This Opal Made Two Miners RICH INSTANTLY! Here's Why

In this video, I take a 210 ct parcel of Coober Pedy opal and cut the entire group into cabochons. I discuss techniques to help people learn how to cut opal and give basic information about things that people dealing with opal and other jewelry should no. There is no black opal in this video.A new machine for "mechanized" grinding is introduced.

The Coober Pedy opal has it's own beauty. Aussie here. I've been under ground at Lightning Ridge chasing the black opal. It's very addictive once you find a little. The devoted opal miners are a unique breed of Australian. Nice job here cutting these gems.

I'm with you on this. Sometimes symmetry of shape is absolutely the best approach but if you're presented with a fabulous stone that has wonderful colour in a less than symmetrical way, surely good judgement must sometimes suggest that letting the stone _speak for itself_ may be the way to go. Just like using excessive embellishment in the setting. Australian opal, and a lot of Ethiopian opal have such wonderful play of colour that distracting from their personality by excessively framing it in too much sparkle, or twirly bits, or adding faceted gems in the setting downplays the opal that is the centrepiece.

@@PulitzerOpal i would have separated the pinfire section before shaping the stone. Maybe could have gone for a main stone with the better pattern and a matched pair for ear rings cut from the same stone. Could maybe have got close to 25 carat king + 2 x 5 carat ear ring stones if the cut were made before shaping with the set having similar value to a larger king stone alone. Big stones are of course rare but matched sets cut from a single stone are at least equally rare and make incredibly saleable finished pieces.

I used to manage a Weissfield's Jewelers store. Far and away, my favorite gemstone was opal. Anyone with a regular and unfancy microscope will want to try this... Set your opal and focus on the top. That's a spectacular enough. Then, focus down into the stone till you will see an entirely different dimension and pattern. Then go deeper. You'll see when to stop as you are now seeing refractive light from inside the stone and not just the surface. It's like looking through a 10-story building from the top floor by floor. Absolutely mesmerizing.

Tip for getting that perfect dome shape in your stone and avoiding imperfections. Isolate the reflection of the lightbulb in the stone. The imperfections or flat places will be easily seen as it will distort the reflection. Use this tip when sanding and polishing all of your stones.

My son & I much enjoyed this video .I- 57 was raised in Fla spent Hours a day hunting shark teeth fossils at open shell pits used for grading roads. We would love to visit Australia & hunt for opal &.polishing & finishing would be the icing on that cake.

I've done some simple cutting of Opal, had some nice color, for the money. Always like looking at the Opal people are wearing. But, WOW, the fire in this stone, along with the brilliant flashes of blue, yellow and green, make me want to dust off the bench and take on a flat, sand covered piece my dad picked up about 30 years ago but never cut.
