This Hyper-Detailed Painting Uncovered A Tragic Illness
This piece is called Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele by Jan van Eyck. Joris van der Paele was a wealthy canon of St Donatian Church in Bruges and the man who commissioned this painting. He was very rich but very unwell and thought he was going to die and so he hoped that in creating this painting he could keep his soul alive forever in heaven.
We’re placed in a church with Mary, baby Jesus, St. Donatian, St. George and Joris van der Paele (and a parakeet). Van der Paele appears to have been praying just moments ago. Perhaps the scene before us depicts a vision that came to the Canon during one of his prayer sessions. He likely created this painting also as a sort of medical certificate to excuse him from his duties at church that he was unable to carry out due to his ill health.
Jan van Eyck has injected so much detail in this painting that doctors today have been able to diagnose the canons exact ailments: polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis. I hope you all love looking at all of the amazing detail in this painting like I do. Thanks for watching!

I like when artists paint themselves in reflections in their paintings. It’s a fun detail.

You know …. I’ve looked at this painting many times over the years and never saw Van Eyck’s self portrait in the reflection. His paintings never cease to amaze me.

I love your videos but I've never felt such a personal bond to a painting before. I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) 7 years ago, but thanks to modern steroid treatment I'm now free of both conditions. So I can empathise with the intense pain, fatigue and immobility that Joris van der Paele suffered every day. Of course he could afford the most expensive medical treatment of the day, but it was probably so useless he would have been better off without it.

Thats amazing. As someone who suffers from chronic pain l can guess how debilitating it was. I'm so glad you got relief and an actual cure.
van Eyck is more than a master artist; he was a freaking genius.
The "cloth" that you describe as protecting the book is actually a leather cover that is folded around the book and extends beyond the book to form a bag-like structure to.protect it. It is also used to hang the book from a belt. You can see examples in museums and other paintings.
The detail is insane. The description was fabulous and insightful
One afternoon (about a year ago) I was watching one of your videos and my youngest kiddos came to join me. They ended up being hooked and are now so excited when they see copies of art that they recognize from your channel. It's like a scavenger hunt when we visit art museums or any place with hanging art.😊

Thank you for posting these videos! You've made art history accessible for those of us who don't have the time, knowledge, or resources to properly dig in.
I love this narrator. Her dry humor and detailing the story behind the paintings is fascinating and entertaining. I'm so happy to have come across this channel.
Painfully detailed is a good description-
You made me realize how much stories are reflected in art. Love your videos and I wish there was more content like this on KZread.
As you point out - the detail is insane! The chainmail is so photo-realistic or should that be hyperrealistic? Once again a brilliant art lesson! 🙂
@Art_Deco

Thank you so much! I totally think you could say photorealistic! In fact it’s believed Jan van Eyck used a camera obscura (an ancestor of the camera) to create his super detailed masterpieces. Happy Saturday my friend!

He takes off his glasses because they are reading glasses. He doesn’t need them to look up at a person. Otherwise, well done, Art Deco!

The detail of this painting is amazing. Thanks for this post.
I love van Eyck, he was a true genius of his time! His paintings are so detailed, beautiful and alive! Thanks again for your great and amusing videos!
Thankyou for mentioning the heraldry. It’s an obscure subject so often overlooked.

Love this channel. I've learned so much with each video. Not sure how long you research each painting, but you provide great insight that helps me to a deeper level of understanding. Thank you for this video. I look forward to each one.
Jan van Eyck is probably one of my favorite artists from this period. They had so many little 'easter eggs' and the paintings make you feel like you're almost in the painting and observing what's going on.
This is like commissioned self-insert bible fanfiction. “Omg Mary! You caught me right in the middle of reading about how pretty you are UwU”
1:29 also a parrot, it's an Indian ringneck parakeet to be specific,.which is a type of parrot, just like budgies/parakeets, just very smol parrots

I've found myself seeking out details on paintings and observing them in a way that I'd never even notice before! Thank you!
I love how you “break down” the paintings!
Iused to not be into paintings , but gain more interest everytime I watch your videos. So many things are missed until you point them out ..please keep making the vids ❤️❤️
I love your delivery and editing
Great video, with ALL the details, and no unnecessary music!
I love this painting and I love Van Eyck. I’ve even seen it in person but I never knew it’s backstory so thank you for making this video!
Brilliant. I love that this was detailed enough to diagnose a medical condition. I remember seeing one painting where the puckering on a woman's breast showed she had the early stages of breast cancer. Sadly, l can't remember which painting it was.
I love this channel so much every time. I love learning about paintings because of this channel.
Another briliant video! I can hardly wait for each one!

