If it's a explosive shell it might be just the projectile if it was naval gun caliber. As these shells used no brass casing but a bag of explosives too fire it from the gun. Cast iron shells packed with high explosive! Smaller caliber guns used a brass casing, like a modern bullet. Both are deadly and some are gas shells! From the image I can't make out if it is a shell, it could be a mortar round. There's also a unexploded mine in Flanders and it has enough high explosive to blow football fields of land away. It did not detonate as it was meant to under German lines. Imagine that?

And more amazing is that seems like you "walk a mile in their shoes" and know to tell the events as actually lived. You are a great speaker and thank you for your great videos! (almost feel like you are and empath, or have just great empathy?) I love your stories as dark and misterious... But also because I get to learn from other's mistakes, safely. Thank you!

Very well said!!! I've been watching the channel for a good amount of time now. I forget exactly when I began, but it was definitely before MrBallen had 1 million subscribers. I still find his storytelling style refreshing, and amongst the best out there, definitely!! I'm rewatching a few videos now, as I can't sleep. I was lucky I was patient long enough to save up a few of his newest episodes, and I binged a few tonight. I've got a couple I'm keeping in my back pocket for a rainy day though, lol. Yes, I think John's lively past gives him a unique take on storytelling, and life!! My Grandpa was a FANTASTIC storyteller (born in 1903)!! So, have a massive interest, and respect for others out there with the talent as well!! My Mom was great with reading us books with character and feeling when I was young too. It all helped make me a voracious reader, who was well equipped to spin yarns for the kids when they were little. I'm SO happy I was a huge part of passing down the invaluable gift of storytelling to my Nephew, Niece, etc!!We as a civilization have kept the tradition alive since time unknown for a reason, : D ! Many, in fact. I also find a story told from a place of great interest, research when possible, and most importantly, empathy (when based on real life emotional events), is something special!! My Grandpa lived such an interesting life, a hard life, but well lived. It made for some fascinating listening, and equipped me with a very healthy respect for the suffering, and joy of others. It's a much more important, and noble craft than many realize. I hope you continue to carve out time for yourself to enjoy it, and to possibly prevent similar unfortunate circumstances in our own lives is a wonderful reason to tune in as well, I agree!! Take Care, Amanda H.

That first story is my biggest fear... ever since getting severely injured in a car accident, all I think of is how things can go wrong and you can do everything right, but it might not be enough. That poor family, they just wanted to camp and celebrate. And she lost her brother, which is unfathomable. My brother and I are really close, too, so that just broke me.

Mr Ballen, I'm wondering if you would tell us all the difference between an Ex-Pat and an immigrant, besides the color of their skin? 1:36 The reason I ask is I've noticed when I go to Mexico, all the white people who've moved there call themselves Ex-Pats, but when Mexicans move here we call them immigrants. I'm interested in anyone's opinion on this, but would really appreciate a response from Mr Ballen, since he has used both terms on your channel. Thanks

It's better than a TV show to me. I'm totally focused on his every word, he must have some Native American in him, you know, because that's how they kept their history was through stories passed down from generation to generation. I'd love to go camping with him just to hear his best stories around the campfire. lol

I often listen to podcasts and such when working in the kitchen, and some of what I listen to annoys the crap out of my adult son (he hates anything to do with politics). Yesterday, I turned on my bluetooth speaker and he left the room, but the minute he heard MrBallen's voice he came right back, and sat on the couch riveted to the end! It was the one about the Navy airman doing the "Superman" stunt from the airplane. My son was an aircraft repair tech in the Navy, and he hated it when others clowned on the job so that story got to him.

Yeah. I dare say, this was probably the most heartwrenching of MrBallen´s stories so far. The horror. Looking at the design of the trench, it was probably a german trench, and I am german, so, I don´t know, thinking that probably the german imperial Reichswehr left the bloody shell there doesn´t make it any better. They had absolutely no business in this place, whatsoever. WW I tragedy continuing to this day. Terrible, to think, you are newly wed, and you have this beautiful trip with friends and family, and are really, truly happy, and BÄM- gone, everything gone. Terrible.

Hey Mr. Ballen, I've been watching your vids for about two months now. I'm going through a very difficult time, I'm unemployed and due to some medical issues I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to work again and, not too far from now I might be on the streets, again. (I spent ten years hardcore homeless, sleeping on park benches and heating grates while strung out on heroin. Here I got myself together and my body starts falling apart.) Anyway, I just want you to know that a) your videos have really helped me, even if it was just passing time while I'm laying here, often hungry and not knowing when I'll get to eat again, and b) you really inspire me, especially this collaboration thing. I've always been in awe of Navy Seals bc of what you guys endure just to BECOME one, let alone your missions. But you seem like the type of guy that's a rarity in that particular subset, your clearly very humble and concerned with not only the environment but humanity in general. So thanks for all you do, and I promise that IF and when I DO get back to work, this charity will be added to my list. Rock on man!
