Kerri actually made the Olympic team. However, the U.S. pulled out of the Olympics that year. That’s why he said “Sorry it didn’t work out.”

After seeing the movie for the first time Kevin said that one of the things that he didn't like about the movie was the depiction of his father Fritz. He understood that the movie had to have some sort of antagonist in it for the story, but Kevin does not blame his father for the deaths of his brothers. He blames it on the illnesses, the accidents and most importantly the substance abuse/drug addictions more than anything in the deaths of the brothers who took their own lives. Kerry to this day calls his dad "a decent and honorable man." Kerry's eldest daughter also called her grandfather "a very loving man." Fritz's wife however did blame him for the deaths of her boys and would ultimately divorce him after the death of the youngest Chris who omitted from the film. I think that Kevin is probably choosing to remember his father better than his father deserves, but the movie may have made him appear worse than he was.

Dottie also left Fritz in '92. She wanted nothing to do with his ass anymore. Fritz died in '97 I believe, and Dottie passed in 2015 I think.

They had a 6th brother called Chris, who also committed suicide in '91, five of the six brothers have died, three of them putting themselves to rest, may all of them rest in peace. Great reaction, love ya'll.

The story was actually worse. They had another brother, Chris, that also committed suicide. The timeline wasn't quite accurate, either. Could you imagine how much it cost to feed that family of 5 male athletes?! Also the wigs look so bad because the hair we had in the 80's was terrible, lol. My favorite wrestlers as a kid. Loved this movie so much.

Long comment alert: With a lot of films that are based on true events there are a lot of inaccuracies, omitted facts and the story is often condensed for time. Here are a few things I noticed that aren't accurate or just not shown in the movie other than the youngest brother Chris not being in it all: 1) Fritz like Kerry was also a champion discus thrower and almost went to the Olympics himself. According to Kevin had Fritz been able to go and matched his best recorded throw he would've won gold. The reason he wasn't able to go was that he couldn't pay for the trip himself and the AAU wouldn't cover his expenses because Fritz had gotten married. Fritz also once held the Texas High School discus throwing record. He held it for many years, and it was his son Kerry who broke it. 2) David was actually the first brother to begin pro-wrestling full time. Kevin did start first, but he only did it part time while he was in college, initially. Kevin was on a football scholarship so would only wrestle during the offseason, and it was his dream to make the NFL. Kevin got a knee injury that ended his ability to play football and then he turned to pro-wrestling full time. 3) David was married to his second wife at the time of his death. His first marriage had ended when their first child a daughter died from SIDS 13-weeks after being born. 4) There was no waiting your turn for world championship matches. All the brothers had a shot at one time or another. In fact, it was interference from the Freebirds during a world title match for Kerry that kicked off the Von Erich vs. Freebird rivalry shown in the movie. 5) Mike had begun wrestling before David's death, and according to Kevin he was a much better athlete than he gets credit for, but just wasn't as skilled as the other brothers in the ring. 6) Kerry's accident where he lost his foot happened a couple of years after he won the world title from Ric Flair. He only held the title for 18 days before losing it back to Flair. The NWA didn't trust Kerry with the belt as he had missed some shows, he was supposed to wrestle on due to his substance abuse issues. He was only given the title as a favor to Fritz and the family after David had died. The mother was also at the show to see Kerry win the title and not at home watching it on TV. She celebrated with Kerry on the show after the match. 7) Kevin "losing his cool" and attacking Ric Flair during their world title match happened a couple of years after David's death and it was planned finish of the match. He was scripted to get disqualified, he didn't just go crazy in the ring. 8) Fritz and a business partner were the ones that sold their wrestling promotion to Jerry Jarrett. Kevin and Kerry who owned a minority stock in the company were against it, and I believe Kevin even tried to sue to stop the sale. 9) Kevin and his wife had two daughters before they had their two sons. 10) One of Kerry's daughters became a pro-wrestler as well and was known as Lacey Von Erich. She retired after only a few years, and Kevin's two boys are currently in pro-wrestlers, and they also use the Von Erich name. 11) The two wrestlers being depicted wrestling Kevin and David in David's debut match were wrestlers named Bruiser Brody and Gino Hernandez. They too would die tragically at a young age. Gino would die at the age of 28 to a drug overdose. Brody was stabbed to death by a fellow wrestler in the locker room shower during a show while working in Puerto Rico for a different wrestling promotion at the age of 42 over a business dispute.

regarding point "7)": I think in the movie it was the planned finish aswell, just done in a misleading way where you're supposed to doubt that things are going according to script...I interpreted the locker room scene after as Fritz, Kerry and Ric being just suprised by his performance (Ric like "damn this was goood...didn't *think* you had it in you, kid" and Fritz and Kerry more like "wow son/brother, I didn't *know* you had it in you...this didn't feel like "you", are you alright?") And I think an important point I think you should've mentioned that went over most people's head that don't know the family or the wrestling business...so: 12) No kid in the family was ever *forced* into becoming a wrestler, none of them ever blamed wrestling for the tragedies that happened, and thus none of them ever hated wrestling. While I understand that it might come across this way to ignorant eyes, "wrestling" is not the villain in this story...it's the world where the story takes place. Wrestling is part of their family DNA, just like God in the life of a christian (as Kevin literally equated the two in the beginning of the movie)...many of the kids had different dreams at the start but for one reason or another they all ended up *choosing* wrestling as their fate. For Kerry, while his first choice wasn't wrestling, when his first choice was made unobtainable wrestling was the easy and obvious 2nd pick...and I would bet my left nut on that if Kerry had gone to the olympics, winning a medal or not, he would've transitioned into wrestling right after his olympic career anyway

I think either the director or producer of this emotional film asked Zack E not to cry until that last scene where he lets it flow! Concussion's have a horrible effect on the brains of athletes who get them. Wrestlers had to have suffered many. Will Smith is in a movie called Concussion that I really recommend watching, especially for parents! I'd love to explain but I would just babble on and my thumbs would get tired.

I never grew up into wrestling or had any awareness about the Von Erich family story but this film hits hard in the feels. I know that it can't be all the way accurate with its times, dates, sequenced events, what have you, because movies just aren't often conducive to telling whole family stories like this in a couple hours, but I thought it was a sad thing that this film and Zac Efron didn't find some real nominations from the Golden Globes or Oscars for his performance. I would've never believed he could pull off a dramatic role with such finesse and discipline having mostly known him for comedies, but it goes to show that talent is talent. t's also a sad indictment of the real industry work that studios have to literally allot finite resources to lobby their films to these award shows to be considered for them, rather than movies being fairly judged on their own merits, and A24 having suffered a bad series of financial returns (even if they stay keeping a certified quality brand of flicks they put out) meant they could only push for their other film, Past Lives (which I personally loved), to be lobbied for the major awards even if they wanted to do the same for Iron Claw. It's not a fair shake so everyone should know that these Oscars, Globes, all that is mostly predicated on major industry people lobbying other major industry people to give them a whole prestige than good movies, good performances, and good anything else being rewarded for being good on their own. Sorry for the essay-like post but I had to share that passive frustration that this film, even if it had a small budget, was absolutely well done in every single way, and not being considered for major awards sometimes comes with the business. I live here in LA and work within the industry so it's a perpetual irk. I love that I discovered your channel and I can't wait to look out for more between tapping in your other uploads! Thank you both for the wonderful reaction!