You are an amazing tour guide. Thank you. You help me see things, I would have easily missed.
I enjoy your videos so much that I actually recommended this channel just this morning, before I found this new one. Many thanks.
The depiction of the carpet, the hanging behind the Virgin is extraordinary…the entire painting is a tour de force. Always fascinated by this painting even as a child…there’s so much to see. It has even more meaning since I’ve spent over 20 years disabled by multiple autoimmune and neurological disorders. The treatments are better than he would have had but still very mixed in the results.
Van Eyck's paintings take my breath away.
I'm not an artist, but I love art. I love when you post because I feel like I am learning and you make it entertaining. I love to hear about the story of the painting, the meaning, the detail, the colors, the artist, etc...
What a gift, to be able to restore a man's reputation with a painting!
Mysterious illness, detailed painting, talented artist, and revolutionary medical knowledge surprisingly goes well with each other and also feel like a thriller mystery story.
I always look forward to these videos ! I’ve learned so much about art and history ❤
What a treat it is to pop open the laptop and see that you have posted a new video! This one was just as interesting as all the other ones you've made. I don't think I have seen this painting before. Or, at least not that I can remember very clearly. There are pieces of it that feels familiar, but I can't really discern if it's because I have seen this beautiful painting before or just me mixing up this one with some other piece of art from this time period/in this style. Nevertheless, it's a gorgeous painting and your commentary is just fantastic! This really is one of my absolute favorite channels on all of KZread.

Van Eyck. Always a thumbs up!
The detail & quality of work is amazing.
On the rarity of parakeets- Flanders would have been a part of the Hanseatic League at the time. Ports would have farily regularly experienced ships coming back with trade from the Mediterranean with all sorts of exotic goods, including those from the Holy Land. It must have been spectacular for an artist to go down to the docks and see what new things you could see and use as new models. It's why you have things like monkeys showing up in Brueghel's paintings, with the port in the background.
"Morning Stiffness" I can relate.
You make every painting so informative & interesting. I thank you!👍✌️
i told my mom about your channel when i first found it like last year
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos ❤❤❤
The bird is a rose-ringed parakeet (ringneck parrot), originally from the Indian continent and parts of Africa. 😊
I love the historical context and the absolute examination of the metatexual meanings in the paintings. With a nice dry humor.
Your videos inspire me to keep creating art!
You make paintings fun! Thank You!
Without your commentary, I don't believe I would have noticed a contrast between the realistic depiction of Paele and the more idealized, or romantic, presentation of Mary and Baby Jesus. The detailed depiction of Paele really stands out to me now as somewhat apart from the the other figures.
This painting is one of the most amazing things to behold. You can stare at it for hours and still discover new details. I went to Bruges last year and it was the most amazing experience I had in the city (and that means a lot). :)
I have admired Jan van Eyck since I was a young art student standing in front of the spectacular Arnolfini wedding portrait in the National Gallery, London.. (I loved your presentation of that portrait too!) I wish we had more facts about this revolutionary genius! So little is known about Van Eyck's early life and neither the date nor place of his birth is documented.. and yet he has always been a huge inspiration to me! Thank you for this exceptional video.. 👏👌
Fascinating!
Always such fascinating insights into these paintings of long ago.. Excellent research and narration.. always with a touch of humour! Perfect.. thank you! 👍👌🙋🏻♀️
A winner once again! Was that “St.Donations” :-) church? I love the detail not only in the painting but equally in your excellent, intelligent yet humorous videos. Keep it up! Best wishes from and amateur Scottish artist.
This is perfection!
Van Eyck is the damn GOAT
This is one of my favorite paintings. Good job on the presentation. I will say though, that many books from this time period had cloth attached to the cover, so that you could wrap the book in the cloth when not in use. They didn't survive the centuries though, many of those books were rebound later on.
Incredible
Thank you, very much another awesome video
Keep up the great work! Love your videos
I love when a painting makes you feel like you could talk to these people... Even tho one is in armor and it was painted in the medieval/renaissance transition, more than 500 years ago
For anyone visiting Bruges there's a whole museum dedicated the making of this painting. Really awesome
Thank you for this humorous analysis.
Great stuff!

The diagnosis of giant cell arteritis is plausible. The prominent blood vessels over his temples would be hardened, nodular, tender and pulseless arteries, not veins. He would have suffered from headaches, scalp tenderness, shoulder girdle pain and generalised muscular pain and stiffness, especially after waking. He may have had jaw claudication making it painful to chew his food. Without treatment there is a high risk of sudden blindness, but GCA isn’t fatal and he would have eventually recovered, though any sight loss would be permanent. Steroids would have relieved his symptoms in 24 hours had they been available.
