This OEM+ Mod Made My Old BMW Twice as Fun to Drive - E39 530i Touring - Project Rottweil PT9

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Say goodbye to the automatic transmission, and say Hallo to the 6-speed manual! In this episode, we are making a car that BMW never did, an E39 powered by the M54 engine that has a 6-speed manual transmission. Using the E46 M3 transmission, flywheel, clutch kit, and E39 M5 LSD, driveshaft, cross-member... This swap is plug-and-play and factory-like!

Seriously who would want any of the modern crap when you could have that... a timeless BMW masterpiece, fully refurbished and given modern performance. An E39 (and a touring at that) is the perfect car for just about every scenario... so this is utter perfection in my eyes.

Ones again a phenomenal project and something many have dreamed of. I remember the E38 750IL manual transmission from the movie transporter and always thought, that's the way to go. See you in the next video. ~M.

  • @Melvivio

@@M539Restorations You might be right it is mostly the condensers. With the vehicles I've worked on (also other brands) this ionized / painted black was a tell tale if a vehicle had been worked on / had been in a frontal impact and has been repaired. It has nothing to do with this video, but I just wanted to trigger you and I'm glad that I have. Especially older vehicles (like the 850) seem to have black cooling components. Don't discard the old R12 condenser too quickly as they might have greater cooling capacity than the new units and can be made to work with the r134a. Thank you ones again. Because of you I might finally buy a siebener v12. ~M.

Good to see project Rottweil again! I myself have an E39 touring with the M54B30 paired to a 5MT. Unfortunately, I found out that one of the previous owners had overheated the engine and the head gasket blew on me big time. I fixed it and resurfaced the head, but made a STUPID mistake installing an aftermarket fan shroud and coolant reservoir. The new shroud, new reservoir and stock coolant pipes wouldn't really fit into each other. I couldn't get the C clip seated on both sides on one of the coolant pipes. Not my brightest moment to call that fine. 800km after the fix, I hit a big bump on the road, which had disconnected that hose. I didn't get a low coolant level light as I have quite the electrical problems, but I managed to shutoff the engine within 10 seconds of the temp needle starting to rise. After that the head gasket blew on me again. Due to an upcoming Dutch "TUV" inspection, I have to temporarily write the car off the road. But I do believe that M54 engines are solid engines. My cylinder bores looked really good for 350k on the odo and she still had good torque (for the 800km in between disasters). It is such a shame that KNOWN cooling problems can end an M54. I am going rebuild the engine and resurface the block as well this time (as you should with aluminium blocks).

I advise you to buy an original part, which is like 40€ more compared to the Mahle and Wahler units. The difference between the original one and aftermarket one is clearly visible. You can find quite alot of info online about Mahle thermostats being absolute junk and alot of people experienced them stuck open from the box.

One conversion that a lot of people want to do to their cars but are unable to due to different circumstances (lack of a manual that can fit easily, lack of skill, lack of money, etc). Your videos get better with each episode. Excellent work on the car and on the content. Respect :)

Loved this video, and you so perfectly put into words the connection to a car a manual transmission gives you as a driver. I continue to be impressed with the jobs you will tackle. Can't wait for the next video, Sreten.

Great video! Remember PTFE seals go in dry and you have to wait 3-6 hours for it to shrink, but you can use e36 m3 3.2 rear main seal on m54 it's normal with the spring inside and no waiting time. Keep up the perfection!

Having done a manual swap on my E39 525i around 10 years ago I watched your steps very closely. The way you did it is just perfect and there is nothing more to say.
