen at least 1/2 dozen other videos here with footage of it that blow your footage away in image quality. I'm not saying that the particular model you used was good. It was already faulty which should've automatically disqualified it from being used as a standard for the review. Maybe if you had used a properly working example, your images would've been as good as the others that are all over KZread (which is probably why it's gotten so many good reviews). Nobody in their right mind is going to expect GoPro quality from an $80 camera and the overwhelming majority of those buying it aren't going to post their images on a computer then go over them with a magnifying glass to nitpick what's not there that they have to blow up on a screen to even realize (just like you suggested). I'd suggest to anybody if you you want to take still pics, get the right camera. If you want 4K, get a 4K camera. If you want to make Oscar winning film footage, get the appropriate camera. But for cryin' out loud, don't wring your hands over a sub-$100 entry level budget action cam! LOL That being said, all your criticisms pretty much were shut down by your own footage which was darn good despite you knowing using a faulty example. :) I'd love to see a side-by-side split screen comparison of the cameras that you say are better (not just hear the specs). I think images speak louder than words and opinions. But man, even with that lousy camera, you had some nice shots in there. Imagine how much better they would've been if you had actually used a working model of the AKASO. Want to complain that you got a lemon? Fine. Do that, but as a reviewer, you should know that you don't compare a complete model line by the bad examples which all manufacturers produce from 50 dollar cams to cams costing thousands. I completely agree with you posting that it sucked right out of the box, but you should've sent it back for a working model, then tested the working model. JMHO

    Yankee Fair opinion. I've tested several cams based on the SPAC6350 processor before and this is, in general, the result from them so I wouldn't expect much improvement with another copy of the camera. It's clear you have some knowledge of these devices so when you see it advertised as 12MP & "4K capable" you can be skeptical and understand that you might not actually be getting those specs. However the average consumer might not know better, so my goal is to point out how misadvertised this cam is especially when at this price point it is possible to get cams with real 12MP sensors and other useful features like Gyro stabilization. Were the EK7000 advertised as a 1080p60 cam, my opinion of it would have been higher as it does that fairly well... It just doesn't do much else well, which makes it not the best value at the price point. Thanks for your comments and your 2¢ though, I'll be sure to include more comparison footage in future reviews.

    Pretty much most of these budget action cams are coming out of the same factory with only sensors and other minor bits being changed (that being reflected in the pricing). I appreciate you trying to educate the consumer, I really do. However, in fairness to the company (any company) you are reviewing, I just think that you should've used a model that at least started right out of the box. At the same time, you shouldn't have gotten a faulty model in the first place because we don't pay for faulty stuff. That error is definitely on the company. But I'm sure they would've done right by you if they were given the opportunity. And I COMPLETELY agree with the advertising on these products. You're 100% correct there as well. Carry on. Good work.

    I don't see any problem with the review. They claim it's 4k, he calls them out on not being 4k... He did show footage comparing it to others like you said. Also if the quality control is that bad, it's probably a good representation of the risk others might be taking buying it. Idk why if you got a laggy camer that you would assume that it's a "lemon". If he did what you said he'd get so much crap about being "biased". Lol
