One aspect of lowering the brake value for a special session is, forgetting to set it back might be bad during a later flight. Air pilots use checklists, line by line, but do drone pilots practise that discipline? How many drone pilots have made and read home made checklists? I don't think there are too many doing it.... A huge difficulty handling, setting, parameters is the hopelessly bad logic in the DJI way to spread the functions "all over the place". DJI stores functions as the squirrel store his nuts, every ware...

Not to be a killjoy, but most relatively experienced drone pilots realize the obstacle avoidance sensors are unable to pick up things like electric wires and small tree branches. This really has little or nothing to do with braking sensitivity.

I think you have missed the point. Settings the sensitivity to low means if you let go of the sticks in that scenario the drone is going to continue flying and potentially crash. Hope that makes sense 👍

I believe most obstacle avoidance systems on drones won't detect wires or thin branches but I understand what you mean, if you notice them in the FPV at the last moment, you won't be able to stop if brake sensitivity is set to low⚠️😲 I guess the only use of lowering brake sensitivity is to smooth out any abrupt stops you make to keep movements deliberately cinematic rather than jerky.👍 As long as the pilot understands the limitations, it is something that could be useful as long as it is used with caution.

I think the issue is the obstacle avoidance not picking up power lines (which we've always worried about) and not necessarily so much to do with the brake sensitivity, as it would hit the power lines irrespective of the brake sensitivity setting if you didn't see them. That said, you're braver than me flying so close to them :) but as I think we both agree, if you knock that brake sensitivity down, then you better not be relying on letting go of the sticks to stop fast as it will just go sailing on.... Pause Button is your friend

  • @nobby-green

Hi Ian, yes indeed totally agree, but as we all know those power lines can creep up on you, and if its set to low and you spot them at the last minute and release the sticks it wouldn't stop abruptly as it would set to high. A vastly simpler demonstration of brake action is to fly the drone laterally across the field of view of your stationary camera and simply let go the throttle stick. The drone will lean backward about 30 degree angle, that's the brake action. Reduce brake sensitivity, repeat the procedure, and notice the greatly reduced backward angle of the drone, maybe only 10 degrees. Why it matters: Movie making in particular ought not to be abrupt. Sudden start and stop is conspicuous and not particularly attractive. In older drones (Phantom 3) abrupt braking could actually unscrew the propellers in mid-flight. Adjusting the "expo" on pitch and yaw allows for gradually increasing effect on the pitch and yaw controls. This is great if sometimes you want very nuanced rotation or movement but you also want full speed at maximum command. It has little effect on flyers that simply slam the controls to maximum all the time anyway. *The Reason* that most drones cannot detect an obstacle such as a horizontal wire is the stereoscopic vision system looks for parallax. A horizontal line does not have parallax for horizontally displaced sensors. This is true of your own human eyes; with no other clue, you cannot visually determine distance to a horizontal line.

I'm sorry, i think I may be missing your point about brake sensitivity. You demonstrated that when the m3p sensors detect an object ahead the drone will full stop regardless of how low the brake sensitivity is set. When you tried the same with the power lines, the obstacle avoidance didn't detect them, so does it matter what the brake sensitivity is set at? It seems your issue is more the sensitivity or accuracy of the obstacle avoidance senosrs than the brake sensitivity? Am I just misunderstanding?

@nobby-green ok, that I agree with completely. The M3p and obstacle avoidance is new to me, I've been flying a Mini 2 for about 18months. I think I was just confused by the demonstration, if the drones obstacle avoidance fails to sense something in the way it will hit it regardless of where the brake sensitivity is set, but yes, I agree if you are relying on pilot skill to avoid an obstacle and you have your brake sensitivity set too low, releasing the sticks may still result in your drone possibly "drifting" into whatever is in the way but only if the obstacle avoidance doesn't sense that object as well, yeah?

If you have difficulty seeing powerlines you are using the drone in the wrong place. Always scout the area and know the hazards. Damn good tip. Thanks for sharing. I used fly around mode in a very thick wooded area across from my house. Mini 3 pro actually saw the tiny branches. It would stop calculate and fly around them. Or in between them. While giving off the warning the entire time. It made me nervous. But it did well. I was really surprised! Here is a link. It’s at the very end of the video kzread.info/dash/bejne/jJaIzLVriambp9I.html

Sorry but did I miss something? All you proved was that the obstacle avoidance can't see power lines etc full stop, you proved it doesn't matter what level of sensitivity its set to but you suggested that it did.

The purpose of the video was to show if you set it to low and you see power lines at the last minute it will carry on. Not if it was set to high. 👍

I agree. I want the brake to activate asap. If I want to do a slow stop ill do it by skillful flying.

I'm not sure what your concern is - the manual specifically warns against power lines and small branches...

  • @nobby-green

Yes it does however the concern is if the sensitive is set to low the drone will keep flying for quite some distance. It needs to be used in the places if you are going to use it 👍

what is this nonsense? Seriously. Almost no current drone can adequately detect power lines and it has zero to do with brake sensitivity. Obviously if you turn the braking sensitivity down to 10% then it doesn't stop as fast as it does at 150%. What on earth did you expect to happen? Ian from London has the worst Mini 3 Pro videos on youtube. He makes all sorts of claims that are completely false.
