you should make a mussel loaded version of this, using brass tubing as a barrel then using a similar setup to shoot but use a nylon cap behind the dart so it wont explode, and use more flash cotton to give it more power, maybe even use a revolving capacsiter holder that not only holds multiple shots but also recharges them

You need to stuff a slightly slower burning charge into the nose. It will ignite after the nitrocellulose and act as base bleed or like a sustainer motor, and significantly increase the range. You could also fashion some sort of converging/diverging nozzle to tuck into the end to optimize specific impulse, that should increase the range too.

this was my first thought as well. it would also have the added benefit of increased accuracy since the flash cotton would be mostly expended before the dart left the tube, so it would work less as a rocket with no fins and more as a launched projectile that uses the body of the dart for stability.

Or you can cut down darts or even buy short darts off the shelf these days, they're the same weight but more aerodynamic because they've got less foam - though you're also cutting down on the size of propellant you can fit inside.

This actually has a pretty interesting practical use. With something like this you could design an airsoft gun with no charging mechanism. All airsoft guns need to pull a spring back, electronically spin a wheel launcher, or use some other manual mechanism because the darts aren't self propelling. With this you could make practical airsoft guns that have basically as many limits as a conventional one. We could finally see a true lever action airsoft, a break action airsoft, or a full auto without whirring noises. Has great commercial potential (as well as great video topic potential)

For the flash cotton version you're almost immediately letting all the energy back out once it slides off the capacitor's edge, a guidance tube would help couple that energy better and across a longer distance into the dart and also help with the slightly wild directions it was firing off at, will likely need less cotton for more energy output also.

Also, flash cotton is good and all for initial acceleration, but it wont serve well if the darts low inertia cannot combat air friction. In other words, we need the dart to continue accelerating while its in the air. Just section off the flash cotton using paper, so that it would set off in stages rather than all at once. Something like: ###| ###|### |### ############## ###| ###|### |### Where the # is cotton, and | is paper. If cut correctly, the paper can serve as a temporary nozzle as well. Not only that, but this could also be contained in a tube of paper/plastic, and be ready to fire immediately. Besides that, the dart will need to be slightly modified so that it won't spin out from the awkward forces. Something simple, like fins, could be used to ensure a straight trajectory (and angling said fins to cause the dart to rotate while airborne will help) Damn, I'm sad I'm not gonna be able to test it out.

You could use the capacitors themselves as a propellant. Just apply a voltage higher than the limit and they pop. ElectroBoom already taught us

So, at 12, I opened it up and wired in a AC/DC convertor so I could just plug it in to an extension cord near where I was playing, and NEVER worry about dead batteries mid-game

Whats missing with the match powder is a nozzle and a container to build up gasses inside. Also you can try mixing match powder with the powder from the igniter strip itself. But I tell you, it explodes very violently. I had my ear ringing for a day just from a few grams of it.

  • @XenXenOfficial

You could probably 3D print some sorta inner housing with tubing that could divert the gasses in a more optimized way to increase thrust 🤔

a small cup shape on the end of the capacitor launcher will give both an area to put the cotton, and a little more gasses will be caught in it instead of ejecting around the edges of the capacitor potentially. Tiny change, might have a decent effect.

To fill them, you should put them in a pipe and pressurise the pipe so the pressure opens and closes the valve. This should allow them to stay pressurised.

If you made a small tube with one end capped off into the dart and using the capacitor, you can really load up on fuel and reduce the risk of popping the dart foam.

I would think that you could add a small barrel to the end of the capacitor to contain the cotton, direct the force better, and allow the dart to accelerate more.

add some kind kind of mechanism that will hit the button when you pull the trigger on the gun so you don't need springs or electric motors to fire it. Find a way to make the blowback from the nerf bullet reset the trigger, consider a more explosive combustion material and maybe reinforce the bullet with metal instead of tape. This has potential to change the way we fight wars.

Bore out the dart a little bit more so you have more internal volume maybe you can launch it further or even put a Teflon tube on the inside so it has less friction with the capacitor launch mechanism. You only needed to look like foam on the outside.

It's actaully really hard to make small vapor-fuel combustion work. Typically, it just displaces all of the air or can't mix well with all of the fluid dynamics of putting a drop of something in a tiny tube.

The problem you were having with the bulk of the combustible methods was a lack of oxidizer. "A syringe full of gasoline" isn't going to do a whole lot without being well mixed with air. A gas engine has to essentially mist gasoline into a volume of air, that is then compressed and ignited. The guncotton chemically "has it's own air" and doesn't require a whole lot else to go bang.
